Retail inflation for industrial workers eased to 4.59 per cent in January compared to 4.91 per cent in December 2023 mainly due to lower prices of certain food items. Food inflation stood at 7.66 per cent in January 2024 against 8.18 per cent in December 2023. Food inflation was 5.69 per cent in January 2023 a year ago, a labour ministry statement said. Retail inflation based on the consumer price index for industrial workers (CPI-IW) was 6.16 per cent in January 2023. The All-India CPI-IW for January 2024 increased by 0.1 point to 138.9 points from 138.8 points in December 2023. The maximum upward pressure in the current index came from the Housing group contributing 0.48 percentage points to the total change. At the item level, House rent, Ladies Suiting, Casual wear, Saree Cotton, Woolen Sweater/Pull-over, Plastic/PVC Shoes, Tailoring Charges/Embroidery, Chewing Tobacco, Foreign/Refined Liquor, Pan Masala, etc. are responsible for the rise in the index. India needs equivalent of BLS in US for jobs data: Wadhwani Foundation CEO

A comprehensive jobs data is the need of the hour in India to help understand what kind of employment opportunities are getting created and which sectors are hiring, and the government should look at developing an equivalent of the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) in the US, Wadhwani Foundation Global President and CEO Ajay Kela told PTI. "India is a young country and the youth population is massive. Every month we have one million people who turn 18 and they need jobs. We must make sure there are jobs available for all such people who need to support themselves and their families," Kela told PTI in an interview on Tuesday. Centre to launch 2nd version of National Career Service portal in 2024

The government will launch the second version of the National Career Service (NCS) portal as well as persuade states to roll out labour reforms as part of efforts to further improve the ease of doing business and provide social security for the unorganised labour, particularly gig and platform workers, in 2024. Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupender Yadav told PTI that his ministry will soon launch the "advanced version, namely NCS 2.0, to facilitate better job matching and search facility for jobseekers along with a recommendation engine for skilling by the use of latest technologies and leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning". The NCS project was launched in July 2015 to provide various employment-related services, including career counselling, vocational guidance, information on skill development courses, apprenticeship and internships, through a digital platform. As of November 30 this year, the NCS platform had more than 3.64 crore registered jobseekers

Retail inflation for industrial workers up marginally at 4.98% in Nov: Govt

Retail inflation for industrial workers increased marginally to 4.98 per cent in November compared to 4.45 per cent in October this year, mainly due to higher prices of certain food items. Food inflation stood at 7.95 per cent against 6.27 per cent in the previous month (October 2023) and 4.30 per cent during the corresponding month (November 2022) a year ago, a labour ministry statement said. According to the statement, year-on-year inflation for the month stood at 4.98 per cent in November compared to 4.45 per cent for the previous month (October 2023) and 5.41 per cent during the corresponding month (November 2022) a year before. The All-India CPI-IW (Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers) for November 2023 increased by 0.7 points and stood at 139.1 points. The CPI-IW was 138.4 points in October 2023. Job cards of over 54.8 million MGNREGA workers deleted in 2022-23: Govt

Over 5.48 crore job cards under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act were deleted in 2022-23, a 267 per cent jump from the previous fiscal, the Union Rural Development Ministry informed Lok Sabha Tuesday. In reply to a query by JD(U) MP from Bihar Dileshwar Kamait, Minister of State for Rural Development Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said West Bengal saw the highest number of MGNREGA job cards being deleted at 83,43,469, which is 5,203 per cent more than 2021-22 when 1,57,309 job cards were deleted. In Bihar, job cards of 83,30,633 workers were deleted, which is 315.84 per cent more than the previous fiscal. Uttar Pradesh saw the deletion of 78,78,403 job cards, 608 per cent more than the previous fiscal, while Andhra Pradesh saw the deletion of 77,96,889 job cards, the minister said. EPFO invested Rs 27,105 crore in exchange trade funds in Apr-Oct: Govt

