Rejecting allegations of rising unemployment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said crores of new jobs have been created in formal and unorganised sectors including transport, hotels and infrastructure. Jobs have been created both in informal and formal sectors, he said in Lok Sabha, citing data from provident fund and National Pension System (NPS), Income Tax filings and sale of vehicles among others. The strong rebuttal came amid allegations of jobless growth under the Modi government. Replying to the debate on Motion of Thanks to the President's address to Parliament, Modi said informal sector accounts for 85-90 per cent while the formal sector provides only 10-15 per cent employment in the country. The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel Wednesday after a cabinet meeting. The cabinet, led by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, approved changes to the Gujarat Shops and Establishments Act of 1948, which bars shops, restaurants and other such business entities from doing business between 12am to 6am. A bill to amend the Act will be tabled during the upcoming Assembly session, starting February 18. "As a step towards promoting ease of doing business in the state, we have decided to amend this Act so that these units can remain open 24 hours," said Patel. The decision would generate more jobs as additional people will be hired for night shifts, he said. NMDC Wednesday said it has reached an agreement with worker unions over wage revision and other benefits for the next five years. "Today (Wednesday), the tripartite agreement for revision of pay scales and other benefits was arrived in a meeting in New Delhi. The 10th pay revision of NMDC unionised category workmen wage agreement signed today," NMDC said in a statement. However, the company did not provide the details of wage revision. In NMDC, pay scales and other benefits of workmen are revised every five years. Last time, the pay revision was effective from January 1 2012. Therefore, the pay revision was due with effect from January 1, 2017. The agreement was signed in the presence of leaders of the All India NMDC Workers Federation led by Vice-President R D Tripathi. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday wrote to Union Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha about the plight of contractual workers of BSNL and urged him to take steps to stop job loss and regularise payment of wages. In her letter, Banerjee said, "Thousands of contractual workers associated with different establishments of BSNL under Calcutta Telephones and West Bengal Telecom Circle are facing acute hardship due to non-payment/irregular payment of wages as well as faced with loss of jobs." She requested Sinha to look into the matter urgently. Banerjee also enclosed a letter from the INTTUC-affiliated BSNL-Nationalist Thika Workers' Congress Union on the same issue. The union's letter, which was sent to the chief minister earlier in the day, said BSNL contract workers in the state were not getting their monthly wages on time since 2017 and requested her to take up the issue with the Centre.
The Uttarakhand government on Wednesday approved 10% reservation in education and employment opportunities for economically weaker sections in the general category. As many as 708 government employees in Jaipur district were found absent from their duties during a surprise inspection by district administration officials on Monday. The Central Government on Monday decided to allow women to work in underground coal mines and also do night shifts in open cast or over ground mines, in a bid to bring about greater gender equality and generate more employment opportunities for women.The government in a notification said it had decided to exempt the women employed in any mine above and mine below ground from the provisions of section 46 of the Mines Act, 1952, which restricts the women from working in mines.Following the request from women employees and mining companies, the ministry has also decided to extend the timing of women workers in coal mines initially and it would be extended in other such mining sectors on the basis of the initiative.
