'Real' face of the legal fraternity

The assault on journalists and students by some lawyers at the Patiala House Courts complex in the wake of the protests at the Jawaharlal Nehru University cast its shadow on a conference in New Delhi. The conference was attended by representatives of leading law firms from India and the United States. "What you read in the newspapers, or see on television, is not the real face of the legal community in India," said Lalit Bhasin, president of Society of Indian Law Firms, in an oblique reference to the incident on the court premises a few days ago. He said the "real" face of the Indian legal fraternity could be seen in that room, referring to the legal luminaries present at the event.

Farm politics

As protests by students at Jawaharlal Nehru University and the subsequent police crackdown on them grabbed headlines, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Gopal Shetty decided it was time to turn the focus back on the issue of farmer suicides. On the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Wednesday, he said not all farmer suicides were caused by unemployment and starvation. At a time when Maharashtra is experiencing a grave agrarian crisis, Shetty's comment was bound to draw criticism - and it did. Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam was quick to point out that Shetty's remarks reflected the BJP's "insensitivity" towards farmers' plight.
