Japan's Daiwa Securities set to pick up a minority stake in Ambit

Japan's Daiwa Securities is set to acquire a minority stake in Ambit for an undisclosed sum, the domestic investment bank said on Monday. Both parties signed an agreement for the stake sale on April 26, as per an official statement. The Japanese financial services firm has previously worked with Ambit, which led to the deal, the statement said. Ambit will gain access to Daiwa's network to boost global clients' interest in India's public equities, it said. "Daiwa's enhanced presence in India with Ambit as its local partner, will allow for clients to access deep domain knowledge, showcase focused India equity research, and therefore build a strong India franchise through the Ambit network," it said. In the future, both firms will collaborate to service global clients for institutional equities, as also for the equity capital markets, including IPO, public fund-raising, and other related business, leveraging the Indo-Japan corridor. "Having built a strong and mutually beneficial ...

Yoon Suk Yeol, Fumio Kishida vow better Seoul-Tokyo ties following summit

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Monday called for officials to map out specific steps to hasten security and economic cooperation with Japan following his weekend summit in Seoul with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Kishida during Sunday's meeting expressed sympathy toward Koreans forced into industrial slavery during Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula as the leaders vowed to overcome historical grievances and strengthen cooperation in the face of the North Korean nuclear threat and other challenges. The summit, which was the second meeting between the leaders in less than two months, drew a mixed reaction in South Korea. Critics, including Yoon's liberal opponents who control majority in the National Assembly, said Kishida's comments fell short of a meaningful apology and accused Yoon of letting Japan off the hook over its past aggressions while pushing to repair bilateral ties. Others saw the summit as a sign that the two key U.S. allies are final

In a bid to improve ties, S. Korean, Japanese leaders meet again for summit

The leaders of South Korea and Japan met on Sunday for their second summit in less than two months, as they push to mend long-running historical grievances and boost ties in the face of North Korea's nuclear programme and other regional challenges. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida arrived in South Korea earlier on Sunday for a two-day visit, which reciprocates a mid-March trip to Tokyo by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. It was the first exchange of visits between the leaders of the Asian neighbours in 12 years. South Korean media attention on the summit is focused on whether Kishida will make a more direct apology over Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula. Such comments by Kishida would likely help Yoon win greater support for his push to build stronger ties with Japan and ease domestic criticism that he's preemptively made concessions to Tokyo without receiving corresponding steps in return. It took 12 years to restore the shuttle diplomacy' but our ...

South Korean, Japanese leaders to meet again in a bid to improve ties

The leaders of South Korea and Japan are to meet Sunday for their second summit in less than two months, as they push to bolster cooperation following years of fraught ties over historical issues. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is to arrive in South Korea on Sunday for a two-day visit, which reciprocates a mid-March trip to Tokyo by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. The exchange of visits between the leaders of the Asian neighbours, the first of its kind in 12 years, signals that both nations are serious about strengthening ties in the face of shared regional challenges such as North Korea's growing nuclear arsenal and China's increasing assertiveness. "I hope to have an open-hearted exchange of views with President Yoon based on our relationship of trust," Kishida told reporters before his departure at his official residence. "Since March, there have been various levels of communication in areas including finance and defense, and I plan to further develop this ongoing ..

Strong, shallow earthquake jolts central Japan: 1 killed, 13 injured

A strong, shallow earthquake hit central Japan on Friday afternoon, killing at least one person and injuring 13 others, but no tsunami warning was issued. The magnitude 6.2 quake struck Ishikawa prefecture on the west coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, the US Geological Survey said. The Japan Meteorological Agency measured the quake at 6.5 and said it was centred at a depth of about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles). One person was reported dead and at least 13 were injured in Suzu city at the northern tip of Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture, a city official said. He said six homes were damaged and rain could trigger mudslides, causing further damage. He did not say how the person died, but the Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that a person was found without vital signs after falling from a ladder. It said another person was injured when a cabinet fell on them, and two people were rescued from damaged buildings in the city. A video broadcast by NHK public televisio

Japan to lift Covid-19 border controls before holiday season begins

Japan will lift most of its coronavirus border controls, including a requirement that entrants show proof of three vaccinations or a pre-departure negative test, beginning on Saturday as the country's Golden Week holiday season begins and a large influx of foreign tourists is expected. All entrants with symptoms will still be required to take COVID-19 tests after arriving until May 8, and those who test positive will be placed in designated quarantine facilities, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters. After May 9, testing of those with symptoms will be voluntary. Japan will also drop a special measure subjecting visitors from mainland China to random testing upon arrival that was implemented in late December when infections surged there, he said. The government had originally planned to implement the changes on May 8, when it will downgrade the official status of the coronavirus to a common infectious disease like seasonal influenza, but decided to speed them up f

Japan to restore preferential trade status for South Korea: Official

Japan's trade ministry on Friday said it has begun procedures to restore preferential trade status for South Korea, days after Seoul took a similar step for Tokyo and requested reciprocity, and more than three years after the countries downgraded each other during a bitter historical dispute. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said talks with South Korea this month showed that its controls over trade in sensitive materials with both civilian and military uses are now as effective as those used by Japan. It said it has proposed as a result that South Korea be restored to the list of countries which receive preferential Japanese trading status, subject to a month-long public comment period ending May 31. The list currently contains 26 nations including the United States, Britain, Canada, France and Germany. The step would end a trade dispute that began in July 2019 when Japan removed South Korea from its white list of countries given fast-track approvals in trade, in ...

