Rajasthan roadways buses stay off road

The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation buses stayed off road today as the roadways employees went on a two-day strike from today to press for the implementation of the seventh pay commission and other demands. Most of 4,780 buses from the 52 depots in the state remained off road on the first day of the strike today, an RSRTC official said. We are demanding implementation of seventh pay commission and release of three pending DAs, among others. It is a two-day strike which will incur a loss of revenue of nearly ten crores in the two days, he said. Transport Minister Yoonus Khan requested the employees to call off the strike, saying the government is considering their demands positively. The government is positive on their demands and we have requested the striking employees to return to work, Khan told reporters in Jhalawar.

Over 44L new jobs generated between September-May

The fourth report in the series of employment statistics by Central Statistics Office (CSO), citing Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) data, suggests that more than 44 lakh new jobs were added between September 2017 and May 2018.As many as 7.43 lakh new payrolls were generated in the month of May itself, with the biggest contributor to the figure being the age bracket of 18-21 (more than 2.5 lakh new payrolls), followed by the age bracket of 22-25 (more than 1.9 lakh payrolls).Earlier, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation in April released the first-ever employment related statistics in the formal sector, covering a period between September 2017 and February 2018. The figures are attained using information on the number of subscribers who have availed benefits under three major schemes -- Employees' Provident Fund (EPFO), Employees' State Insurance Scheme (ESIC) and the National Pension Scheme (NPS).This was the first time India introduced monthly ...

Over 2.4 lakh job seekers registered on NCS in Apr-Jun

More than 2.4 lakh job seekers registered themselves on the career portal run by the labour and employment ministry in the first three months of the current fiscal, the government said today. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said the number of job seekers registered on National Career Service Portal in 2018-19 (till June 30) was 2.42 lakh. In 2017-18, a total of 38.90 lakh job seekers registered themselves on the NCS, up from 22.66 lakh in the previous year. Responding to a query asked by MP Shamsher Singh Dullo, the minister said that through the NCS (National Career Service) portal, 10.69 lakh vacancies have been mobilised. The portal also facilitates organisation of job fairs, where both employers and job seekers can interact. Gangwar further said that the ministry has engaged with several institutions and organisations to bring more job opportunities.

Labour force survey likely to release by November

A clear picture about the labour market will emerge from the National Sample Survey Office's (NSSO) periodic labour force survey which is likely to be released in October-November, the government today said. The Labour Bureau will now on take employment data from the Ministry of Statistics and not conduct the survey of the labour market on its own, Labour and Employment Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha. "The Labour Bureau used to conduct the survey. There were certain shortcomings as we could not get an accurate data. So, we have changed and we have decided to take data from the NSSO's periodic labour force survey (PLFS)," he said. "Already work has started. The survey, mostly likely to be released in October-November, will give a clear picture about the labour market," he said. Employee posts video of unsanitary restaurant, loses job

A Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen employee in Detroit says she lost her job after posting cellphone video showing unsanitary conditions in the food storage and preparation areas. Shakita Shemere told The Associated Press that a manager told her to leave Monday night as she was livestreaming the video on Facebook. It shows uncovered containers of what appears to be raw chicken in a freezer, dirty containers stacked for reuse and trash across much of the floor. The 20-year-old Shemere says she made the recording after the manager yelled at her for screaming when she saw a cockroach. The AP left a voicemail seeking comment from the restaurant's manager or owner. The restaurant was closed today. Detroit's health department says management was cooperating and following cleaning protocols. Popeyes' corporate office says the franchise owner was working with health officials.

Himachal Pradesh Assembly's Monsoon Session to begin on August 23

The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet today decided that the Monsoon Session of the Assembly will be held between August 23 to August 31 here, according to an official release. The Cabinet meeting, held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur also decided to fill up 218 posts of pharmacists, batch-wise, in health and family welfare department on contract basis, it said. It okayed Mukhya Mantri Awas Yojna for providing assistance of Rs. 1.30 lakh to the houseless families belonging to BPL category for construction of house in rural areas of the state, the release stated. The Cabinet also gave its approval to Mukhya Mantri Yuva Aajeevika Yojana, 2018, to promote self-employment and to provide livelihood to locals in the age group of 18 to 40 years by encouraging entrepreneurship.

