Four arrested for running honey-trap racket in Ghaziabad

A honey-trap racket was today busted with the arrest of four people, including two women, for allegedly blackmailing people by threatening to register false rape cases against them, police said. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the accused from the Kala Patthar road area in Indirapuram, Superintendent of Police (City) Akash Tomar said. During interrogation, they confessed that they had threatened a well-known person of filing a false rape case against him if he did not pay Rs 25 lakh to them, he said. They extorted money from more than a dozen people using the modus operandi, the SP said.

Venezuela asks Interpol to arrest politician over alleged plot

Venezuela said today it has asked Interpol to arrest an opposition politician exiled in Colombia and accused of involvement in an apparent attack against President Nicolas Maduro. "We are seeking code red for Mr. Julio Borges," Communications Minister Jorge Rodriguez said, referring to the former speaker of the National Assembly. The request for an Interpol red notice -- calling for police in another country to locate and provisionally arrest a suspect wanted in another -- follows what Venezuelan officials said was a drone assassination attempt on Maduro last weekend. Two arrested for robbing Delhi bizman

Two men were arrested today for allegedly robbing a businessman of more than eight lakh rupees in December 2016, the police said. The accused were identified as Sanjay (35) and Sohan alias Sonu (23), both residents of Haryana's Rohtak district and suspected to be members of Mainpal gang, they said. Based on a tip off, the police laid a trap near a cremation ground in Dwarka's Sector-17, where the accused were expected to arrive in a Scorpio car. Subsequently, both of them were arrested, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajit Kumar Singla said. Sanjay told the police that on December 13, 2016, during the demonetisation period, he and his associates Naveen, Sonu, Krishan, Banarasi and Raj, among others, robbed Rs 2,000 denomination currency notes worth over Rs 8 lakh from a businessman Anil Kumar and his friend, the ACP said. Man arrested in firing case in Delhi

A man has been arrested in connection with a firing incident that took place after a petty argument outside a shop in the Dwarka area here, police said today. Qasim was arrested and a juvenile apprehended in connection with the case, they added. Qasim got into an argument with Pawan outside the shop yesterday, following which a shot was fired in the air, officials said. CCTV footage showed another person, identified as Aamir, firing a gun and the bullet hitting the shutter of the shop, they added. The owner of the shop, Leela Ram, registered a complaint with police today and subsequently, Qasim was arrested, the official said. The accused was being interrogated and police is on the lookout for Aamir, he said.

Members of outfit booked for burning Constitution's copy

A case has been registered against some members of an outfit for allegedly burning a copy of the Constitution and shouting slogans against B R Ambedkar during a protest on the Parliament Street, the Delhi Police said today. Anil Tanwar, the national in-charge of the Akhil Bhartiya Bheem Sena, filed a complaint at the Parliament Street police station, alleging that members of Youth for Equality burnt a copy of the Constitution and shouted slogans against the Dalit icon yesterday. The complainant also submitted a CD containing a video of the incident, police said.

'Why not separate ministry for child development', asks Madras HC

The Madras High Court today said it is high time the Ministry for Women and Child Development is bifurcated to create another ministry in view of increasing incidents of child abuse. Justice N Kirubakaran asked the assistant solicitor general to get instructions from the Centre on why there cannot be separate ministries for women development and child development. He observed that single parenting can be dangerous for society as a child needs the affection of both the mother and the father. One cannot compensate the other and lack of such affection and love might cause behavioural changes in the child which may turn against the society, he observed. Justice Kirubakaran made the observation while hearing a contempt petition filed by Girija Raghavan against the Ministry for Women and Child Development for not obeying the court's September 16, 2015, order. Several CR suburban trains cancelled due to Mumbai motormen's

Central Railway commuters were severely inconvenienced today after suburban drivers, called motormen in railway lingo, followed a mechanism known as "work to rule" which led to the cancellation of scores of trains, said railway officials. The CR motormen have been demanding that the railways fill up 229 vacant posts in their cadre and also stop "harsh punishments" like dismissal from service for an offence called "Signal Passing at Danger" (SPAD). SPAD, or overshooting a red signal, is taken as a serious offence, almost at par with an accident, and motormen are liable to be dismissed from service if charges against them are proved. Agitating CR motormen, under the aegis of the Joint Action Forum, today said that vacancies in their cadre was forcing them to work overtime which in turn was causing stress-induced mistakes like SPAD. Pak SC issues show cause notice to PTI leader Aamir Liaquat

