Another deaf-mute tribal woman alleges rape by hostel director in MP

One more hearing-and-speech impaired tribal woman in Madhya Pradesh has lodged a police complaint against the director of a hostel in Bhopal for allegedly raping her after showing pornographic material to her. A case was registered here last night against Ashwini Sharma, the hostel's director, on the basis of the complaint filed by the 23-year-old woman, a native of Dhar district, Indore's Hira Nagar police station in-charge Mahendra Singh Bhadauria said today. The victim, in her complaint, has accused Sharma of raping her after showing pornographic material to her, the official said, but did not divulge any further details. The alleged incident occurred between December 2017 and February 2018, when the woman was staying in Sharma's hostel in Bhopal for her studies, Bhadauria said. Man lynched on suspicion of being thief suffered 11 injuries: Police

A man, who was lynched in Bijopur here by a group villagers on suspicion of being a thief, had 11 injuries on his body, according to the post mortem report. The deceased was identified as Kapil Tyagi. According to the post mortem report, the victim had suffered 11 injuries, Station House Officer (SHO), Chapar, Subhash Rathore, said. The person has no criminal history. The matter in being investigated, he said. The incident took place on Friday evening and a case of murder was registered against several people, of whom two persons were arrested, the SHO had said yesterday. His family claimed that Tyagi was innocent and was beaten to death when he had gone to work at Bijopur, Rathore had said.

UP: Woman beaten to death over dowry

A woman was beaten to death allegedly by her in-laws and husband over dowry at a village in Shamli district, police said today. The incident took place last evening at Abdan Nagar village. Based on a complaint lodged by the woman's father, a case was registered against her father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law and husband at the Jhinjhana police station, Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari said. The woman's husband and mother-in-law were arrested. Her body has been sent for post mortem, he said. The complainant has alleged that his daughter was being harassed over dowry since her marriage in 2015, the officer said.

HC sentences man to jail for a month for lying on oath

Taking a serious view against a man for lying on oath, the Delhi High Court has sentenced him to jail for a month for contempt of court and said it will be a great public disaster if the fountain of justice is allowed to be poisoned by anyone giving false statements in a court of law. Justice Manmohan said as the man had admittedly made false statements under oath, the court was of the view that it struck a blow at the rule of law and no court could ignore such a conduct, which had the tendency to shake public confidence in the judicial institutions because the very structure of an ordered life was put at stake. Besides sentencing the man to simple imprisonment for a month, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him. Bangladesh apex court upholds ex-PM Zia's bail in arson case

Bangladesh's Supreme Court today upheld the High Court decision granting a six-month interim bail to imprisoned former prime minister Khaleda Zia in an arson case relating to the attack on a passenger bus in 2015, media reports said. The 72-year-old three-time former premier, however, will have to stay in jail as other cases are pending against her. Eight people were killed after the bus was petrol bombed in Chittagong on February 3, 2015 during protests by the Bangladesh Nationslist Party (BNP)-Jamaat alliance. Two separate cases one for murder, the other under the Explosives Act were filed in Comilla against Zia, who is also the chairperson of the opposition BNP. BMC razes illegal under-construction hotel within 12 hours

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has pulled down an under-construction hotel, being built illegally near the city international airport, within 12 hours, an civic official said today. The unauthorised multi-storey structure being built in Sahar village was demolished between the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, the official said. "It was an under-construction hotel, where 30 rooms were planned. The illegal work was first noticed around seven months back by the BMC staff," the official said. "So far, up to 10,000 sq ft of construction work of three floors was completed. The building was being constructed on a plot at Sutar Pakhadi in Sahar village," he added. The civic administration earlier issued a 'stop work' notice and also filed a caveat in the court so that its demolition won't be stopped. Mystery surrounds death of 2 inmates at Patna shelter home

