Jet employees present 'value' hiring proposition for airlines but may get lower pay offers: Experts

Thousands of employees at now-shuttered Jet Airways might be staring at an uncertain future but other airlines will see "value" in hiring such experienced people even though they might end up getting relatively lower pay packets, according to HR experts. Demand continues to outstrip talent supply in the Indian aviation sector, which is one of the fastest growing in the world. Cash-starved Jet Airways, which has been flying for nearly 26 years, has around 23,000 employees, including contractual staff. It announced a temporary suspension of operations on April 17. Experts observed that employees would have been under stress at the airline for a while, though quite a few would have been hopeful of a turnaround of the carrier. Under the current circumstances, they might have to either shift base to Tier-II or Tier-III cities or accept job offers having lower compensation, they opined. Staffing firm TeamLease Services Co-Founder and Executive Vice President Rituparna Chakraborty said that .

Alibaba head's remarks spark debate over China working hours

Chinese e-commerce tycoon Jack Ma has long been an example of how the power of big dreams, strong leadership and sheer elbow grease can create massive fortunes in China's go-go economy. Yet, recent remarks by the head of Chinese online business giant Alibaba that young people should be prepared to work 12-hour days, six days a week have prompted a public debate over work-life balance in the country. Ma is one of China's richest men and his comments brought both condemnation and support as China's more mature economy enters a period of slower growth and young people look to escape the drudgery their parents often had to endure. Even the newspaper People's Daily, the ruling Communist Party's mouthpiece, issued an editorial this week, saying mandatory overtime reflects managerial arrogance and was also "impractical and unfair" to workers. Online complaints included blaming long work hours for a lower birth rate. "Companies' anxiety is understandable, but the way to alleviate anxiety is .

Pregnant women feel pushed out of their jobs: Study

Working women feel like they are pushed out of their jobs after they get pregnant while on the other hand new fathers often get a boost in their careers, recent findings suggest. As part of the project, the researchers studied two long-standing theories on why mothers are more likely to leave the workforce than fathers. One suggests pregnant women feel "pushed out" of the workplace. The second indicates moms decide for themselves during pregnancy to "opt out" because of changing personal and career values. The findings, published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, confirmed inherent biases against expectant mothers that make them feel unwelcome in the workplace. This is the first study to show that women who feel pushed out of the workplace choose to opt out."We found that pregnant women experienced decreased career encouragement in the workplace only after they disclosed they were pregnant. Once they told managers and co-workers, we saw a decline in career encouragement for women but

Jet union seeks govt intervention to avoid KFA-like collapse

The officers and employees union of the grounded Jet Airways Thursday sought government intervention to avert a Kingfisher-like collapse of the carrier, which could not take off after halting operations temporarily in October 2012. Alleging some "motives" behind the series of developments at the carrier, which eventually forced it to shutter services temporarily from Wednesday night, Jet Airways Officers & Staff Association president Kiran Pawaskar also demanded a probe, preferably by the national investigation agency CBI. After flying for over 25 years, Jet Airways was grounded last night when its final flight, a Boeing 737, touched down at the Mumbai airport early Thursday after departing from Amritsar. The country's oldest private airline flew its maiden flight nearly 26 years ago from the city airport to Ahmedabad as an air taxi operator. "The situation is very bad for employees. Amid woes, revival hopes flutter for Jet Airways employees

Some loaders have pledged ornaments of their wives, some engineers have sold vehicles and many have defaulted on their monthly payments. They are among the 22,000-odd employees of the now wingless Jet Airways. As hundreds of employees, highly-skilled as well as semi-skilled, assembled for a "silent appeal" in the national capital on Thursday afternoon, hope was in the air despite an uncertain tomorrow. From being clueless on how to find money for their children's school and college fees, to paying rent for their accommodations, staff are looking for answers and for most, the answers lie in immediate funding from lenders. "I can't believe that I don't have work today... Hope the airline flies again," Chandrasekar Mandal, who has served the airline for 24 years, told PTI. Mandal, who is a supervisor of loaders at the airport here, has stories of many of his colleagues struggling to cough up money to meet their expenses, including for college admission of their wards. Sunil Kumar, a ...
