NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York state on Tuesday sued Purdue Pharma LP, accusing the OxyContin maker of widespread fraud and deception in the marketing of opioids, and contributing to a nationwide epidemic that has killed thousands.
In his first public appearance after becoming a Supreme Court judge, Justice K M Joseph today said that at the age of 60-plus he felt "like a baby again" on becoming the junior most judge of the top court, and added he knew of his own "limitations". "At the age of 60 plus, I have become a baby again as I am the 25th judge of Supreme Court. I am rather conscious of my own limitations to be elevated to the highest court. It is indeed a big honour," Justice Joseph said in a short speech during a felicitation ceremony organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). Justice Joseph, while making it clear that he won't make any promises, said, "I won't be able to venture to make any promise but all I can do is, I hope and pray that I'll be true to the oath of office, which I have taken and which will go a long way in dispensing justice." A two-year old girl was today seriously injured after a man allegedly poured hot water on her at Ultadanga area here, police said. An officer of Ultadanga police station said two persons were arrested in connection with the incident after the child's family lodged a complaint. According to the complaint, the two persons - both tenants in the girl's house in Daspara locality - hurled hot water on her after a heated argument, the officer said. The child was taken to SSKM Hospital with 50 per cent burn injuries, police said.
The interim resolution professional (IRP) of Bhushan Power and Steel (BPSL), Mahender Kumar Khandelwal, today alleged that the confidentiality of Committee of Creditors meeting was breached as information on deliberations was "leaked". He further alleged that a deliberate attempt was being made to sabotage the resolution process of the debt-laden firm. "Today CoC meeting of Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd (BPSL) was held .... A court in this district of Madhya Pradesh today sentenced a man to death for raping a minor girl. Additional District Judge Sudhanshu Saxena awarded the capital punishment to Naresh Parihar (40), said assistant prosecutor P L Rawat. The prosecution examined 24 witnesses, he said. The judge, while pronouncing the verdict, said the Indian society considers girls as "goddesses", and if they are not provided security and rapists remain at large, their future would be imperilled. A senior government official was today shot dead by unidentified persons inside his official residence here, police said. Fourteen police officials, including the inspector in-charge of the police station concerned, were suspended following the incident that took place barely a few 100 metres from the state Assembly building, even as 12 people were rounded up on the basis of suspicion. The Delhi Police today claimed to have arrested a dreaded criminal wanted in several cases. The Crime Branch, which arrested gangster Sandeep Kana, has recovered an automatic pistol from his possession, police said. Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) A K Singla said that the accused was also wanted in the case of killing an elderly man in Delhi's Ranhola area last year. In a statement, Singla said that a secret information was received that Kana would come near CNG pump in a car to meet his aides on August 11. "The Crime Branch team laid a trap near the expected place of his arrival and the accused was successfully apprehended in his car," they said. "On search, one loaded illegal sophisticated pistol was recovered from his possession. Accordingly, a case under the Arms Act was registered and the accused was arrested in the case," they said.
A teenaged girl was allegedly gangraped in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district, a senior police officer said today. Two sisters along with two friends were walking towards Chaibasa-Hatgamariah main road when four miscreants intercepted them near Talaburu railway crossing yesterday evening, the officer said The miscreants assaulted the two friends of the girls and dragged one of them towards the jungle and allegedly gangraped her. A police team spotted the girl in Talaburu jungle, Superintendent of Police, G Kranthi Kumar said. The police with the help of the Talaburu Munda (village chief) and villagers, arrested all the four accused including a minor last night, SP said. A Medininagar court sentenced a man today to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl in Jharkhand's Palamau district last year. The Palamau District and Sessions Judge, Devendra Kumar Pathak convicted Ramesh Bhuiyan for raping a minor girl at Bakikhurd village in January 2017 and sentenced him to 15 years of imprisonment. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on Bhuiyan. According to an FIR lodged in this regard, Bhuiyan, a neighbour of the girl, had entered into her house and raped her when she was alone. The girl was alone at home as her parents had gone to the market. When her parents returned, the girl narrated her ordeal before them. Following this, they lodged an FIR against Bhuiyan.
The Uttarkhand High Court has issued a slew of directions to the state government for the welfare of cattle, including strict enforcement of the ban on cow slaughter and sale of beef. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Rajeev Sharma and Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari issued the directions invoking the doctrine of 'parens patriae.' The doctrine allows courts to be the legal guardian of cows and other cattle. Issuing 30-odd directions, the court ruled that "no one in Uttarakhand" would "slaughter or cause to be slaughtered or offer or cause to be offered for slaughter, any cow, bull, bullock, heifer or calf forthwith." The court also ordered that "no person shall sell beef or beef products in any form throughout the state". It also ordered prosecution under the Indian Penal Code, the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act, 1960 and the Uttarakhand Protection of Cow Progeny Act, 2007 against the owners of any cattle which are found on the streets and other public places. The Supreme Court today took a giant step towards digitisation of courts across the country by launching three applications to facilitate e-filing of cases, making digital payments and service of judicial notices through smartphones to the litigants. Chief Justice Dipak Misra said the e-committee of the apex court has launched the applications - e-courts services, E-pay and NSTEP (National Service and Tracking of Electronic Processes) - and these would pave the way of quality and speedy justice to litigants. "This introduction of many applications paves the path of quality, quantity, affordability and cost effectiveness. And those qualities of the system matters," the CJI said. Justice M B Lokur, who heads the e-committee, said that by using the e-courts services, the litigants and the lawyers would be able to file petitions in almost 17,000 district and 'taluka' courts in the country by using their computers and mobile phones. A 29-year-old man was arrested for allegedly firing at his wife on suspicion of infidelity, police said today. The accused, identified as Vikram Kumar Jha, is a resident of Vaishnav Kunj in Delhi's Mahavir Enclave, they said. On August 12, the accused fired at his wife when she was at her mother's residence. On the same day, he also fired at his friend after he refused to lend him money, said Devender Arya, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) said. In view of Independence Day, heavy security was deployed in southwest Delhi and necessary arrangements were also made to cordon off the entire area near the crime scene in Nasirpur, the officer said.