Two women inmates of a state-run shelter home here have died under mysterious circumstances, days after a man was arrested for reportedly asking the inmates of the home to escape by luring them with gifts. The inmates, aged 17 and 21 years, were staying at Aasra Shelter Home in Nepali Nagar locality of the city. "While the shelter home claimed the women died during treatment at Patna Medical College last night, the hospital authorities said the inmates were brought dead. Police was informed about the deaths only this morning," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Law and Order (Patna), Manoj Kumar Sudhanshu told PTI. The shelter home came into news when it was recently reported that four of its inmates had tried to run away. Woman gang-raped in JK's Reasi; police suspects she committed suicide

A 19-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and raped by two men, following which it is suspected that she committed suicide by jumping into the Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, a police official said today. The woman's father had lodged a missing complaint for his daughter on July 24, he said. After analysing the woman's call details, Paramjeet Singh was arrested, the officer said, adding that Singh revealed during interrogation that his friend, Pankaj Khajuria, was using a phone number on his name to entice her. An FIR was registered after the woman's relatives complained that she was abducted by Khajuria, his friend Naresh Kumar and Singh. Justice Mukesh R Shah was today sworn in as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court here. Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik administered the oath of office to Justice Shah at the Raj Bhavan here. Justice Shah was a judge of the Gujarat High Court before his appointment as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court. Justice Vijaya Tahilramani sworn in as Madras HC CJ

Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani was today sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit here. The Governor administered the oath of office to the new Chief Justice at a ceremony in the Raj Bhavan. Justice Tahilramani, who was the acting chief justice of the Bombay High Court, was recently appointed Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, succeeding Justice Indira Banerjee, who has been elevated to the Supreme Court. Justice Tahilramani is the third woman chief justice of the Madras High Court. Car of actor Vikram's son crashes into auto, 1 injured

Tamil fiml Actor Vikram's son Dhruv was arrested after a car allegedly driven by him rammed into a parked autorickshaw here, injuring its driver, early today, police said. Teen charged with beating Sikh man makes obscene gestures in court: Report

The teenager son of a police chief in California, who brutally assaulted a 71-year-old Sikh man, grinned and made obscene gestures during his first court appearance, according to a media report. Businessman arrested for sodomising minor boy

A 65-year old businessman was arrested in this south Odisha city for allegedly sodomising a seven-year old boy, police said today. Though the incident took place on July 22, the accused was arrested on Friday as he was undergoing treatment in a hospital in Bhubaneswar, said Inspector In-Charge of Bada Bazaar police station, Suresh Chandra Tripathy. A case was registered against the accused, on July 24, two days after the incident, when the father of the victim lodged an FIR, he said. Notorious drug peddler among 2 held in J-K

Two people, including a "notorious drug peddler", were arrested with heroin and poppy in two separate operations in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri and Jammu districts, police said today. Shakoor Ahmad, a resident of Dhani Dhar village, was arrested after seven gm of heroin was recovered from his possession during checking near the Rajouri district town last evening, a police officer said. Ahmad is a "notorious drug peddler" and is listed as an accused in a number of cases in Rajouri district. Tribunal rejects BP's claim for legal cost against govt

In a rebuff to BP plc, an international tribunal has held that the British energy giant cannot claim any legal cost from the Indian government as it was never part of an arbitration its partner Reliance Industries filed in the gas migration row with ONGC. Company secy not required to disclose non-filing of previous year's annual return: Court

A company secretary of a private firm is not mandated to disclose non-filing of balance sheet, profit and loss account and annual return for the previous financial year in his compliance certificate, a Delhi court has said. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pawan Singh Rajawat acquitted a company secretary of the charges of filing fake certificate, while accepting the submissions of his advocate Sanjay Kumar Singh that the law does not provide any format for indicating the 'non-filings' by the company secretary in the compliance certificate. Singh had told the court that accused Kapil Saluja, who was the company secretary of Infolance Software Solutions Ltd, was not "duty bound" under the provisions of Companies Act to indicate the non-filings by the firm in his compliance report.
