'Supremely optimistic' for 2019, says Hardeep Singh Puri

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri said he is "supremely optimistic" that the BJP will retain power in the 2019 general elections. "On 2019, I am supremely optimistic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is delivering goods and services at a scale which is unprecedented," Puri told PTI in a recent interview here. The minister was in the city last week to attend the UN High-Level Political Forum, which is reviewing progress towards several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). WB orders nullification of unions in state jails

The West Bengal government has nullified union activities by the employees in the state jails to improve prevailing work culture there. The state Cabinet has given its nod to this effect, following which a notification was issued recently to prohibit union activities in any of the correctional homes. "No activities (are going) to be allowed in uniformed services at any correctional home premises," read the notification issued on Thursday last. According to a senior official of the state Prisons department, from now on, "no prison establishment could be used for any sort of union activities", as per the notification. "Unions will not be allowed to put up signboards or any sort of notice inside prison premises," the official said quoting the notification. The government order has also banned all meetings, agitations, demonstrations and deputations by the unions inside the correctional homes in the state. French rail strike cost SNCF nearly 800 million euros: report

An unsuccessful strike by rail workers this year against President Emmanuel Macron's reform plan for the heavily indebted state operator SNCF cost the company 790 million euros ($920 million), according to an internal document seen by AFP. Lawmakers gave final approval to the overhaul plan in June after months of rolling strikes -- every two days out of five -- which began in April. In total drivers and other workers walked off the job on 37 days, the longest SNCF strike in three decades, causing cancellations and delays for the 4.5 million daily passengers on the network. The loss corresponds to roughly 21 million euros per strike day, and more than wipes out the company's net profit of 679 million euros posted for 2017. It takes into account lost ticket sales as well as reimbursements and other expenses. Delhi labour panel recommends direct hiring of contract workers by govt

The contract labour board of Delhi has recommended for direct hiring of contractual workers by various government departments instead of employing outsourcing agencies for the purpose. The recommendation was made yesterday by the board in its meeting chaired by Delhi Labour minister Gopal Rai. " The board has recommended direct contract of workers with various government departments, who are currently hired through outsourcing agencies," a Delhi government statement said. The board also proposed appointment of labour welfare officers by the departments to ensure effective supervision, management and compliances under various labour laws, it said. During discussion in the meeting, it was noted that the present system of outsourcing of personnel leads to non-payment of provident fund and other allowances besides incurring different charges and taxes.

2 lakh posts of Anganwadi staff lying vacant

Over two lakh posts of Anganwadi staff are lying vacant in the country with Bihar alone accounting for 53,000, the government informed the Rajya Sabha today. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for the Women and Child Development Ministry Virender Kumar also said that the monthly honourarium of the Anganwadi Workers is Rs 3,000, Anganwadi Workers of mini-Anganwadis is Rs 2,250 and Anganwadi helpers is Rs 1,500. Anganwadis are government-sponsored mother and child care centres. Asked whether Anganwadi workers were facing increasing responsibilities and work expectation while they are paid mere honoraria, Kumar said in addition to the monthly honourarium of the Anganwadi staff, they are paid extra for additional work assigned to them. He said Anganwadi workers and Anganwadi helpers are selected by district level committee in the states and Union territories from time to time. Govt's PMEGP Generates Over 11 Lakh Jobs in Last Three Years

The Minister further said that in order to revive the sick Khadi Institutions, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) implements 'Strengthening of Infrastructure of Existing Weak Khadi Institutions and assistance for Marketing Infrastructure' scheme. Chhattisgarh: CM Raman Singh launches online pension system

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh on Wednesday launched an online portal and mobile app called 'Aabhaar-Aapki seva ka' by the online pension management system for the pensioners of the state.Addressing the gathering, Dr Raman Singh said, "There has been a big change in the system today. This government is grateful for the services you have given to people over the years."Through this app and the website, 80,000 pensioners of the state will now get all the information related to pension and payment online.The app, which is also available on Android, has been created by the state finance department."The app has been launched to provide transparency in the pension facility," he added.Pensioners will get the benefit of senior pension with the State government's 7th pay scale before January 1, 2016.This will bring an additional burden on the state government, which has also been mentioned during the budget.