PM Modi to join US Prez Biden, attend G7, Quad summits in Japan, Australia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to join US President Joe Biden and his counterparts from Australia and Japan at a summit of the Quad leaders in Sydney on May 24 that is expected to focus on implications of the Ukraine conflict and the overall situation in the Indo-Pacific. Before travelling to Australia, Modi is likely to visit the Japanese city of Hiroshima to attend the annual summit of the Group of Seven (G7) advanced economies that is scheduled to take place from May 19 to 21, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. During his visit to India last month, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida invited Modi for the G7 summit. In their summit, the Quad leaders are also expected to bolster overall cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, a region that has been witnessing growing Chinese military assertiveness. The White House on Wednesday said President Biden will attend the G7 leaders' summit in Hiroshima as well as the Quad summit in Sydney. From Japan, Modi may travel to a

Japanese company's 'high probability' spacecraft crashes on moon

A Japanese company lost contact with its spacecraft moments before touchdown on the moon Wednesday, saying the mission had apparently failed. Communications ceased as the lander descended the final 33 feet (10 meters), traveling around 16 mph (25 kph). Flight controllers peered at their screens in Tokyo, expressionless, as minutes went by with no word from the lander, which is presumed to have crashed. We have to assume that we could not complete the landing on the lunar surface, said Takeshi Hakamada, founder and CEO of the company, ispace. If it had landed, the company would have been the first private business to pull off a lunar landing. Only three governments have successfully touched down on the moon: Russia, the United States and China. An Israeli nonprofit tried to land on the moon in 2019, but its spacecraft was destroyed on impact. The 7-foot lander (2.3-meter) Japanese lander carried a mini lunar rover for the United Arab Emirates and a toylike robot from Japan designed

Australia to ramp up diplomatic ties with India, Japan in Indo-Pacific

Australia on Monday said it will deepen its diplomatic and defence partnerships with key allies in the strategic Indo-Pacific, including India and Japan, in response to China's growing assertion of sovereignty over the South China Sea and its threat to the global rules-based order. Unveiling the Defense Strategic Review in Canberra, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's government set out a blueprint for Australia's strategic policy, defence planning and resources over the coming decades. The public version of the final report did not label China a direct military threat to Australia, but said Beijing's assertion of sovereignty over the disputed South China Sea threatens the global rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific in a way that adversely impacts Australia's national interests. It labelled the competition between China and the United States the defining feature of our region and our time and noted that America is no longer the unipolar leader of the Indo-Pacific. South Korea formally restores Japan on trade 'white list' after 3 years

South Korea formally restored Japan to its list of countries it gives preferential treatment in trade on Monday, three years after the neighbours downgraded each other's trade status amid a diplomatic row fuelled by historical grievances. In announcing the move through a government gazette, South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy also said Seoul will further restrict technology and industrial exports to Russia and its ally Belarus to support the U.S.-led pressure campaign against Moscow over the war in Ukraine. After years of friction, Seoul and Tokyo are working to repair relations as they tighten their three-way security cooperation with Washington to counter the threat posed by North Korea. Pyongyang has used the distractions caused by the war to accelerate testing of nuclear-capable missiles. South Korean officials expect Tokyo to restore Seoul as a favoured trade partner too, but expect that step to take more time based on the procedures to revise Japan's export ..

Japan gets ready to shoot down North Korea spy satellite debris

Japan's defense chief on Saturday ordered troops to activate missile interceptors and get ready to shoot down fragments from a North Korean satellite that may fall on the Japanese territory. North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un said earlier this week that its first military spy satellite that will be launched at an unspecified date. North Korea has test-fired about 100 missiles since early last year, saying it was responding to joint U.S.-South Korean military drills that it calls an invasion rehearsal. Several of the missiles flew over Japan or landed off the northern Japanese coast. Last week, North Korea test-launched a solid-fuelled intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time. Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada on Saturday instructed troops to ready PAC-3 surface-to-air missiles in southwestern Japan, including Okinawa and nearby islands, in an area believed to be under a flight path of a North Korean rocket that will carry the satellite. He also ordered the deployment of
