Harris gets personal in media blitz, resists breaking with Biden's policy

Kamala Harris wanted to help voters get to know her better with a cascade of media appearances on Tuesday, but the most lasting impression might have been her unwillingness to break with Joe Biden. Asked on ABC's The View how she would be different from the president she's served under for four years, Harris said we're obviously two different people and I will bring those sensibilities to how I lead. However, she was not able to identify a decision where she would have gone another way. There is not a thing that comes to mind, Harris said. The exchange encapsulated Harris' struggle to portray herself as a candidate who can deliver the change voters crave while also remaining loyal to the current administration. Some Harris aides privately winced as gleeful Republicans swiftly circulated clips of her response and Donald Trump swiped at her in a social media post, calling it her dumbest answer so far. It wasn't until later in the show that Harris named something that she would do ...

Harris still introducing herself as she sets out on media tour amid voting

When Vice President Kamala Harris sat down for an interview with podcaster Alex Cooper, the conversation didn't start by parsing policy positions. The goal, Cooper told the Democratic nominee, was to get to know you as a person. And that was just fine with Harris, who said she was on the popular Call Her Daddy podcast because one of the best ways to communicate with people is to be real. Long past the midway point of her unexpected presidential campaign and with voting already underway, Harris is still introducing herself to Americans who will determine her fate in this year's presidential election. On Tuesday, her media blitz will take her to studios across Manhattan as the Democratic nominee tries to reach as many people as possible in the shortest period of time. It's a sharp shift after largely avoiding interviews since replacing President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket, and it's an implicit acknowledgment that she needs to do more to edge out Republican candidate Donald ...

Harris calls Trump irresponsibe for spreading falsehoods on Helene response

Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday called former President Donald Trump incredibly irresponsible for spreading falsehoods about the federal response to Hurricane Helene 's destruction, offering especially sharp words as a new storm bears down on Florida with just weeks until Election Day. "There's a lot of mis-and disinformation being pushed out there by the former president about what is available, particularly to the survivors of Helene, Harris told reporters before boarding Air Force Two to fly to New York. It's extraordinarily irresponsible. It's about him. It's not about you. Helene has killed more than 220 people in six states, and Category 5 Hurricane Milton is on a path toward Florida's Gulf Coast. Trump has made a series of false claims in the wake of Helene, including saying incorrectly that the federal government is intentionally withholding aid to Republican disaster victims. He also falsely claimed the Federal Emergency Management Agency had run out of money becaus

New analysis suggests debt could increase under Harris-Trump economic plans

No one is likely to be happy with the projected higher deficits laid out in a new analysis of Kamala Harris' and Donald Trump's economic plans. The analysis released Monday by the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget suggests a Harris presidency could increase the national debt over 10 years by $3.5 trillion. That's even though the vice president's campaign insists her proposed investments in the middle class and housing would be fully offset by higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy. Her campaign policy guide states that Harris is committed to fiscal responsibility - making investments that will support our economy, while paying for them and reducing the deficit at the same time. The same analysis says former President Trump's ideas could heap another $7.5 trillion onto the debt and possibly as much as $15.2 trillion. That's even though he suggests growth would be so strong under his watch that no one would need to worry about deficits. The 34-page report ..

Hindu group in US questions Pakistani-American's ties with VP Kamala Harris

A Hindu political group in the US has raised questions about Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris's ties with a Pakistani-American member of the US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), expressing concerns about the direction her administration might take on sensitive issues like Kashmir. The remarks by Utsav Sanduja, founder and chairman of Hindus for America First, came after the USCIRF last week released an India Country Update which alleged that religious freedom conditions in India have continued to worsen throughout 2024, particularly in the months before and immediately following the country's general elections. India described the report as malicious which only serves to discredit USCIRF further. Sanduja, a supporter of former president Donald Trump, posted a video on X in which Vice President Harris was seen praising Asif Mahmood, a Pakistani-American and now a Commissioner of the USCIRF, for supporting her campaign. He has been supporting me

Kamala Harris heading to North Carolina to survey Helene's aftermath

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is heading to North Carolina on Saturday as the state recovers from Hurricane Helene, arriving there one day after a visit by Republican Donald Trump, who is spreading false claims about the federal response to the disaster. Earlier in the week, Harris was in Georgia, where she helped distribute meals, toured the damage and consoled families hard-hit by the storm. President Joe Biden, too, visited the disaster zone. During stops over two days in the Carolinas, Florida and Georgia, Biden surveyed the damage and met with farmers whose crops have been destroyed. The two have been vocal and visible about the government's willingness to help, and the administration's efforts so far include covering costs for all of the rescue and recovery efforts across the Southeast for several months as states struggle under the weight of the mass damage. In a letter late Friday to congressional leaders, Biden wrote that while the Federal Emergency Managem

Hurricane Helene brings climate change to forefront of US election campaign

A trio of new trials -- a devastating hurricane, expanding conflict in the Mideast and a dockworkers strike that threatens the US economy -- are looming over the final weeks of the presidential campaign and could help shape the public mood as voters decide between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. How events shake out -- and how the candidates respond -- could be decisive as they claw for votes in battleground states. The president, Joe Biden, is still the steward of the US economy and foreign policy at this tumultuous moment and may well bear ultimate responsibility for how they play out. But how Harris and Trump approach the three disparate issues could have a rippling impact on how Americans perceive their two choices this November. "Unfortunately, there are going to be events like this, and this is where you see the leadership of a president show up," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Tuesday. "I think this should send a message t

