SC agrees to hear appeals against Talwars' acquittal in Aarushi-Hemraj murder case

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear the CBI's appeal challenging the acquittal of dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the 2008 twin murder case of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj. A bench headed by Justices Ranjan Gogoi said the CBI's appeal would be heard along with Hemraj's wife's pending petition, which has also challenged the acquittal of the Talwars by the Allahabad High Court on October 12 last year. "Leave granted," the bench, also comprising Justices Navin Sinha and K M Joseph, said. Representing the CBI, Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh referred to the plea filed by Hemraj's wife, after which the bench said the probe agency's appeal would be tagged with it. Fourteen-year-old Aarushi was found dead inside her room in Talwars' Noida residence with her throat slit in May 2008. The needle of suspicion had initially moved towards 45-year-old Hemraj, who had gone missing, but his body was recovered from the terrace of the house two days later. As

Man arrested for posting fake letter from President on Facebook

A year after a case was registered against the director of a management college in Bengaluru for allegedly posting a fake letter from the President of India on his Facebook account, the man was arrested, police said today. The accused, Hari Krishna Maram, aged between 45-50, was in the US for more than a year but returned to Bengaluru this month and was arrested by Cyber Crime Cell of Delhi Police on Wednesday, they added. The case was being investigated by sub-inspector Bhanu Pratap of the cyber cell after a complaint was filed by the president's press secretary last year. Maram had allegedly posted the photo of an "appreciation letter" received from the president for a book he had authored on digital marketing, said an officer privy to the probe. The letter was fake and Maram had posted the letter to gain publicity and more eyeballs for the book he had supposedly written, the officer said. 185 people held in Pune for vandalism, violence during Maratha bandh

At least 185 people, including five women, were arrested in connection with incidents of vandalism and violence in Pune city during the bandh called by Maratha groups over their demand for reservation for the community in government jobs and education, police said today. They added that some of the protesters hurled stones at the police personnel in the Chandani Chowk area of the city during the stir yesterday. In another incident, some miscreants went on a rampage after the conveners of the Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) submitted a memorandum of demands to District Collector Naval Kishor Ram. They damaged the main gate of the administrative building at the collector's office, broke the security cabin's glass and some bulbs. According to the police, the miscreants did not leave the building premises till late evening and were detained after a mild lathicharge. Man beaten to death over suspicion of being thief

A man was beaten to death allegedly by a group villagers who suspected him of being a thief in Bijapur village here, the police said today. A farmer spotted three men allegedly attempting to steal the electric motor of a tube well in his filed. He called other villagers who caught hold one of them and beat him to death, said SHO Subhash Rathore. The other two managed to escape, he added. Body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem, Rathore said, adding that the victim is yet to be identified.

Pak court dismisses Indian citizen's plea seeking jail term remission

Man held with pistol in Jammu

A man was arrested and a country-made pistol was recovered from him in the Mastgarh area here, the police said today. Following a tip-off, Gopal Das was arrested and the pistol with seven live cartridges was seized from him, they said. Aarushi murder: SC admits CBI appeal challenging Talwars' acquittal

The Supreme Court on Friday admitted an appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) challenging the acquittal of Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in connection with the murder of their daughter Aarushi and doemstic help Hemraj.The Allahabad High Court had acquitted Aarushi's parents, Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, in the case last year. Challenging the acquittal, the CBI moved the apex court on March 8 and appealed that the Allahabad High Court "in its judgment had erred on many fronts in the case."Suspecting the Talwars' involvement in the murder, the police had named Rajesh for murdering Arushi and Hemraj alleging that he did so after finding them in an "objectionable" position. J K: PSA slapped against 'hardcore criminal', sent to jail

Police today slapped the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) against a "hardcore criminal" after he was arrested in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir. Shivraj Singh alias Raju, 26, had formed a gang to create terror among the people in Samba, police said. A dossier was prepared against Raju for his alleged involvement in a number of criminal activities causing threat to the life and liberty of the people in the district, especially the Vijaypur town, they said. Deputy Commissioner Sushma Chauhan issued orders of arrest under the PSA and police implemented it and sent him to sub-jail Hiranagar, police said. The PSA is an administrative detention law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases. Raju was encouraging and recruiting criminal-minded people to join his gang in a bid to disturb law and order, police said. He was also involved in drug smuggling, they added.

Bangladeshi infiltrator caught by BSF in Meghalaya

A Bangladeshi was caught when he illegally entered the country crossing over the unfenced border in South Garo Hills district in Meghalaya, a BSF spokesperson said today. Md Jaharul Islam, who is an active member of the Jamat-e-Islami Foundation in Bangladesh, was caught on August eight, he told PTI. Islam entered India with a motive to visit the north eastern states, he said. MP govt orders regular inspection of women's hostels

The Madhya Pradesh government today ordered monthly inspection of women's hostels in the state, after an inmate of a facility for differently-abled women was allegedly raped by its director. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has issued directions to officials in this regard to prevent recurrence of such incidents at women's hostels and orphanages. The director of a hostel for speech and hearing impaired women in the Awadhpuri area here was arrested on Wednesday night for allegedly raping a 20-year-old deaf and mute tribal inmate. "I have taken a meeting of the officials concerned and directed them to conduct monthly inspections of such (state) aided and unaided facilities where girls are residing," Chouhan told reporters at his residence. "The inspection will be carried out by the collector and superintendent of police in each district on a monthly basis," he said. Chouhan said similar rules will also be framed for private hostels to ensure safety of inmates. "Rules will be framed .

Wanted criminal arrested after encounter in Ganjam district

A notorious criminal wanted in over 10 cases was arrested after an exchange of fire with police in Aska area of Odisha's Ganjam district, police said today. A 9mm pistol, ammunition and a motorcycle were seized from the accused, identified as Kalu Biswal (30) of Baliapalli village, who was arrested yesterday, said Inspector In-Charge of Aska police station, Santosh Kumar Jena. 'Grave situation', says SC on incidents of vandalism during protests

The Supreme Court today termed "grave" the incidents of vandalism of private and public properties by various groups during protests across the country and said it will not wait for the government to amend the law. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said it will issue directions in the matter. HC extends bail period of Lalu Prasad till Aug 20

The Jharkhand High Court today extended the provisional bail period of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, convicted in four fodder scam cases, till August 20 on medical grounds. The period was extended by Justice Apresh Kumar Singh. "We have prayed for the extension of the bail period for three more months on medical grounds," Prasad's counsel Prabhat Kumar told PTI. The high court had on May 11 granted six weeks provisional bail to Prasad and again extended it till August 14, Chitaranjan Sinha, another counsel for the RJD chief, said. Prasad is currently being treated at the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai, Sinha said. He has been convicted in four cases of the multi-crore fodder scam.
