Police are on the lookout for a DMK worker in connection with an alleged assault on the employees of a restaurant here after it declined to serve him food since it had closed for the day. A video of the incident that happened on Sunday night went viral on social media today, where a couple of persons are seen thrashing the employees of the restaurant after talking to them for a while. A senior police official said the accused Yuvaraj was a DMK member and that a case has been registered against him and some of his accomplices in connection with the assault. The incident happened at Virugambakkam. They are absconding, the official added. According to the hotel staff, the group demanded that they be served food but were told that the restaurant had closed for the day. Following this, they got angry and suddenly started assaulting some staff members, the employees said.
The Delhi High Court today extended till September 28 the interim protection from arrest granted to senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on his pleas seeking anticipatory bail in the INX Media case lodged by the ED and the CBI. The matter was mentioned before Justice A K Pathak, who asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to file a reply within four weeks. During the hearing, the CBI told the court that it has already filed its reply in the case and requested for a shorter date saying that it was an important matter. However, Justice Pathak, who initially was not inclined for shorter date, later agreed by making it clear that longer dates were given as workload was more due to shortage of judges. A police complaint was lodged against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a youth leader here today over her alleged provocative remarks on Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft. Sudipta Hazarika, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad, filed the complaint at the North Lakhimpur Sadar police station over Banerjee's remarks yesterday that the NRC in Assam could lead to a "bloodbath and a civil war in the country", the police said. "Going against the Supreme Court Mamata Banerjee is making all efforts to halt the NRC process by meeting the Union Home Minister. There is apprehension that an uncalled for situation may be created anytime. In different cases of alleged land grab in the city, police have retrieved property worth Rs 12 crore and arrested eight people. This included retrieval of a 12,000 square feet property at nearby Sholinganallur, where the accused "grabbed" the land using forged documents and impersonating the original owner, police said. This property was valued at Rs five crore, they added. Similarly, a 9600 sq.ft. property grabbed by some people at Pallikkaranai using faked documents was retrieved following a complaint from the land owner, they said. In another case, some people used a similar modus operandi and 'grabbed' 3600 sq.ft of land at Pallikkaranai. Later, they pledged the property documents with a public sector bank at T Nagar for a sum of Rs 3.5 crore, police said. Overall, land valued at Rs 12.5 crore grabbed by the accused was retrieved from them and eight people were arrested in connection with the cases, police said. The Bombay High Court today asked actor Preity Zinta to respond to a petition filed by industrialist Ness Wadia seeking to quash a 2014 case lodged against him by the actor for allegedly outraging her modesty. Wadia's counsel told the court they wanted to "bury the hatchet". "We (Wadia) want to bury the hatchet. The complainant is married now and has moved on with her life. A woman has been arrested by the police in neighbouring Palghar district for allegedly hacking her own son to death. A case of murder was registered against Jaya Tarela (46), resident of Nalla Sopara, at Waliv police station yesterday, an official said. The victim was identified as Santosh Tarela (27). Santosh often drank liquor and harassed his mother, the police officer said. As per the complaint filed by the woman's husband, Santosh came home drunk on the night of July 30 and picked up a quarrel with his mother. In a fit of anger, Jaya got hold of an axe and hacked him to death on the spot, the complaint said. She was arrested yesterday. Further probe is underway.

A revenue official was arrested for allegedly molesting a widow inside his office chamber in the outskirts of the city here, police said today. Naib-Tehsildar Hans Raj was arrested after the victim lodged a written complaint against him at the Khour police station yesterday, a police official said. The woman alleged that the officer allegedly molested her when she visited his office on Monday for settlement of her case for appointment on compassionate grounds, he said. A popular Pakistani Pashto stage actress and singer was shot dead allegedly by her husband due to domestic dispute in northwest Pakistan today, police said. The incident took place at Nowshera district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where the actress, Reshma, was living at her parents' home following differences with her husband, they said. Reshma's brother, Obaidullah, lodged an FIR with the police and accused her husband Faida Khan of committing the crime. According to the FIR, Faida, who was working abroad, had recently returned to the country. Today he went to his in-laws' residence to convince his wife to return home. However, Reshma refused to go with him. Her refusal infuriated Faida who opened fire at his wife, killing her on the spot.
A 48-year-old woman was stabbed to death and her son injured allegedly by six men over an old enmity, police said today. The incident took place last evening in Unda village which comes under the jurisdiction of Baran Sadar police station. The accused allegedly attacked Rukmanibai Nagar with knives and stabbed her to death outside her house, said Aashish Bhargav, the SHO at Baran Sadar police station. Later in the evening, the men attacked the deceased's son Shyambehari Nagar (26) while he was returning home on his bike, Bhargav said. The body was handed over to the family members after postmortem. The 38-year-old Vietnamese-origin step-mother, Tran Thi Thuy Hang, lost her cool when the parrot 'Lucky' flew from her step-daughter's shoulder to bit her on the right cheek on October 27 last year. The manicurist, a permanent resident here, ran into her room and complained to her 60-year old husband, Yu Ching Meng, demanding that the parrot be removed from the apartment they lived in. A large quantity of cowhide was seized today from a licenced abattoir allegedly involved in unauthorised slaughtering of cows in Rajasthan's Alwar district, the police said. The hides of 220 cows along with those of 82 buffaloes and 45 goats were seized from the abattoir at Govindgarh in Alwar following revelations made by an accused arrested in a cow slaughtering case yesterday, Govindgarh SHO Dara Singh told PTI. During his interrogation, accused Shakil Qureshi revealed that a licenced abattoir at Govindgarh, being run by one Salim in partnership with Bharatpur resident Sattar, was involved in unauthorised butchering of cows. A Delhi court today allowed Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, accused in a case related to his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death in a luxury hotel here, to travel abroad. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal allowed Tharoor's application seeking permission for eight visits to five countries, including the US, Canada and Germany, till December. The court placed several conditions on Tharoor, while noting that there was nothing on record to suggest that he may flee justice. "He (Tharoor) has cooperated with the investigation.
