Japan 'crossed red line' with Taiwan military intervention remarks: China

Japan "crossed a red line" with comments by its new leader suggesting a potential military intervention over Taiwan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Sunday. Remarks earlier this month by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that a Chinese naval blockade or other action against Taiwan could be grounds for a Japanese military response were "shocking," Wang said in a statement posted on the Chinese Foreign Ministry's website. "It is shocking that Japan's current leaders have publicly sent the wrong signal of attempting military intervention in the Taiwan issue, said things they shouldn't have said, and crossed a red line that should not have been touched," Wang said. The most senior Chinese official to address the tensions so far, Wang added that China must "resolutely respond" to Japan's actions and that all countries have the responsibility to "prevent the resurgence of Japanese militarism." Takaichi's remarks have led to rising tensions between the two countries over the pa

Japan's exports rise 3.7% in Oct but US-bound shipments fall due to tariffs

Japan's global exports gained 3.7 per cent in October from a year ago, while imports from the world edged up 0.6 per cent, according to government data released Friday. Exports to the US dipped 3.1 per cent, marking the seventh straight month of on-year declines, Finance Ministry data showed. Worries remain about the possible negative impact from US tariffs. President Donald Trump announced a trade framework with Japan in July, placing a 15 per cent tax on goods imported from that nation. That's lower than the 25 per cent rate Trump initially said would kick in starting in August. Previously, tariffs on most goods stood at 2.5 per cent. Soybean imports from around the world surged 37.3 per cent from a year ago, while those in iron and steel products dipped 17.1 per cent. Imports from the US jumped 20.9 per cent in October from the previous year, especially food imports, such as cereal, as well as petroleum. Exports to the US dropped in computer parts and other machinery, as well

GST 2.0, customs reforms to boost Indo-Japan auto ties and EV push: Report

Significant regulatory transformations such as GST 2.0 and progressive customs reforms are likely to accelerate investment flows, promote EV adoption, and drive the next wave of Indo-Japan collaboration in clean mobility and advanced manufacturing, according to a report. With USD 43.3 billion in cumulative investments, Japan is India's fifth-largest foreign investor. A deeper utilisation of the Indo-Japan FTA will be key to driving competitiveness, enabling technology transfer, and advancing India's journey toward a sustainable, innovation-led automotive future, Grant Thornton Bharat and the Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IJCCI) said in a joint whitepaper. "The convergence of GST 2.0 and targeted customs incentives marks a defining moment for India's automotive sector. Reduced tax rates, simplified compliance, and supply-chain-focused exemptions will not only elevate India's cost competitiveness but also strengthen its positioning as a manufacturing and export hub for .

Japan's economy contracts for first time in six quarters as exports fall

Japan's economy sank at an annualised rate of 1.8 per cent in the July-September period, government data showed on Monday, as President Donald Trump's tariffs sent the nation's exports spiralling. On a quarter-by-quarter basis, Japan's gross domestic product, or GDP, or the sum value of a nation's goods and services, slipped 0.4 per cent, in the first contraction in six quarters, the Cabinet Office said. The annualised rate shows what the economy would have done if the same rate were to continue for a year. The fall was still smaller than the 0.6 per cent drop the market had expected. A big decline during the quarter came in exports, which were 1.2 per cent down from the previous quarter. Some businesses had sped up exports, when they could, to beat the tariffs kicking in, inflating some of the earlier data for exports. On an annualised basis, exports dropped 4.5 per cent in the three months through September. Imports for the third quarter slipped 0.1 per cent. Private consumptio