Family of four consumes poison in Agra, 2 dead

A man and his daughter died while his two sons are battling for life after the family allegedly consumed poison at their residence in Uttar Pradesh's Agra district, the police said today. The man, Maan Singh, his daughter Archana (11), and sons Abhay and Roopesh, residents of village Shyamo under Taj Ganj police station, consumed poison last night, they said. The family's neighbours saw the four lying on ground with white foam oozing out of their mouths and rushed them to the hospital, where Singh and Archana were declared brought dead, the police said. Abhay and Roopesh are in a critical condition and undergoing treatment at a private nursing home, they said. Singh's wife had died a fortnight ago after a long illness and the family was depressed over it, they said.

Wanted gangster arrested with accomplice in Gurgaon

A wanted gangster and his accomplice were arrested after a brief encounter on the Dwarka Expressway here, police said today. Amit Dagar (31), a sharp-shooter of the notorious Kaushal gang, and his accomplice Anil were arrested last night, Gurgaon Police PRO Subhash Bokan said. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted the accused on the Dwarka Expressway and a brief encounter ensued in which Dagar sustained a bullet injury to his leg, the official said. Dagar had a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head and was involved in multiple cases of heinous crimes, including murder, extortion, kidnapping, contract killing, gangster acts and others, he said. Guj: Foreign national arrested with cocaine worth Rs 1.5 cr

A foreign national was arrested today by the Narcotics Control Bureau and cocaine worth Rs 1.5 crore was seized from him, a senior official said. Victor Nanso, a Nigerian national, was nabbed early today morning after he alighted from a bus in Ahmedabad's CTM area and a search of his luggage revealed 273 grams of cocaine worth Rs 1.5 crore in the international market, said NCB zonal director Hari Om Gandhi. "He brought that contraband from Mumbai and it was meant to be delivered to his connection in Ahmedabad. We have arrested him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act Act and further probe is on," said Gandhi.

3 more Romanians held in ATM fraud case

The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police has arrested three more Romanians for their alleged involvement in the ATM fraud in the city, a senior officer said today. One person was nabbed from Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh, while the other two were caught from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, he said. With these arrests, altogether eight persons, including five Romanians, have been arrested in the ATM fraud cases. Nearly 80 customers of nationalised banks in the city have been duped by ATM fraudulent transactions made using cloned debit or credit cards. The customs department officials arrested Voico Aurel alias Nana when he was trying to flee to Nepal, the officer said. He said Kolkata Police sleuths got the tip off about Nana after interrogating the two other Romanians arrested in the case and informed the UP officials. Man asks shelter home girls to escape, arrested

Close on the heels of the shelter home sex scandal in Muzaffarpur, police today arrested a 50-year-old man for allegedly asking the inmates of a state-run home here to escape, promising them gifts. The police had received complaints from the inmates of the Aasra shelter home in the Nepali Nagar locality here that Ram Nagina Singh alias Banarasi, who lived nearby, was trying to persuade them to flee, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Law and Order), Patna, Manoj Kumar Sudhanshu said. "We visited the shelter home and questioned the inmates and others. We also interrogated Banarasi. He was arrested and sent to jail. Three arrested in Maharashtra with explosive materials

Three persons, including one affiliated to a right-wing outfit, were arrested today, with the Maharashtra police saying that it had recovered a large quantity of explosives that were to be used for carrying out blasts at various places in the state. The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Maharashtra, which carried out the arrests on the basis of a specific information, said it was investigating whether those arrested had any connections with the killings of journalist Gauri Lankesh and rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare. Travel agent arrested for duping pilgrims

: A city travel agent was arrested here today for allegedly cheating 3,500 people of Rs 10 crore in the name of offering Umrah and Ziarath pilgrimages. An official release said Sayyed Altaf Hussain offered different tour packages for the Umrah and Ziarath pilgrimage and cheated the public by not honouring the agreement. Nine cases have been registered in Andhra Pradesh against Hussain, it said. He was arrested from his office in the city, from where he used to collect cash from the pilgrims.
