Man kills fiancee on suspicion of affair, held
A 25-year-old man was arrested today for allegedly killing his 20-year-old fiancee here on suspicion that she was in relationship with another man, the police said. The incident occurred at Oval Maidan in south Mumbai, when the accused Salman Shekh allegedly stabbed Nasrin Shekh, following an argument, a police official said. The deceased was working at a food joint in south Mumbai while the accused is a resident of Mumbra in neighbouring Thane district, he said. Police were alerted about a woman lying in an injured condition at the ground this morning, he said. A team of Azad Maidan Police rushed to the spot and found the woman unconscious with deep injuries on her stomach and other parts of the body, he said. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead before admission, he said. Cow slaughter bigger crime than terrorism: BJP MLA
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gyan Dev Ahuja has said that cow slaughtering is a bigger crime than terrorism.The BJP Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Rajasthan also expressed his ire over several incidents of mob lynching and cow vigilantism and said "sentiments of crores of Hindus get hurt, when a cow is killed.""Cow slaughtering is a bigger crime than terrorism. Main suspect arrested in cow slaughter case: Police
The police today arrested the main suspect in a case of alleged cow slaughter in Govindgarh in Alwar district. Shakil Qureshi (24) was the fourth person arrested in the case, Govindgarh station house officer Dara Singh said. His wife, mother and sister-in-law were arrested yesterday with about 40 kilos of meat, suspected to be beef. The police said they had raided a house after a tip off that a cow had been slaughtered and found the women packaging the meat. A veterinarian's report said the meat was beef and its samples were sent to forensic experts for further confirmation, police said.
Nigeria Shiite cleric supporters acquitted of protest charges
A Nigerian judge today cleared over 80 Shiite supporters of a pro-Iranian cleric of criminal charges linked to a violent protest in 2015, defence and prosecution lawyers said. Justice David Shiri Wyom at the Kaduna State High Court ruled in favour of the defence's no case submission, saying that the state did not present enough evidence to go ahead with proceedings. Prosecutors had said the supporters of pro-Iranian cleric Ibrahim Zakzaky had conspired to attack the military convoy of army chief Tukur Buratai. "What the court found was that there was no credible evidence," defence lawyer Maxwell Kyon told AFP. "It's really a big victory," Kyon said, noting that the ruling could bolster Zakzaky's case. Zakzaky, who is accused of orchestrating the attack, has been detained since 2015 despite court orders that he should be freed. The court is set to hear his bail application on Thursday. NIA raids Congress' Manipur MLA; recovers arms, ammo
The NIA has carried out raids at the residence of a Congress MLA in Manipur and recovered an assortment of weapons and ammunition, including a pistol missing from the Director General of Police (DGP) pool, the agency spokesperson said here today. The central agency searched the premises of Saikul MLA Yamthong Haokip at Mantripukhi in the Imphal East district yesterday as part of its probe into a criminal case of missing of 56 pistols and 58 magazines from the DG pool 'kote' (armoury) located in the premises of the battalion of Manipur Rifles, between September, 2016 and early 2017. ACB arrests WCD deputy director for misappropriating govt funds meant for Aaganwadis
Rajasthan Anti Corruption Bureau today arrested a deputy director of Women and Child Development department for allegedly misappropriating government funds and resorting to various irregularities in distribution of nutrition diet in Aaganwadis in Nagaur district in collusion with contractors involved in the job, an ACB official said. The ACB sleuths also recovered a sum of Rs 55,000, including Rs 40,000 of bribe money the deputy director Usha Rani Chaudhary had allegedly taken yesterday. In a raid on 11 locations in the Nagaur district, the ACB also detained three private contractors, the official said. During raids, on of the contractor Hari Singh was detained and Rs 50 lakh was seized from his residence in Degana area in the district, apart from records related to the irregularities, the official said. Man booked for posting 'offensive' photo of Adityanath on Twitter
An FIR was registered against a member of Nagar Panchayat (urban local body) in Deoria district for allegedly posting an objectionable photograph of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Twitter, police said. Following the complaint lodged by Hindu Yuva Vahini of Deoria unit today, police started investigations in the case, though, no arrests have been made so far. "Member of Lar Nagar Panchayat Birbal Yadav had posted an objectionable picture on Twitter yesterday. It was shared by other people on various social media platforms," Deoria district co-ordinator of HYV Neeraj Shahi alleged, adding that a written complaint was lodged against Yadav. Quazi prepares fake marriage contract for rape accused, held
A qazi was arrested here today for allegedly preparing a fake "Nikahnama" (marriage contract) favouring a rape accused against whom a chargesheet was filed in a local court, police said. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Umar Qadri (45). The woman named in the contract told them that she never married the accused Pervez Ali (28), who has been in jail since the last four months for raping her, a police official said. Police have examined the Nikahnama and found it to be fake, said district prosecution officer Mohammad Akram Sheikh. A chargesheet had already been filed against Ali in local court, he said. Qazi was remanded in police custody for one day, he said, adding that further investigation is underway.
