Man arrested for raping minor girl in Bihar

One person has been arrested on the charge of raping a seven-year-old girl at Jamla village in Bihar's East Champaran district, police said today. The man was held following an FIR lodged by the girl's father yesterday, Mufassil police station SHO Arvind Prasad said. The accused might have lured the minor girl to an isolated place, Prasad said, adding, he abandoned her near a roadside in the village after allegedly committing the crime. A medical examination of the girl has confirmed rape, the SHO said.

Navi Mumbai Shiv Sena corporator booked for molestation

A Shiv Sena corporator from Navi Mumbai has been booked on charges of molesting a 19-year-old college student after promising to help her financially, said police today. Namdeo Bhagat, a Shiv Sena member of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), allegedly molested the woman at his farmhouse in Dighode village near the coastal town of Uran in adjoining Raigad district on Sunday last, a police official said. The 51-year-old corporator, who is also a member of the NMC standing committee, had called the victim to his farmhouse on the pretext of helping her financially, he said. The woman filed a complaint after which an offence under IPC section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) was registered against the corporator yesterday at the Uran police station, the official said. Bhagat is absconding, he said, adding further probe is underway.

Mandsaur rape and murder: Death sentence to convicts

A special court in the Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh awarded death sentence to the two men, convicted of raping and murdering a minor earlier this year.Irfan and Asif abducted a seven-year-old girl from her school in Hafiz colony in Mandsaur in June. The duo then tortured and raped the girl before killing her and throwing her body at a secluded spot in the city. Following the incident, the two men were arrested, while a Special Investigation Team was set up to investigate the matter with utmost priority.Protest burst out in the city following the incident, with the state Opposition party mounting an attack on the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government.Demanding a speedy trial, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister pitched for a death penalty to the culprits. He also wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and sought his intervention for the timely disposal of such cases in the Supreme Court.

Indonesia woman irked by mosque noise convicted of blasphemy

An Indonesian court has sentenced a woman who complained about a noisy mosque to 18 months in prison for blasphemy. The ethnic Chinese woman, Meiliana, burst into tears as a judge announced the sentence Tuesday. She was taken from the court in handcuffs. Prosecutors said the 44-year-old defendant violated Indonesia's criminal code by committing blasphemy against Islam, the dominant faith in Indonesia. Mobs burned and ransacked at least 14 Buddhist temples throughout Tanjung Balai, a port town on Sumatra, in a July 2016 riot following reports of Meiliana's complaint about a mosque's noisy loudspeakers. The woman's lawyer said the sentence would be appealed.

Case of cow vigilantism surfaces in UP's Shamli

In another case of cow vigilantism, two men were beaten up with belts and sticks allegedly by Gau Raksha Seva Dal workers on Tuesday over suspicion of being cow smugglers in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district.According to the police, "the members of the group spotted a vehicle carrying cows in Adarsh Mandi area and stopped it. The duo on board had no proper documentation of the purchase which angered the mob."The police have taken the two men into custody for further interrogation and a case has also been registered in this regard.The rampant incidents of cow vigilantism in several parts of the country have become a matter of concern for the government.On July 3, the Supreme Court strongly condemned these incidents terming them 'unacceptable'.The three-judge Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said, "Nobody can take law into their own hands. NCW asks Bihar DGP to apprise of detailed action in beating, stripping of woman

The National Commission for Women has directed the Bihar DGP to apprise it of the detailed action being taken in a case in which a woman was allegedly beaten and stripped by a mob in Bhojpur district, an official said. The woman was beaten up, stripped and paraded naked yesterday on the streets by an irate mob which suspected her of being involved in the killing of a 19-year-old man. Taking suo motu congnisance in the case, the NCW directed Bihar DGP K S Dwivedi to apprise it of the detailed action being taken in the matter at the earliest, the official said. The commission took cognizance of the incident and serious note of the fact that no arrests were made by the police even after several photos and videos had been circulated on social media, she said. Woman assaulted by mob, paraded naked in Bihar; 16 arrested, 8 cops suspended

Sixteen persons, including a local RJD activist, have been arrested and eight policemen suspended after a women was assaulted and paraded naked in the state's Bhojpur district by a mob on suspicion of her involvement in alleged murder of a man, officials said today. Violence had rocked the main market area of Bihiya block of the district, about 60 km from the state capital, after the body of 19-year-old Vimalesh Sah, who had gone missing on Sunday, was found adjacent to a railway track yesterday morning, Bhojpur Superintendent of Police Avakash Kumar said. Residents of Sah's native village Damodarpur had rushed to the spot upon hearing the news and some of them suspected that those living in a red light area nearby could have strangled the youth to death, police said. The villagers set ablaze a number of shops in the market area and assaulted many local residents, police said. As the mob frenzy continued, one of them dragged the woman out on street, ripped off her clothes and paraded .

Bank customer injured in accidental fire from guard's gun

The gun of a guard employed with a bank in south Delhi accidentally went off, injuring a customer today, police said. The incident took place inside a branch of the Vijaya Bank in the Defence Colony area, they said. The guard, Rudra Pal Singh, is a retired Army man. The injured person was identified as Rajender Singh, who is being treated at the Moolchand Hospital, police said. The Defence Colony police station received a call about the incident at 1:30 pm, they said. The weapon used by the guard has been recovered from the spot along with an empty and five live cartridges, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south), Romil Baaniya, said. The guard has been arrested and case had been registered. The matter is being investigated.

Minor dead, 10 others ill in suspected food poisoning case

A four-year-old girl died and 10 others of her family fell ill today in a suspected food poisoning case in Vikas Nagar village of Rajasthan's Dungarpur district, an official said. After the family members complained of vomiting and loose motion today, they were admitted to a hospital. A team was sent to Vikas Nagar village to take samples of the food and water, Dungarpur CMHO Mahendra Kumar Parmar said. He said the deceased was identified as Maya Varhat.

