Jet CEO says all jobs can't be secured during sale process

Hinting at job losses going forward, grounded carrier Jet Airways chief executive Vinay Dube Wednesday said the airline does not have an "answer" at present on the fate of its 20,000-odd employees during the stake sale process. The SBI-led consortium of lenders has offered prospective bidders ownership of the airline anywhere between 31.2 percent and 75 for which it had run an online bidding process between April 8 and 12 and had shortlisted four - Etihad Airways, NIIF, private equity funds TPG Capital and Indigo Partners-who can submit the final bids by May 10. "However, we must also be realistic that the sale process will take some time and will throw up several more challenges for us, many of which we don't have the answer today," Dube said in a communication to the harried employees who have not been paid since March. 5 million jobs lost between 2016-18, says report

Employment opportunities declined and five million men lost their jobs between 2016 and 2018, according to a report released by the city-based Azim Premji University. The decline in job opportunities coincided with demonetisation in November 2016, although no direct causal relationship can be established based only on these trends, the State of Working India-2019 (SWI) report said. "Accounting for the increase in working-age population, the decline in the workforce participation rate (WPR) amounts to a net loss of 5 million jobs during this period (2016-2018). "Recall that this analysis applies to men only. When we take women into account, the number of jobs lost will be higher," the report released on Tuesday read. Underlining that the last three years were "one of great turmoils" in the Indian labour market as well as in the system of labour statistics, the report pointed out that unemployment rose steadily post 2011. It found that the higher educated and the young were vastly over .

Hong Kong domestic worker fired for cancer awarded damages

A domestic worker sacked after a cancer diagnosis was awarded damages by a Hong Kong court Monday, in a case that highlighted exploitation of foreign women toiling as maids in the wealthy financial hub. Baby Jane Allas of the Philippines was diagnosed with stage three cervical cancer in January and fired the following month by her employer, who cited the illness as the reason for termination. The 38-year-old single mother of five instantly lost the right to healthcare and has had to regularly apply for visa extensions as she navigated Hong Kong's legal and immigration systems while battling cancer. She has been undergoing radiation therapy five days a week, along with chemotherapy one day a week. Allas and her former employer -- who was absent from Monday's proceedings -- reached a settlement of HK30,000 ($3,800) at Hong Kong's labour tribunal for sickness allowance, medical fees and wages in lieu of notice. Goyal says Congress 'Nyay' scheme recipe for scam, may burst like balloon

Union Minister and senior BJP leader Piyush Goyal Sunday said the Congress party's promise of a minimum income scheme for poor is a "disaster" in its design itself and could lead to another "scam" as selection of beneficiaries would be full of corruption. Goyal said he feels it will not be possible to implement this scheme as there is no data for income and salary levels and the Congress promise will "burst like a balloon". The Congress has promised to deposit Rs 72,000 annually into the bank accounts of 20 per cent of the poorest people across the country if it comes to power. While the Congress leaders and its president Rahul Gandhi have been saying the proposed scheme, which the party has named 'Nyay', has got a huge traction among the voters, the BJP has termed it totally impractical and against economic prudence. In an interview to PTI, Goyal said, "From the perspective of economic and financial prudence, obviously it is a disaster. I believe that it is near impossible because ...
