The BJP on Saturday alleged that "historical blunders" like "allowing" Pakistan and China to occupy Indian territory and giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir are Jawaharlal Nehru's legacy, as it hit out at Congress leader Sonia Gandhi over her accusation that the ruling dispensation's main objective is to vilify him. Hitting back at the Congress parliamentary party chairperson over her allegations that the ruling BJP's goal is not just to erase the legacy of the country's first prime minister but to "destroy" his social and political foundations, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said the word destruction that Sonia Gandhi used in her accusation is synonymous with her son Rahul Gandhi. If there is any Bhasmasur' in Indian politics today, he is Rahul Gandhi. He destroyed the parties of Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray in Maharashtra, then Arvind Kejriwal by forging an alliance with his party during the Lok Sabha polls in Delhi, Bhatia charged. After destroying Tejashwi .
India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru's writings are not just history, they are a record of India's evolving conscience, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Friday, asserting that for anyone seeking to understand the nation's democratic journey, his words remain a powerful compass. Gandhi's remarks came over the completion of the digitisation of 'Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru'. The 'Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru' is now online with an entire set of 100 volumes, containing some 35,000 documents and about 3,000 illustrations related to the country's first prime minister, digitised and available free of cost for downloading. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also hailed the development. "Facts are facts and will not disappear on account of your likes' Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In an era of deliberate distortion, disinformation and misinformation regarding Pandit Nehru and his colossal achievements for India, it is worthwhile to digitise his writings for truth an

The Congress on Tuesday paid rich tributes to India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary and said he simply refuses to go away in spite of a systematic "6D effort" being made since 2014 to defame, distort, deny, denigrate, diminish, and demolish him and his legacy. Paying tributes to Nehru, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi asserted that Nehru laid a strong foundation of independent India with his visionary leadership. Alleging that the signing of the Indus Waters Treaty by former PM Jawaharlal Nehru was "one of the greatest strategic blunders", Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the suspension of the pact sends a clear message that India will "no longer reward terror and hostility with appeasement". Sarma also alleged that the country's first prime minister's "misplaced obsession with international approval came at the cost of India's long-term national interest". He praised the Narendra Modi government's decision to keep the treaty in abeyance. India's decision to suspend the decades-old treaty follows the killing of 26 people, mostly tourists, in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on Tuesday. "Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's signing of the Indus Waters Treaty in 1960 stands as one of the greatest strategic blunders in India's history," Sarma said in a post on X. "Despite India's natural upper riparian advantage, Nehru, under immense pressure from the then American administra
Union minister Ramdas Athawale on Saturday asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will "break the record of Jawahar Lal Nehru" and retain power for the fourth consecutive term. The Republican Party of India (Athawale) chief, who is on a three-day tour of Bihar, addressed a press conference after meeting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and asserted that the JD(U) president was in "robust" health and would "stay around for at least five to ten years". Known for speaking his mind, Athawale blamed the recent communal tension in his home state of Maharashtra on the blockbuster 'Chhava' and called for "an end to demands for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb, situated at Aurangabad". "I am proud to be a part of the team led by Narendra Modi who has run a corruption-free government and during whose tenure we are on our way to becoming the third-largest economy in the world. "Modi has already equalled Nehru's record by returning to power for a third consecutive term. I am confident he will br
A member of the Prime Ministers' Museum and Library Society Monday said he has asked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to make widely accessible a collection of private papers belonging to former PM Jawaharlal Nehru which were withdrawn from the erstwhile NMML on the request by the then UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in 2008. Rizwan Kadri, who teaches history at a local college in Ahmedabad, in September had also written to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to allow physical or digital access to private papers related to Nehru that are in her possession. These papers contain records related to exchanges between Nehru and Jayaprakash Narayan, Edwina Mountbatten and Albert Einstein, among other personalities, he said. Nehru lived at Teen Murti Bhawan in central Delhi, which after his death became the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), housing a rich collection of books and rare records. The NMML Society, in its special meeting in June 2023, had resolved to change its name to Prime Ministers'

Rizwan Kadri, a member of the Prime Ministers' Museum and Library (PMML) Society, on Sunday said he has written to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to allow physical or digit access to private papers related to former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru that are in her possession. Kadri, 56, who teaches history at a local college in Ahmedabad, said, he has been vocal in the AGM meetings of the PMML Society -- formerly Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) -- for "reclaiming" the papers that were taken back by Gandhi several years ago. Nehru, India's first prime minister, lived at Teen Murti Bhawan in central Delhi, which after his death became the NMML, housing a rich collection of books and rare records. Kadri said that "51 boxes" carrying records related to Nehru's private papers were taken back by Gandhi. In his letter, dated September 9, to the senior Congress leader, he has said," Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji and his father, Pandit Motilal Nehru ji, have left behind significant recor

The Congress Thursday took a strong objection to Jawaharlal Nehru's name not finding mention among iconic personalities of the independence movement in President Droupadi Murmu's address, alleging it is part of the continuing campaign to erase India's first prime minister from history. Congress General Secretary (In-charge, Communications) Jairam Ramesh recalled that around midnight on August 14, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his immortal 'tryst with destiny' speech in the Central Hall. "Less known but equally important and illuminating were -- His address to the nation over All India Radio on August 15, 1947, which he began by describing himself as the 'first servant of the Indian people'. His message to the nation, printed in the newspapers on the morning of August 15 1947," Ramesh said. This was also the day on which 14 ministers were sworn in, he further recalled. "Apart from Nehru and Sardar Patel, they were Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Azad, Dr. Ambedkar, Syama Prasad Mookerje
The Congress on Tuesday recalled the key role India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru played in the early fifties in the emergence of a sovereign and neutral Austria, and said those "suffering from Nehruphobia" like Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also do well to recall it. Ahead of Modi's Austria visit, Congress general secretary, in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh said the Republic of Austria was established fully only on October 26, 1955, which is celebrated as its National Day and one person who was critical to this becoming a reality was none other than the man "Mr. Modi loves to hate and defame". "Dr. Hans Kochler, a noted Austrian academic, has written about the key role Jawaharlal Nehru played in the early fifties in the emergence of a sovereign and neutral Austria after a decade of occupation by the victorious World War II powers," Ramesh said. One of Nehru's most ardent global admirers was the legendary Bruno Kreisky, who was Chancellor of Austria during ..
Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay Sunday said Narendra Modi might be taking oath as prime minister for a third term, but he does not have a mandate like Jawaharlal Nehru, the only other PM to have three consecutive terms, had. Bandyopadhyay, who was on Saturday re-elected as the leader of the TMC in Lok Sabha, also said the opposition will play a positive role in the functioning of parliament. "People have given some opinion in his (PM Modi) favour... But it is not like Nehru ji (who) had the verdict behind him," he said. Bandyopadhyay said the government is going to take an oath on Sunday "which is okay" according to democratic process but "our leader Mamata Banerjee has declared yesterday this government cannot last long". Nehru was sworn in as the prime minister for the third time in 1962, when the Congress had won 361 seats, 10 down from the Lok Sabha polls of 1957. Asked about the role the Opposition, rejuvenated by its gains in this election, would play in the ..