Court notice to AAP MLA on plea against his discharge in child-labour rescue case

A Delhi court today issued a notice to AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan seeking his response on a plea challenging his discharge in a 2010 case in which he was accused of threatening and obstructing labour department officers from rescuing child labourers from zari units in south Delhi. Special Judge Arvind Kumar issued notice to the Delhi government, Khan and another accused directing them to file their responses by August 21, the next date of hearing. Senior advocate H S Phoolka, appearing for Rakesh Senger, a former National Secretary of NGO Bachpan Bachao Aandolan, told the court that the magisterial court, while discharging Khan and Saifiullah Siddiqui, "ignored the evidence and material on record which was contrary to the facts and also against the well settled law". Lack of implementation makes laws ineffective: Ex-CJI

There was no dearth of laws on the vital socio-economic issues in the country, but the lack of proper implementation rendered them ineffective, former chief justice of India T S Thakur said here today. Speaking at a seminar on "Right to work and living wage", he said the speed with which the constitutional promises were needed to be honoured was "slow". "There are hundreds of laws. The problem lies in their implementation. Any law on right to work will meet the same fate as has happened to the right to education," Justice Thakur said, pointing to the shortcomings in the implementation of the provisions for universal education. He referred to various constitutional and legal provisions that mentioned "right to work", while also saying they were not binding on the State. I can't force industries to employ Goans: Parrikar

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar today said the state government cannot force industries to employ Goans, but it could provide incentives to companies that recruit locals. He noted that as the financial condition of Goans has changed over years, they are not ready to work in many fields. "I can't force industries to employ Goans because each job warrants a set skill. If that skill is not available locally, then they have to depend on the workforce from outside," Parrikar said in the state Assembly. Sports Ministry sanctions of Rs. five lakh for former archer Ashok Soren

Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore has sanctioned financial assistance of Rs. five lakh to former archer Ashok Soren after it came to light that he had been working as a daily wage labourer to sustain himself. "The financial assistance has been given from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons (PDUNWFS). Shri Soren is currently living in Jamshedpur in indigent conditions," said the Sports Ministry in a release. It was reported that Soren was working as a labourer under the government's rural employment guarantee scheme. The 28-year-old Jamshedpur-based former archer had won two gold medals at the 2008 South Asian Games. The Ministry had earlier approved a similar assistance for Arjuna awardee archer Limba Ram, who is suffering from a neuro generative disease. MSME Min to dispatch teams to 117 districts to spread word on schemes

The MSME Ministry will send teams of officials to 117 most-backward and naxal-affected Aspirational Districts identified by NITI Aayog to spread awareness about its existing schemes and obtain proposals to set up and strengthen micro and small enterprises, Parliament was informed today. Replying to a query in the Lok Sabha, Union Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) minister also informed that MSMEs are significantly present in all states and union territories and are the second largest employer after agriculture in the country. Anganwadi workers, helpers in J-K announce suspension of their 6-month-long stir

Anganwadi workers and helpers in Jammu and Kashmir today announced suspension of their nearly six-month-long agitation for various demands including hike in honorarium, saying they are temporarily resuming work on the assurance of the state administration. Over 28,000 Anganwadi workers and helpers went on an indefinite strike across the state on February 1 to press for their demands, which also included implementation of the pension scheme, release of pending salaries, seniority list and gratuity of Rs two lakh for workers and Rs one lakh for helpers on retirement. Labour Min proposes changes in Trade Unions Act

The labour ministry has proposed changes in Trade Unions Act (1926), with an aim to give them wider recognition at central and state level. It has been alleged that the central and state government do not give due weightage to trade unions or their federation in the absence of any statutory backing, other than by the labour ministry. As per the existing rules, the trade unions are first verified by the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), consequent to which the Ministry of Labour and Employment provides recognition. There are 13 recognised central trade unions/ federations at present in the country. The verification is done on the basis of executive guidelines and a code of discipline for recognition of trade unions operating in a particular establishment or the industry.