Acid attack case: Madras HC rejects accused's contention on IPC penal provisions
The Madras High Court today declined to accept the arguments of an accused in a case of acid attack on a woman that her injuries were simple in nature and hence would not attract penal provisions of IPC section 326. Justice RMT Teekaa Raman partly allowed the appeal against a lower court order, modifying the sentence awarded under Indian Penal Code section 326 A (punishment for acid throwing) of 10 years to that of seven years under section 326 B (punishment for attempted acid throwing). The court rejected the contention of the counsel for the accused that penal provisions under IPC sections 326 A and B would not be attracted in the absence of any permanent disfigurement. It said criminal amendment Act, 326(A) and (B) came into force with effect from February 3, 2013 following the recommendations made by the Verma Committee to curb rampant acid attacks on women. Shiv Sena leader arrested for assault
A local Shiv Sena leader was arrested today in an assault case, police said today. Santosh Dhawale, Shiv Sena district contact chief, was arrested on a complaint lodged by a government official, they said. Dhawale's party has dismissed the charge against him and claimed he has been falsely implicated. The complaint was filed by Jagdish Gajanan Kadu (52), an inspector in the weight and measurement department. Kadu alleged that Dhawale, along with his associates, barged into his office and assaulted him without any provocation. The Sena leader snatched his mobile phone and broke his spectacles yesterday, Kadu said in the complaint. Islamabad HC adjourns hearing in cases against Sharif, Maryam, Safdar
A high court in Pakistan today adjourned till August 2 the hearing of appeals filed by jailed former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law against their conviction in a corruption case. Sharif, 68, his daughter Maryam, 44 and his son-in-law Capt (retd) Mohammed Safdar were convicted by a National Accountability Court on July 6 in the Avenfield corruption case and are currently in the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi. The jailed three-time prime minister has been shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) from the jail on July 29 after his condition deteriorated due to the heart ailment. They had filed appeals against their conviction in the Islamabad High Court (IHC). Sharif had also filed an application to transfer two other graft cases againt him to another anti-corruption court. Man arrested for 'killing' temple priest a year ago: Police
A man on the run after murdering a temple priest last year has been arrested, the police said today. The alleged killer was identified as Deepak, a resident of village Visnapur under Ekauna police station of Shravasti district in the state. Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said Deepak was arrested form Naya Ghaziabad railway station, minutes before he was to take a train to his native place. The police has been looking for him since April last year after the murder of a temple priest Sitaram Giri, said the SSP, adding that Deepak confessed to his his crime during interrogation. Deepak admitted that he along with one of his associates killed the priest of the temple located near Nasir Pur railway station to rob him of his cash, said the SSP adding that former SSP had also declared a reward of Rs 25,000 for his arrest.

Exhumation of bodies: SOG to probe case against Setalvad
The probe against activist Teesta Setalvad for alleged illegal exhumation of bodies of post-Godhra riot victims has been handed over to the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the city Crime Branch. Gujarat Director General of Police Shivanand Jha recently handed over the investigation to the SOG, said Assistant Commissioner of Police B C Solanki. Last year, the Supreme Court had refused to entertain Setalvad's plea seeking to quash the FIR registered against her by Lunawada police in Panchmahal district. The Gujarat High Court had rejected her similar plea in 2011. "Till now, all 11 accused named in the FIR lodged in January 2006 at Lunawada have been arrested and a charge sheet has been filed. Setalvad was shown as accused in the charge sheet, but due to the court matters (her applications in the court), she was never arrested," ACP Solanki said.