MP: 14-yr-old boy sentenced after 7-hr trial for rape of minor

In an extra-ordinarily fast-paced trial, a juvenile court here convicted and sentenced within seven hours a 14-year-old boy on charges of raping a minor girl. Juvenile Justice Board Judge Tripti Pande awarded two years' imprisonment to the accused yesterday after wrapping up the trial in seven hours, government advocate Deependra Malu said today. The crime took place on August 15 and the entire process, from registration of the case to pronouncement of judgement, was completed in five days, police said. "The case diary was submitted in the court at 10.45 am yesterday and the judgement, after trial, was pronounced around 6 pm," Malu said. "This is probably for the first time, after the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act came into effect in 2012, that a judgement in a rape case of a minor has been given in such a short duration," he said. HC orders SIT to probe Uttarkashi rape case

The Uttarakhand High Court today asked the state government to form a special investigation team (SIT) within 48 hours to look into the alleged gang rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Uttarkashi district. Taking suo motu cognisance of the recent incident, which has led to a wave of protests in the state, a division bench of Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Manoj Tiwariof the high court passed the order. The court ordered that the minor victim's family be provided adequate security. The bench suggested that lower courts should fast-track such cases and give speedy judgements. Reminding the state government of its promise to bring in a legislation making provision for capital punishment for rapists of minors, the court asked when such provisions would be incorporated. 30-year-old gangraped in Chandauli's Alinagar: police

A 30-year-old woman, on way to the Kashi Vishwanath temple, was allegedly gang-raped in Alinagar area here, police said today. The woman, hailing from Satna in Madhya Pradesh, arrived on Sunday night by train at the Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Railway station and hired a taxi to reach the temple in Varanasi district to offer prayers on the last Monday of the holy month of 'Shravan', SP Santosh Kumar Singh said. The taxi drivers, identified as Sonu and Jitendra,instead of driving her to Varanasi took her to a house in Alinagar area and allegedly raped her during the night hours, he said. The woman somehow informed the police next morning after which both the accused were arrested, the SP said adding that efforts were on to trace the house owner. The woman was sent for medical examination, the SP added.

Excise sleuths foil bid to smuggle 14,000 kg of polythene bags in J-K

The Jammu and Kashmir Excise Department sleuths today foiled an alleged bid to smuggle around 14,000 kg of polythene bags at the Lakhanpur inter-state toll plaza in Kathua district. A truck was intercepted at the toll plaza and checking was conducted by the excise department sleuths which led to the recovery of approximately 14,000 kg of polythene bags, Deputy Excise Commissioner Ashish Kumar Gupta said. Polythene bags are banned in Jammu and Kashmir. The polythene bags had been disguised as flour bags to be smuggled into the state, Gupta said. The truck driver has been arrested and further investigation is underway, he said.

Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar's PA commits suicide

A 31-year-old man, working as a personal assistant (PA) to Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, today allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in south Delhi's Laxmibai Nagar, the police said. Kundan Kumar was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where he was declared 'brought dead', said Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south). Police said they received a call at Sarogini Nagar police station about the incident at 2.25 am. When the crime team reached the spot, they learnt that the door was locked from inside. They inspected the spot and took photographs, he said. No suicide note has been found, said an officer. Kumar is survived by his wife Shivani and a six-month-old son, he said. The body was handed over to his relatives after postmortem. Further investigation is underway, they said.

2 dummy candidates appearing for railway exam held in Indore

In separate cases in the past one week, the city police have arrested two men for allegedly appearing as dummy candidates in the railway recruitment exam, an officer said today. The accused, identified as Dhiraj Kumar (21) and Ranjit Prasad (22), hail from Nalanda district of Bihar, Palasia Police Station in-charge Ajit Singh Bais said. "Both the accused were arrested in connection with ongoing Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exam," he said. Dhiraj Kumar was arrested on August 20 after he was found appearing for the exam in place of Abhimanyu Kumar at RRB examination centre at Islamia Karimiya College in Palasia area, he said. Before that, police had caught Ranjit Prasad from the same centre on August 14 for giving the exam in place of Santosh Kumar, Bais added. "A detailed probe is on to find out if there is any big racket behind this. We have also sent our team to Bihar to arrest the candidates for whom these accused were appearing in the examination," he said.

Chairman among two top leaders of militant outfit held

Chairman and information secretary of Manipur based militant outfit Zeliangrong United Front were arrested from Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district, police said today. Chairman Raitu Chawang and information secretary G P Namthuiyang, both wanted for their crimes in Manipur, were taken into custody yesterday when they were going to Guwahati in a bus. "We have arrested the two militant leaders from a bus. The bus was on its way to Guwahati," district SP Vivek Syiem told PTI. The 66-year-old chairman and the information secretary would be handed over to the Manipur police, he said. The two were wanted by the Manipur police in at least five cases, the SP said. From their possession, four mobile phones were seized and certain documents.

Temple priest accused of molesting two women surrenders in Goa

A former temple priest accused of molesting two women surrendered before a court in Goa today and was arrested by the police, an official said. Dhananjay Bhave, 51, formerly attached to a famous temple in Mangueshi village, around 15 km from here in North Goa district, turned himself in before the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) at Ponda town, he said. The two women, hailing from Mumbai and currently studying in the US, had filed complaints last month with the Ponda police against the priest, accusing him of molesting them in the temple on separate occasions during their visit to the place in the last two months. The priest, who was subsequently dismissed from the temple's services, was missing since then. He had filed an anticipatory bail petition before the district court which rejected the plea.
