CCI dismisses complaint against Vestas Wind Tech India

The Competition Commission has dismissed a complaint alleging unfair business practices against wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Technology India with regard to service conditions of the equipments supplied by the firm. In an order dated August 7, the fair trade regulator said no prima facie case of contravention of the provisions of either Section 3 or 4 of the Competition Act is made out against Vestas. Accordingly, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) disposed of the complaint. Section 3 and 4 of the Competition Act deal with anti-competitive agreements and abuse of dominant market position, respectively. The complainant, Hyderabad-based Swarna Properties, had stated that it had entered into a pact with Vestas for supply of wind turbines and the sale of the same was conditional upon acceptance of maintenance services, among others. Gole market rape: DCW, NHRC issue notice, sought report

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Friday issued a notice, seeking report over rape of a six-year-old girl, which took place inside the premises of a government school, here in Gole market area.The NHRC issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Delhi Government and the Delhi Commissioner of Police, calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks.While, the DCW has sought report from the Delhi police and the government school on the same by August 16, 2018.The Delhi Commissioner of Police (DCP) today informed that the accused in the matter is being interrogated and the investigation is underway."The victim identified the man and he was arrested. Malaysia ex-PM Najib to face corruption trial in February

Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak's trial on corruption charges related to a massive financial scandal that led to his shock election defeat will start in February, a court said today. Najib, 65, will stand trial for criminal breach of trust, money laundering and power abuse linked to billions of dollars allegedly looted from sovereign wealth fund 1MDB. The former leader, who is free on bail, has been hit with seven charges so far, including three for money laundering lodged on Wednesday over claims he pocketed 42 million ringgit (USD 10.3 million) from a former unit of 1MDB. These are in addition to the charges he faced last month after he was first arrested -- three for criminal breach of trust and a separate count that he abused his position to take the money. Najib has denied all the charges. Malaysia's new government, under Najib's 93-year-old former mentor Mahathir Mohamad, is probing the corruption allegations involving 1MDB -- which was set up and overseen by Najib .

Austrian freed on USD 200,000 bail in US underage sex case

An Austrian teenager arrested in Florida for having had sex with a 15-year-old girl he met on the internet has been released on USD 200,000 bail, Austria's foreign ministry said today. The arrest of the man, who turned 18 in June and who has been named as Leo, has attracted much attention in Austria, with a campaign being launched to raise funds for his bail and legal expenses. "We're very happy that this Austrian has been released and that he is under the care of his parents," foreign ministry spokesman Thomas Schnoell said. His arrest has caused particular concern as in Austria sexual relations with an adult are legal from the age of 14 as long as they are not in the context of an unequal relationship and there is no coercion. However, in Florida, sexual relations with anyone under 16 can be punishable by heavy prison sentences. SBI ATM carrying Rs 39,000 stolen in Bihar

An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of the State Bank of India carrying Rs 39,000 was stolen by unidentified persons from Navoday chowk in Bhojpur district in the early hours today, police said. Sub divisional police officer, Jagdishpur, Manjit said the theft occurred at around 3 am when a police team was patrolling the area. The police personnel noticed the machine being lifted into a car and despite a hot chase, the miscreants managed to escape, he said. "We are proceeding on the basis of CCTV footage but the picture is not clear bacause of darkness," the SDPO said. Quoting SBI officials, who have lodged a case with the Bihiya police, Superintendent of Police Avkash Kumar said, the ATM was out of order for the last two months. NHRC issues notices to Delhi govt, police; seeks report over rape of class 2 student in school

The NHRC today issued notices to Delhi government and the police seeking a detailed report in the alleged rape of a class two student in a New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) school premises in upscale Gole Market area here. Taking a serious note of media reports of the incident, which took place on August 8, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) observed that it amounts to violation of the victim's human rights. According to a statement by the human rights panel, it has issued notices to the Delhi Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Police seeking for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks. The chief secretary has been asked to also inform the commission whether all the guidelines and directions issued by authorities for the safety of students are being followed by the schools in Delhi, it stated. Idol theft case: Police give undertaking to HC not to arrest

Tamil Nadu Police's Idol Wing today gave an undertaking to the Madras High Court that it would not arrest TVS Motor Company's Chairman Venu Srinivasan, for a period of six weeks in connection with an idol theft case. The matter came up for hearing before a Division Bench, comprising Justices R Mahadevan and P D Audikesavulu, constituted to hear cases regarding idol theft. Before senior counsel B Kumar could to start his arguments on behalf of Srinivasan, personnel of the Idol Wing's Special Investigation Team, who were in the court, gave the undertaking. After recording the undertaking, the bench posted the matter for hearing after six weeks. Srinivasan had moved the court yesterday seeking anticipatory bail in connection with an idol theft case. Youth commits suicide in Rajouri

A youth committed suicide by shooting himself in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. Kuldeep Kumar (28) shot himself with a 12 bore gun at Jamolla village late last night. Kumar died on the spot After receiving information on the incident, a police party rushed to the spot and the body was shifted to a hospital for post-mortem. After legal formalities were conducted, the body was handed over to the family members for last rites. A case was registered and further investigations is going on, the officer said.