Retirement fund body Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO ) has invested Rs 27,105 crore in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) during the current fiscal till October, Parliament was informed on Monday. EPFO had invested Rs 53,081 crore in the ETFs during the fiscal 2022-23, higher than Rs 43,568 crore in 2021-22, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameshwar Teli said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The reply showed that the EPFO has invested Rs 27,105 crore in the ETFs so far in the current fiscal 2023-24 till October 2023. The body had invested Rs 14,983 crore in ETFs in 2016-17, Rs 24,790 crore in 2017-18, Rs 27,974 in 2018-19, Rs 31,501 crore in 2019-20 and Rs 32,071 in 2020-21, according to the reply. Himachal Pradesh has witnessed the highest overall unemployment rate of 33.9 per cent, followed by Rajasthan at 30.2 per cent, among the age group of 15 to 29 years in cities during July-September 2023, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). The PLFS data of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) also revealed that unemployment among the 15-29 age group in urban areas was high among females at 49.2 per cent in the July-September quarter of this fiscal year as compared to 25.3 per cent among males in Himachal Pradesh. in the case of Rajasthan, the joblessness in females in cities was high at 39.4 per cent in the quarter as against 27.2 per cent in males. Jammu & Kashmir also reported a high rate of joblessness at 29.8 per cent in the age group in cities. Union labour ministry issues show cause notice to Air India Express

The Union labour ministry has issued a show cause notice to Tata Group-owned Air India Express for alleged violation of regulations with respect to certain disputes with the airline's management and cabin crew members, according to sources. Many cabin crew members have raised concerns, including about room sharing during layovers. In this regard, a complaint was filed before the labour department and the matter is under conciliation as per the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. A query sent to Air India Express seeking comments regarding the show cause notice remained unanswered. The airline, which was taken over by the Tata Group in January last year, implemented certain policies that were under the conciliation process, as per the sources. Retail inflation for industrial workers eased to 4.45 per cent in October from 4.72 per cent in September mainly due to lower prices of certain food items. Retail inflation based on All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) was 6.08 per cent in October 2022, a labour ministry statement said. Food inflation stood at 6.27 per cent in October 2023 against 6.52 per cent in the previous month and 6.52 per cent during the corresponding month (October 2022) a year ago. The All-India CPI-IW for October 2023 increased by 0.9 points and stood at 138.4 points. The CPI-IW was 137.5 points in September 2023. The maximum upward pressure in the current index came from Food & Beverages group contributing 0.68 percentage points to the total change. ESIC added 2.02 million members, 24,298 new establishments in June

The Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) added 20.27 lakh new members under the Employees State Insurance Scheme in June. Around 24,298 new establishments were registered and brought under the social security umbrella of the ESIC in June. The provisional payroll data from ESIC reveals that 20.27 lakh new employees were added in June 2023, a labour ministry statement said on Thursday. As per the data, more jobs were generated for the youth. Out of the total 20.27 lakh employees added in June, 9.77 lakh employees were up to the age group of 25 years, which translates to 48.22 per cent of the total number. Gender-wise analysis of payroll data showed that net enrolment of female members stood at 3.87 lakh in June. A total 71 transgender employees were registered under the ESI Scheme during the same period.

The process of applying for higher pension on the unified portal of EPFO is "simple and easy to understand" and as per the Supreme Court's order last year, Parliament was informed on Monday amid the criticism of unfeasible requirements on the portal. Following the Supreme Court order in November 2022, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had given option to subscribers and their employers to jointly opt for higher contributions as per the actual basic wages (higher than threshold of Rs 15,000 per month) on the unified portal. "The process in unified portal for submission of joint options for higher pension is simple and easy to understand and contains simple requirements as per provisions of Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) Scheme, 1952, Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), 1995 and the judgment of the Supreme Court on November 4, 2022," said Minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameswar Teli in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The government has taken various steps to eliminate discrimination in labour markets, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav has said. The minister made the remarks in a panel discussion at the World of Work Summit of ILO on 'Promoting Social Justice' in Geneva on Wednesday, the Ministry of Labour & Employment said in a statement. "The Minister highlighted government initiatives to eliminate discrimination in labour markets promoting social justice. He highlighted the steps the government has taken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to eliminate discrimination in labour markets," it said. UIDAI, labour ministry top performers in grievance redressal index

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Ministry of Labour and Employment are the top performers in the grievance redressal index, an official statement issued said on Tuesday. The index is part of the Centralised Public Grievance Redressal and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) monthly report for April 2023 released by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG). The report provides a detailed analysis of the types and categories of public grievances and the nature of disposal. "Disposal of grievances in the central secretariat has been on an upward trend with the pendency on its downward trend," the statement said.
