Appoint IGP rank cop for probe against Selaiyur police:HC

The Madras High Court has directed the DGP to appoint an officer in the rank of IGP to conduct an inquiry against Selaiyur police for registering a false case to protect the 'correspondent' of a private school from criminal proceedings against him. The matter relates to the death of a seven-year-old girl on July 25, 2012, who slipped through a hole on the floor of the school bus while returning home and the rear wheels ran over her. Justice P N Prakash directed the sessions court at Chengalpattu to expedite the trial relating to the student's death. A case was registered against the bus driver and against the Management of Zion School, including Vijayan. The trial was set to commence at the I Additional District and Sessions Judge, Chengalpattu when Vijayan approached the court for quashing the proceedings against him. Cong expresses concern over safety of women

The Jammu and Kashmir unit of Congress today expressed concern over the alarming number of crimes against women recently reported across the country and questioned the centre and respective state governments for their alleged failure. Ravinder Sharma, chief spokesperson of state Congress, said collective will and effort are required to reverse this grim situation. The shameful incident of minor girls being raped at shelter homes run by a government-funded NGO in Bihar reflects the deep rooted nexus and total failure of the law enforcing agencies, Sharma said. Seven youths were allegedly tortured at Sanour police station near here, prompting authorities to suspend an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), police officials said today. ASI Narinder Singh, along with a constable, intercepted seven youths, who were on their way to attend a religious function at a shrine in Patiala on Sunday, they said. Amardeep Singh, one of the victims, alleged that the ASI was in an inebriated state and started misbehaving with them. "When we started making videos of his unruly behaviour, the ASI took us to Sanour police station," the victim said. In his complaint, Amardeep Singh claimed that the ASI physically tortured them and then took him to a secluded place and poured liquor into his mouth. Army jawan arrested for killing wife over dowry

An army jawan and his parents have been arrested for allegedly killing his wife over dowry demands in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said today. The incident happened in a village under Thana Bhawan police station area of the district. The family of the woman, Shivani, had filed a complaint, accusing her husband -- posted in Ladakh -- and her in-laws of strangulating her to death on Monday, and then hanging her body to show it as a case of suicide. a police officer said. A case against four people were registered, following which the jawan, his father and mother were arrested yesterday, the officer said. The woman's father has alleged that his daughter was being harassed for dowry. Indonesian shaman arrested for keeping sex slave for 15 years

An Indonesian shaman has been arrested for abducting a teenager and keeping her as a sex slave for 15 years by claiming he was possessed by the spirit of her imaginary boyfriend, police said today. The distressed woman, who is now aged 28, was found naked by police on Sunday in a jungle cave near the village of Bajungan in Central Sulawesi province. She was reported missing by her family in 2003, when she was 13, after visiting the shaman for treatment of an illness. The victim's father spent years looking for his daughter. But police said the shaman, whose son is married to the victim's sister, had told the family the girl had gone far away and would not return. "Every day, for many years, the shaman had sex with her under the pretence he was possessed by a male spirit," local police chief Iqbal Alqudusy told AFP on Wednesday. The jury in the trial of England cricketer Ben Stokes was today shown security camera footage of a gay man allegedly grabbing the groin of another defendant shortly before a brawl erupted. Stokes, 27, is on trial at Bristol Crown Court in southwest England for alleged affray, along with 27-year-old Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale, 28. Civic body chairperson among 3 held for graft by ACB in Raj

The chairman of Beawar municipality was arrested today when he was taking a bribe of Rs 2.25 lakh from a doctor for converting a land into commercial property, an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said. The ACB sleuths arrested municipality chairperson Babita Chauhan, her husband Narendra Chauhan and a middleman Shiv Prasad in connection with the case. A complaint was lodged on July 23 with the ACB that the chairperson had demanded Rs 2.25 lakh for changing the land use of a residential property into commercial. The complaint was verified and the three accused were arrested, Ajmer ACB additional SP Chandra Prakash Sharma said. The ACB officials had received another complaint against the three arrested accused for demanding ownership of a commercial property worth Rs 80 lakh in the complex in lieu of approving its building and construction plan. Govt considering views of sub-group on revision of royalty rates on coal