Indian origin govt lawyer fined for drunk driving in Singapore

An Indian origin senior government lawyer in Singapore was today banned from driving for one year and fined SGD 1,600 (Rs 80,396) for drunk driving. Admitting that he had an alcoholic cocktail at a pub before heading home, 39-year-old Jeyendran Jeyapal said it was his first offence and pleaded for minimum punishment in the court. Jeyapal, a deputy senior state counsel in Singapore's Attorney-General's Chambers, also said he had been cooperative with police officers when stopped, the Channel News Asia reported. The lawyer was stopped by a traffic police officer at a road block along Second Hospital Avenue at around 4:50 am on February 11 this year. The officer noticed that Jeyapal had "alcoholic breath" following which a breathalyser test was done in which he failed. Jeyapal was then taken to the Traffic Police Division where it was revealed that he had 48 mg of alcohol in every 100 ml of breath, which exceeded the limit of 35mg, deputy public prosecutor Bhajanvir Singh told the court .

NDMC school rape case: DCW sends notices to Delhi Police, institute's authority

Following the alleged rape of a six-year-old girl at a civic body-run school here, the DCW today sent notices to the police and the school's authority, asking them to inform it about the safety measures at the institute. The girl, a class two student of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC)-run school in the Gol Market area, was allegedly raped by an electrician inside the institute's premises, police said. Calling for strong action against the accused, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal asked if a background check of the electrician had been done and whether there were safety measures such as CCTV cameras in the school. "The DCW issued notices to the Delhi Police and the school's authority to ascertain safety measures implemented in the school," she said. DRI seizes Pak-smuggled heroin in Kashmir

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested three smugglers in Srinagar with 627 grams of high quality heroin which was being smuggled from Pakistan, officials said today. The drug was to be transported to Punjab from Kashmir, they said. Acting on intelligence inputs, the DRI officials intercepted a vehicle at Batwara area in Srinagar on Wednesday and arrested three Punjab-based smugglers, a statement issued by the agency said. "Rummaging of the intercepted car resulted in recovery of 627 grams of high quality heroin. The contraband was concealed in a specially designed cavity. "The narcotic material and the car have been seized by the DRI and three Punjab-based smugglers have been arrested," the statement issued by the agency said. Preliminary investigations suggest that the seized heroin was sourced from across the border, it said.

Man gets 20 yrs in jail for raping mentally challenged woman

A POCSO court in Mizoram's Champai district has sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment of 20 years for raping a mentally challenged woman. POCSO court special judge R Vanlalvena also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Hrangthanthuama, 30, yesterday. He had committed the crime against the woman, 25, in September last year. A criminal case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) was registered against Hrangthanthuama after relatives of the victim had filed a complaint with the police.

Spain taxman knocks 2 million euros off Ronaldo tax settlement: report

After ordering football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to pay 18.8 million euros to settle a tax fraud claim, Spanish authorities have reduced the sum by two million euros, the El Mundo daily reported today. Spain's taxman and Ronaldo's advisors made the deal to settle claims the 33-year-old, who has since moved to Italy's Juventus, hid income generated from image rights while he was playing for Real Madrid. The agreement also includes a two-year jail sentence which he won't serve. Sentences of up to two years are generally not enforced in Spain for first-time offenders in non-violent crimes. According to El Mundo, who had access to documents of the settlement, tax authorities realised he paid two million euros too much last year for image rights he sold in 2014. That means he only has to pay 16.7 million euros, the report said. It added that Ronaldo has already paid 13.4 million euros. Spain's finance ministry would not comment on the report. The Supreme Court on Friday took into the record the affidavit filed by the Centre which stated that the President had rejected the proposal to release seven convicts jailed in Tamil Nadu in connection with the assassination case of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.The apex court later adjourned the matter after hearing.The affidavit from the Central Government came after the apex court asked the Centre to explain its take on Tamil Nadu's 2016 decision to acquit all seven convicts of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.In May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber, during an election rally in Sriperumpudur.Besides Nalini, Perarivalan, Murugan, Santhan, Robert Pious, Jayakumar and Ravichandran were convicted in the case. All seven convicts are serving life terms and had been in jail for last 27 years.

Two smugglers arrested, 34 animals rescued in J-K

Two smugglers were arrested and 34 head of cattle rescued in four separate incidents in the Jammu and the Rajouri districts of the state, police said today. A police team intercepted a truck in Moralian area in the Jammu district and rescued 20 animals from being carried to Kashmir Valley today, they said. Two men - Jagmohan and Mohammad Aslam - were arrested and a case registered against them, they said. In a similar incident, a police team rescued 14 animals in the Rajouri district last night, they said, adding the smugglers managed to escape.

Centre says release of Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts will have global ramifications

The Centre today told the Supreme Court it does not concur with the Tamil Nadu government's proposal to release seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, saying remission of their sentence will set a "dangerous precedent" and have "international ramifications". A bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi, Navin Sinha and K M Joseph took the document, filed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, on record and adjourned the matter. On January 23, the apex court had asked the Centre to take a decision within three months on a 2016 letter by the Tamil Nadu government seeking its concurrence on releasing the seven convicts. The letter, written on March 2, 2016, had said the state government has already decided to release the seven convicts, but it is necessary to seek the Centre's concurrence as per an apex court order of 2015. "The central government, in pursuance of section 435 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, does not concur to the proposal of the government of Tamil Nadu contained .
