HC takes cognizance of PIL against alleged constitution of Hindu courts

The Allahabad High Courttoday sought response of the Uttar Pradesh government on a PIL urging the court to intervene in the allegedconstitution of Hindu courts on pattern of Sharia courts by an organisation in several western districts of the state. A bench comprising Chief Justice DB Bhosale and Justice Yashwant Varma asked the petitioner, Ankit Singh, to implead Puja Sakun Pandey, a judge of the purported "Hindu Court". It asked counsel for the state government to apprise it of their stand on September 11, the next date of hearing of the PIL filed against the alleged constitution of Hindu courts. Singh, a resident of Kanpur district, has filed the Public Interest Litigation citing media reports that claimed a decision was taken by a Hindu organisation to constitute Hindu courts in every district on the pattern of Sharia courts of Islam and urged the high court to intervene.

Chargesheet submitted in Patnagarh wedding gift blast

The crime branch of Odisha police has submitted in court the preliminary charge sheet in the sensational Patnagarh wedding gift blast in which two persons, including the groom were killed on February 23. The 300-page charge sheet has been submitted at the sub-divisional judicial magistrate court at Patnagarh in Bolangir district yesterday, ADG, Crime Branch, S K Upadhay told reporters here today. The blast had taken place when the the groom opened a gift pack and he was among the two who were killed in it. Following a request by the new bride Reema Sahu and her family, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had ordered the crime branch to probe into the incident. The charge sheet has accused Punjilal Meher, an English lecturer at Jyoti Vikas College where the victim Soumya Sekhar's mother Sanjukta Sahu is the principal. SC asks Centre to respond on special courts for lawmakers

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, sought an affidavit from the Central government to track down the number of special courts that have been set up to deal with criminal cases that involve the lawmakers.A five-judge constitution bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, noted a batch of petitions seeking a direction to the Central Government.The petitions claimed that the persons and especially the Members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies, charged with cognizable offences, shall be debarred from contesting the elections, at the stage when the charges are framed by the court- provided the offence is punishable by imprisonment of five years or more, and the case is registered six months prior to the election notification.Appearing for the Union of India, Attorney General KK Venugopal, opposed the PILs.He stated that no one can be disqualified before his or her conviction and it is the Parliament that amends or makes any law.The apex court also asked about the ...

JMM leader arrested for derogatory Facebook post against BJP MP

A Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader has been arrested for alleged derogatory social media post against BJP MP and party state unit president Laxman Gilua, police said today. JMM West Singhbhum district secretary Raghunath Tiu allegedly posted the derogatory remarks on his Facebook page three days ago. In his post, Tiu had allegedly accused Gilua, a tribal, of being "anti-Adivasi", officer-in-charge of Chakradharpur police station Gopinath Tiwary said today. BJP councillor Ratan Lal Bodra filed a complaint against the JMM leader for his post, the police said. Following investigation, police arrested Tiu, who was then produced before a court on Monday which remanded him in jail custody, Tiwary said. Jabir Moti asks for media to be banned from hearing, UK judge refuses

Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's key aide, Jabir Moti, appeared in a London court today for his bail hearing on money laundering charges during which the judge turned down his counsel's request to ban the media from the hearing. During today's hearing, Moti's counsel requested the judge to ban the media from the court over safety concerns due to "reports appearing in the Indian media". Judge Coleman, hearing the case at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London, turned down his request. Cal HC transfers probe into death of businessman's wife to CBI

Expressing dissatisfaction with the progress of a probe into the unnatural death of a Raniganj businessman's wife, the Calcutta High Court today transferred the case to the CBI. The woman, Pushpa Bhalotia, died on October 5, 2017. The West Bengal CID was conducting the investigation into the case after taking over it from the local police. Justice Rajasekhar Mantha directed that the case be transferred to the central agency. The 39-year-old woman was found burnt at her residence in Raniganj area of West Burdwan district and was taken to a private hospital in Durgapur, where she succumbed to her injuries. Her husband, Manoj Bhalotia, a well-known businessman, and her in-laws claimed that Pushpa had committed suicide by setting herself on fire. However, the post-mortem report revealed that there was a bullet injury on her forehead which could have been the reason for her death, apart from the burn injuries. Security guard opens fire inside a Delhi bank

A security guard of a nationalised bank in Delhi's Defence Colony area allegedly opened fire inside the premises on Tuesday, injuring a customer.The guard has been apprehended by the police also recovered the weapon used during the attack. BCCI registers new constitution after SC order

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday registered its new constitution with the Tamil Nadu Registrar of Societies at Chennai, as directed by the Supreme Court in its recent verdict on Lodha panel recommendations.Making the announcement, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) Chairman, Vinod Rai and member, Diana Edulji issued a joint statement, saying that they are committed to implement the directions of the apex court."We thank the Honorable Supreme Court for their directions and are pleased to start the process today by the submission of the new constitution of the BCCI with the Tamil Nadu Registrar of Societies at Chennai. 3 arrested for smuggling narcotics, drugs worth Rs 2.5 cr seized

Three persons were arrested today on charges of narcotics smuggling and drugs, worth over Rs 2.5 cr, were seized here, police said. They were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) from the Polytechnic Crossing following a tip-off, they said. The accused were identified as Mohd Salman, Mohd Taufeeq and Santosh Tiwari. The STF seized 2.5 kg of drugs, worth over Rs 2.5 cr in the international market, police said. They were involved in narcotics smuggling in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, they said, adding that the arrests were made at 2 am. Police said a detailed probe is on in the matter.