The government is considering the recommendations of a sub-group with regard to revision of present royalty rates on coal, Parliament was informed today. "The Study Group has submitted its recommendations...which is under consideration with the government," Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said in a written reply to Lok Sabha. The Centre had earlier set up a sub-group under the Chairmanship of Coal Additional Secretary for examining the issue of revision of royalty rates on coal and lignite, the minister said. The Odisha government had earlier in the year asked the Centre to revise the coal royalty. Stating that the royalty on coal was last revised in April 2012, Odisha government said the royalty rate should be revised every three years. Therefore, the coal royalty revision is due since April, 2015, it had said. In a separate reply, the minister said in the last three financial years and in 2018-19 (till July 31), two mines -- Marki Mangli-I and Majra in Maharashtra -- have been auctioned .

Body of man found in Delhi's Narela

The body of a 23-year-old man was found today near the Safiabad border in Delhi's Narela area with severe injury marks on his face and head, police said. The deceased, identified as Karan, was a resident of Safiyabad, Haryana. Yesterday, he left home at 10 pm, a senior officer said. Ludhiana City Centre scam: Court adjourns hearing to Aug 16

A court today adjourned to August 16 the hearing in the alleged Rs 1,144-crore Ludhiana City Centre scam in which Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is among the accused. The case, alleging that a private builder was favoured during Singh's previous term as chief minister, was filed in 2007 when the SAD-BJP government was in power. District and Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh adjourned the hearing here after the complainant's counsel sought more time. In August last year, the state's Vigilance Bureau had filed a closure report in the case, saying a reinvestigation had found nothing to substantiate the charge that there had been a scam. Pak judge recuses from hearing petition against conviction of Sharif family

A Pakistani judge has recused himself from hearing a petition filed against the conviction and sentencing of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law in the Avenfield properties corruption case, a media report said today. Lahore High Court's Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza, who headed a three-member bench constituted by LHC Chief Justice on August 4 to hear the petition, recused himself citing personal reasons, Geo TV reported. Justice Sajid Mehmood Sethi and Justice Mujahid Mustaqeem made up the rest of the bench. 3 Nepalese held with 8 kg charas in Shimla

Three Nepalese nationals including a woman were today arrested here for allegedly smuggling drugs and over eight kilogram of charas was recovered from them, police said. The special investigative unit of Shimla Police caught the accused, Mankumari, Jai Kumar and Kharag Bahadur near a market in Theog in the capital of the hill-state, they said. Upon searching them, 16 packets of charas weighing just over 8 kg was found in Bahadur's bag, they added. Woman, her twins found dead in well

A woman and her twins were found dead in a well in Rajasthan's Udaipur district toady, police said. The deceased - Kailashi Gayari (23) and her sons Love and Kush (2) - were residents of Mandap village here. They were missing since yesterday, Station House Officer Phool Chand said. SC reserves order on pleas challenging constitutional validity of adultery law

The Supreme Court today reserved its verdict on pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the penal law on adultery. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said it would pass orders, after Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand, appearing for the Centre, concluded her arguments today. The hearing in the case by the bench, which also comprised Justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, went on for six days and had commenced on August 1. Earlier in the day, the apex court had asked the Centre "what public good" the penal law on adultery served as it provided that no offence would be made if the husband of a woman approves an adulterous relationship. Woman molested in rickshaw, co-passenger held

A 19-year-old woman was allegedly molested by a male co-passenger in a shared rickshaw in the city, police said today. The incident took place late last night and the 29-year-old accused, Sagar Dumbre, was arrested in the wee hours today, police added. The complainant said that she had boarded the shared rickshaw at Gamdevi Maidan around 9.30 pm and was on her way to Chirag Nagar when Dumbre allegedly molested her, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. The woman lodged a complaint with Naupada police station, following which the accused was arrested around 1 am from his residence in Laxmi Nagar, she added. National Herald case: No relief for Rahul Gandhi
