Twenty children, including six girls, from Odisha forced into child labour at brick kilns near here have been rescued and cases registered against two people, police said Saturday. A joint team of officials, including police and district child protection unit, rescued the children, four of whom were aged under six, from brick kilns located at Kacharam in Shamshabad mandal Friday. A case under different provisions of the acts related to child labour and the Indian Penal Code had been registered against two owners of the brick kilns and efforts were on to nab them, police said. The children -- 14 boys and six girls -- hail from Odisha. The children aged below six had been admitted to "Sishu Vihar" while others sent to government-run rehabilitation centres, police said.

"As per a Supreme Court order, EPS pensioners should be given a higher pension. At present they are getting the pension in range of Rs 200 to Rs 2500 per month, which is meagre in view of rising inflation," the Sangharsh Samiti's Bhopal coordinator R A Dharkar stated. He said the pension amount should be raised to minimum Rs 7500 per month apart from the DA (Dearness Allowance). The Gujarat Assembly Friday cleared a Bill that allows shops and food joints in urban areas to operate 24 hours and also those situated on national highways, inside bus stations and hospital premises. : As many as six bonded labourers have been rescued from two sericulture units in Chikkaballapur, officials said Friday. The case came to light when two labourers escaped from one of the units and managed to get in touch with a non-governmental organisation Janapriya, according to the International Justice Mission (IJM). Janapriya claimed that the bonded labourers belonged to Bengaluru urban, Bengaluru rural and Ramanagara district, and some had spent five years to 10 years in confinement. The NGO put the number of the labourers in the two units at 12. However, the deputy commissioner of Chikkaballapur district P Anirudh Sravan told PTI that he has received a release order from the assistant commissioner for six people. He added that the number may go up if the inquiry confirms that others, if any, were also bonded labourers. Six employees of a fireworks factory were charred to death and over 10 others got injured after a fire broke out at its unit in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district Friday, police said. Eight sheds in the factory unit at Varaganur were destroyed when the bundles of firecrackers kept for drying exploded, they said. Three fire tenders were engaged to douse the flames which spread from the sheds to the area, where the employees were working, police said. The injured people were rushed to a government hospital in Kovilpatti, they said. A case was registered against the factory owner, who was at large, police said.

An industrial court in the city has indicted the workers' union of automobile major Mahindra and Mahindra for various financial transactions between 2010 and 2012 in violation of labour laws, including payment of money to a trust founded by NCP leader Sachin Ahir. In an order passed on February 1, tribunal member J L Gandhi held that the union had made several financial transactions in violation of the trade union laws and directed it to recover the money paid to certain private bodies "without any justification". The tribunal directed the union to recover over Rs 50 lakh from various organisations, including Sankalp Pratishthan, founded by Mumbai Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ahir. The tribunal was hearing a petition filed by an expelled union member, Ravindra Hatim. Thousands of employees of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) Thursday proceeded on mass casual leave for a day to press their demands including a wage hike as per the 7th Pay Commission. It left commuters across the state stranded as GSRTC buses stopped plying. Over 7,000 GSRTC buses are off the roads since midnight, parked in various depots of the corporation across the state.