Two die, two taken ill after eating mango kernel cake

In a case of apparent food poisoning, a woman and a 15-year-old girl died today and two other members of a family fell ill reportedly after having traditional cakes prepared from mango kernel powder in the district, officials said. Family members of one Arjuna Santa in Mainapadar village cooked traditional rice gruel mixing mango kernel powder last week and ate the cake. Though there was no problem at that time, the family members complained of stomach problem after they ate it again later and fell sick, the officials said. Four of the family members - Sudhamani, Prakash, Namita and Pramila - started vomiting followed by acute diarrhoea yesterday night. Namita, sister of Arjuna, died at around 2 am, following which they were taken to the local community health centre and later shifted to the district headquarters hospital. HC seeks reply of UIDAI, Centre on plea raising concern over Aadhaar data security

The Delhi High Court today sought response of the UIDAI and the Centre on a plea raising concerns about Aadhaar data security and privacy of individuals, in the wake of several reported leaks of personal information of people from the Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) database. A bench of justices S Ravindra Bhat and Anu Malhotra issued notice and sought reply of the authorities on the plea which also urged the court to direct the Centre to either allow people to opt out of the system or delete the entire existing UIDAI data in view of the security breaches. The bench listed the matter for further hearing on November 19. The petitioner, Kerala-based lawyer Shamnad Basheer, has alleged in his plea that there were several breaches of the Aadhaar system leading to leakage of personal information of individuals since January this year and contended that UIDAI and the Centre were liable to compensate people whose data was compromised. Knifeman kills six in southern China

Six people were killed after a man went on a killing spree in southern China, stabbing his girlfriend and her relatives, ploughing a car into pedestrians and attacking passersby. The 54-year-old man surnamed Huang had been having relationship problems and decided to take it out on his girlfriend and her family in Monday's attack, Liuzhou police said in a statement. He stabbed the woman and her relatives at their home -- killing all four of them -- and fled in a black SUV. "When driving on the Wenchang Bridge, (Huang) got agitated by the traffic and took it out on passersby, killing two and injuring 12," the Monday statement said. Police said he ploughed the vehicle into several motorists on electric bicycles, then got out of the car and stabbed pedestrians with a knife before he was arrested. Knife attacks are not uncommon in China. In July, a man who stabbed nine children to death and wounded another 11 in northern China was sentenced to death.

Sharif to spend Eid in jail for second time in political career

For the second time in his political career, Pakistan's jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will celebrate Eid in a jail after a top court deferred the decision on a petition seeking his release. The Islamabad High Court's judgement yesterday would mean that Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz and his son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar will also celebrate Eid-ul Azha in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Nawaz Sharif's jailed son-in-law rushed to hospital again

The jailed son-in-law of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar, was today rushed to hospital from the high-security Adiala Jail after he complained of chest pain, his second hospitalisation within this month, media reports said. Safdar, along with Sharif and his daughter Maryam are lodged in the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi after an accountability court sentenced the trio in one of the threee corruption cases against the former prime minister. He was taken to the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology after complaining of chest pain, the Express News reported. Dabholkar killing: CBI recovers country-made pistol

The CBI today recovered a country-made pistol in Aurangabad in Maharashtra, similar to the one used in the killing of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in 2013, officials said today. A khukri, three live rounds and a 7.65-bore pistol were recovered on the basis of leads given by Sachin Prakasrao Andure who was arrested recently by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), they said. The agency will send the pistol for ballistic examination to ascertain whether it was used in the killing of Dabholkar, they said. The recovery was made from a friend of a relative of Andure, they said. Andure, a resident of Aurangabad, was arrested on August 18. He is believed to be one of the shooters who fired upon Dabholkar in Pune on August 20, 2013 in broad daylight, the officials said. Inform us about setting up of spl courts to try cases of politicians: SC to Govt

The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to inform it about how many special courts have been set up to exclusively deal with cases involving politicians after its order last year. The top court had on December 14 last year directed the Centre to set up 12 special courts to exclusively deal with cases involving politicians and said that these should start functioning from March 1 this year. A bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi today asked the Centre to inform the court whether these special courts were courts of sessions or magisterial courts and also provide details of their territorial jurisdiction. The bench asked the government to inform it about the number of cases pending before each of these special courts, along with the break-up of magisterial and sessions triable cases there.
