NCDRC asks SBI to allow widow access to monthly pension

The apex consumer forum has directed the State Bank of India (SBI) to allow the widow of a defence personnel access to her monthly family pension which was withheld. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) bench said freezing the woman's bank account and denying her access to pension amounted to deficiency in service. A bench of presiding member Anup K Thakur and member C Vishwanath directed SBI's branch in West Bengal's Nadia to release the withheld pension to the woman, Manika Sarkar. "The respondent (Sarkar) was a customer of the petitioner (SBI) as she was having a joint account in the petitioner's bank, where her pension was regularly deposited. Govt to conduct new survey on employment, says Debroy

The government will conduct a new national sample survey on employment, which will show that there has been "substantial job creation", prime minister's economic advisory council chief Bibek Debroy said Friday. Amid a raging controversy over employment data, Debroy also said states are largely responsible for creating "business environment" and jobs. On Thursday, a media report based on the National Sample Survey Office's (NSSO) periodic labour force survey, said unemployment rate had hit a 45-year high of 6.1 per cent in 2017-18. However, the same day, the government said it had not finalised the survey on labour force. US adds 304,000 jobs in January, shutdown helped nudge unemployment to 4 pc

US job creation saw another blockbuster month in January, blowing past the government shutdown, but that disruption helped to push the unemployment rate higher, the Labor Department reported Friday. The construction, health care, hospitality and retail sectors added tens of thousands workers, another sign the robust labor market remain a fundamental source of strength even though the US economy is expected to slow in 2019. The new numbers were also fresh welcome news for President Donald Trump, whose already-low public approval rating suffered in the wake of the longest government shutdown in US history. Employers added 304,000 net new positions last month -- the highest in nearly a year and almost double what economists had predicted -- while growth in worker pay held steady just above inflation, according to the report. However, the five-week government shutdown was at least partly responsible for an uptick in the jobless rate to 4.0 per cent, the highest in seven months. And hiring

Let's have another round of demonetisation: Chidambaram

Taking a swipe at the government, Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday alleged the NDA government while "revising upwards" the GDP growth rates had inadvertently also upped the unemployment figures. In another jibe, he said that the demonetisation year (2016) was the "best year" of growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and, in sarcasm, called for "another round of demonetisation" -- this time of Rs 100 notes."Modi Government revises GDP growth figures upward. What government did not realise was that unemployment figure was also revised upwards," Chidambaram tweeted."NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman asked, 'How can a country grow at an average of 7% without employment?' That is exactly our question. With unemployment at a 45-year high, how can we believe that the economy is growing at 7 per cent? The demonetisation year was the best year of growth (8.2%) under Mr Modi. So, let's have another round of demonetisation. This time let's demonetise 100 rupee ...

CM's nephew Harish Rao resigns as trade union chief in RTC

TRS MLA and former minister T Harish Rao Thursday resigned from the post of honorary president of Telangana Mazdoor Union in the state-run Road Transport Corporation (RTC) citing paucity of time to focus on the union activities, party sources said. Rao, a nephew of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, became honorary president of TMU with a view to promoting workers' participation during the separate Telangana agitation. However, it has become difficult for him to participate in the union's activities as he had to give more time to official programmes since the formation of Telangana, the sources said. He chose to step aside from the responsibilities of TMU against this backdrop, they said. Rao would, however, continue his cooperation for the welfare of workers, they added. Harish Rao had held the crucial irrigation portfolio in the previous TRS government.