Harris surveys Hurricane havoc; gives meals, consoles families in Georgia

Vice-President Kamala Harris handed out meals, embraced a shaken family and surveyed Hurricane Helene's "extraordinary" path of destruction through Georgia on Wednesday as she left the campaign trail to pledge federal help and personally take in scenes of toppled trees, damaged homes and lives upended. She visited Augusta, where power lines stretched along the sidewalk and utility poles lay cracked and broken. The vice-president spoke from a lectern erected in front of a house with a fallen tree teetering on its roof, acknowledging those who had died in the disaster while also trying to project a tone of unity and hope for communities now facing long and expensive rebuilds. Harris and President Joe Biden, who visited the Carolinas on Wednesday, were seeking to demonstrate commitment and competence in helping devastated communities after Republican former president Donald Trump's false claims about their administration's response. Harris said she wanted to "personally take a look at

US VP debate: Vance refuses to say Trump lost 2020 presidential election

Republican vice presidential candidate J D Vance has refused to acknowledge that Donald Trump lost the 2020 elections, as he evaded a direct reply on whether the former president would seek to challenge this year's election results even if these were certified in every state. Senator Vance of Ohio came face to face with his Democratic rival Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Tuesday in the only vice presidential debate of this election cycle. The debate comes just over a month before the crucial US presidential elections when the country will choose between Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Trump as the next leader. In reference to the January 6, 2021 insurrection, Vance did not give a clear answer when asked if Trump would again challenge election results this year even if every governor certifies the results. "Look, what President Trump has said is that there were problems in 2020, and my own belief is that we should fight about those issues, deba

Trumps assassination attempt ahead of his returns grapples Pennsylvania

Donald Trump is going back to Butler, where the world last saw him pump his fist and beseech followers to fight, even as blood streaked his face from a would-be assassin's bullet. In announcing his return, the former president and current Republican nominee said he planned to celebrate a unifying vision for America's future in an event like the world has never seen before. The question is: Is Butler ready? While many are predicting a large crowd to hear Trump speak back at the very Farm Show property where a bullet grazed his right ear on July 13, there is also apprehension in town, along with a sense that Butler is still healing. I've consulted with, at least, like 500 people since this has happened, said registered nurse Shanea Clancy, who runs a mental health consulting service in Butler County and has seen people more anxious since the shooting. Some show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. The big theme, if you will, is just, How did something like that happen in our ...

Walz, Vance argue their running mates would reduce Mideast instability

Tim Walz and JD Vance on Tuesday each pointed to the crises of the day as reasons for voters to choose their respective running mates for president, opening their vice-presidential debate by addressing the growing fears of a regional war in the Middle East and a natural disaster that has ravaged the southeastern US. Walz, answering a question on whether he would support a preemptive strike on Iran as it launched missiles into Israel, quickly pivoted to painting Donald Trump as too dangerous for the country and the world in an unstable moment. "What's fundamental here is that steady leadership is going to matter," said Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota. "And the world saw it on that debate stage a few weeks ago, a nearly 80-year-old Donald Trump talking about crowd sizes is not what we need in this moment." Vance, in his reply, argued that Trump is an intimidating figure whose presence on the international stage is its own deterrent. "Donald Trump actually delivered ...

Trump, Harris campaigns claim victories after fierce arguments in VP debate

The Trump and Harris campaigns have claimed victories in the vice-presidential debate as their running mates, Senator J D Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, battled fiercely in a live televised debate wherein they tried to convince their fellow Americans to support, vote and elect them. But unlike the presidential debate, this one lacked high-clash moments. The only vice-presidential debate was hosted by CBS News in New York. As the two vice presidential candidates concluded the 90-minute debate, Walz patted Vance on the side of his arm, and Vance gave Walz a pat on the back. Usha, wife of the US Senator from Ohio gave Vance a warm hug. Vance then introduced Usha to the moderators. Thank you guys for hosting, he said. The Walzes also chatted with the moderators. I think it was a good debate. The public got to see a contrast, and I think the ending sums it up. The democracy issue is important, Walz told reporters after the couple picked pepperoni pizza from Justino's pizza in t

US elections: Trump won't participate in interview for '60 Minutes' special

CBS News said on Tuesday that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has declined to participate in an interview with "60 Minutes" for its election special, which will go forward next Monday with Democratic opponent Kamala Harris alone. Television's top-rated news programme regularly invites the two presidential contenders for separate interviews that air back-to-back on a show near the election. This year, it is scheduled for Monday instead of its usual Sunday time slot. Asked for comment, the former president's campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said, "Fake news," adding that there were discussions but nothing was ever locked in. "60 Minutes" said Trump's campaign had initially agreed to an interview before telling CBS that the former president would not appear. The network said its invitation to sit for an interview still stands, and correspondent Scott Pelley will explain Trump's absence to viewers. Vice-President Harris will appear in a pretaped interview with Bill ...

Navigating US presidential politics, Zelenskyy met Trump and Harris

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is back home leading Ukraine's fight against Russia after a U.S. trip that brought him face to face with the American leaders who will help decide his country's future. The Biden administration pledged more than $8 billion in continued support to Ukraine, guaranteeing military aid until a new U.S. administration takes power. But Zelenskyy found himself briefly mired in domestic politics before meeting with Trump in New York. And the Ukrainian's leader's longer-term strategic aim convincing his allies to adopt a victory plan that he is promoting remains elusive and out of his control, analysts and officials said. So does the aim of using far-reaching Western weapons against Russia, the most immediate element of Zelenskyy's plan. Zelenskyy navigated partisan politics Zelenskyy's visit to an ammunition plant in the swing state of Pennsylvania upset Republicans and House Speaker Mike Johnson fired off an open letter saying the visit was part of a partisa