Cabinet approves MoUs for advancement of accounting knowledge

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) regarding the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).One agreement will be signed by ICAI and the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance (BIBF) in Bahrain, and the other with the National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA) in Tanzania for the advancement of accounting knowledge.Tanzania will help in indirect employment generation for Indian chartered accountants through recognition and acceptability amongst Tanzania-based employers.The MoU would provide an opportunity to ICAI members to expand their professional horizons and, will foster strong working relations between the ICAI and NBAA, in Tanzania, and establish mutual co-operation framework in the areas of member management, technical research and professional accountancy training.In Bahrain, the government aims to build a positive impact for Indian CAs currently working in Bahraini markets, and also to make it relatively easier for .

Pb govt announces honorarium hike for anganwadi workers, helpers

The Punjab government today announced a hike of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 in the honorarium for anganwadi workers and helpers, respectively. It has also been decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 in lump sum when their tenures end at the age of 70 years, Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Aruna Chaudhary said here after a meeting with the representatives of all three unions of anganwadi workers and helpers. Since the anganwadi workers and helpers work as volunteers, there was no provision for any financial benefit so far, she said. The minister said these measures had been taken in accordance with the directions of the chief minister Amarinder Singh. The monthly honorarium of the anganwadi workers and helpers will now be Rs. 6,600 and Rs. 3,300, respectively, Chaudhary added. Why oppose minimum wage of Rs 20K for nurses: HC to pvt hospitals, nursing homes

The Delhi High Court today asked a group representing over 350 private hospitals and nursing homes in the city as to what they were paying the nurses employed by them and why were they opposed to giving them a minimum wage of Rs 20,000 as recommended by an expert panel. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar also asked the group, DMA Nursing Home and Medical Establishment, to specify what, according to it, should be the minimum wages for such persons and the rationale for the same. "How can you be opposed to a minimum wage of Rs 20,000? What are you paying them (nurses)? What according to you should be the minimum wage and what is the rationale for it," the court asked DMA. Mega infra projects to boost job generation in Vidarbha region

A slew of big infrastructure projects underway in Vidarbha are expected to give an impetus to employment generation in the drought-hit region of Maharashtra, a government official has said. The MIHAN (multi-modal international cargo hub and airport at Nagpur), the Nagpur metro and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation's (MIDC) industrial estate in Butibori are the backbone of the region's economy. These projects have so far generated 13,462 direct jobs and 75,252 indirect employment opportunities, the official told PTI here. Govt to release unemployment data in next 2 months

The government today said in the Rajya Sabha that it will come out with unemployment data from 2016 in the next two months and asserted that various schemes are being implemented with an aim to create more jobs. Job opportunities have not come down in the country and even global data shows that unemployment rate in India is lower, Minister of Labour and Employment Santosh Kumar Gangwar said during the Question Hour. "The data is not available for unemployed persons since November 2016. We are conducting a survey. We will come out with a report in the next two months," the minister said. The Labour Bureau has been conducting quarterly employment surveys in selected labour-intensive and export oriented sectors, he said. Satyendar Jain given additional charge of irrigation and flood control dept

The Irrigation and Flood Control portfolio has been given to PWD Minister Satyendar Jain from senior AAP minister Gopal Rai, sources said today. The change in Rai's portfolio has been made to ensure coordination between the I&FC and the Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation (DSIDC), they said. The two bodies are mandated to carry out development works in unauthorised colonies. Rai has the portfolios of labour, employment, general administration and development departments. Industrialists reluctant to invest in Odisha: Cong

A week after Odisha slipped three notches to the 14th position in Ease of Doing Business rankings, Opposition Congress today said industrialists are reluctant to invest in the state. Although the state government claimed they have "excelled on all fronts", the large corporate houses and the MSME sectors are not satisfied with the business climate provided in the state, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik said. "The BJD government said all facilities have been made available here to set up industries, but only half of the promoters, who have signed MoU with the state, have started work on their projects. Many industries and business houses are now in search of another option," a statement issued by Patnaik claimed.
