A 25-year-old man was arrested today for allegedly killing his 20-year-old fiancee here on suspicion that she was in relationship with another man, the police said. The incident occurred at Oval Maidan in south Mumbai, when the accused Salman Shekh allegedly stabbed Nasrin Shekh, following an argument, a police official said. The deceased was working at a food joint in south Mumbai while the accused is a resident of Mumbra in neighbouring Thane district, he said. Police were alerted about a woman lying in an injured condition at the ground this morning, he said. A team of Azad Maidan Police rushed to the spot and found the woman unconscious with deep injuries on her stomach and other parts of the body, he said. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead before admission, he said. The police today arrested the main suspect in a case of alleged cow slaughter in Govindgarh in Alwar district. Shakil Qureshi (24) was the fourth person arrested in the case, Govindgarh station house officer Dara Singh said. His wife, mother and sister-in-law were arrested yesterday with about 40 kilos of meat, suspected to be beef. The police said they had raided a house after a tip off that a cow had been slaughtered and found the women packaging the meat. A veterinarian's report said the meat was beef and its samples were sent to forensic experts for further confirmation, police said.
A Nigerian judge today cleared over 80 Shiite supporters of a pro-Iranian cleric of criminal charges linked to a violent protest in 2015, defence and prosecution lawyers said. Justice David Shiri Wyom at the Kaduna State High Court ruled in favour of the defence's no case submission, saying that the state did not present enough evidence to go ahead with proceedings. Prosecutors had said the supporters of pro-Iranian cleric Ibrahim Zakzaky had conspired to attack the military convoy of army chief Tukur Buratai. Rajasthan Anti Corruption Bureau today arrested a deputy director of Women and Child Development department for allegedly misappropriating government funds and resorting to various irregularities in distribution of nutrition diet in Aaganwadis in Nagaur district in collusion with contractors involved in the job, an ACB official said. The ACB sleuths also recovered a sum of Rs 55,000, including Rs 40,000 of bribe money the deputy director Usha Rani Chaudhary had allegedly taken yesterday. In a raid on 11 locations in the Nagaur district, the ACB also detained three private contractors, the official said. An FIR was registered against a member of Nagar Panchayat (urban local body) in Deoria district for allegedly posting an objectionable photograph of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Twitter, police said. A qazi was arrested here today for allegedly preparing a fake "Nikahnama" (marriage contract) favouring a rape accused against whom a chargesheet was filed in a local court, police said. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Umar Qadri (45). The woman named in the contract told them that she never married the accused Pervez Ali (28), who has been in jail since the last four months for raping her, a police official said. Police have examined the Nikahnama and found it to be fake, said district prosecution officer Mohammad Akram Sheikh. A chargesheet had already been filed against Ali in local court, he said. Qazi was remanded in police custody for one day, he said, adding that further investigation is underway.
The Madras High Court today declined to accept the arguments of an accused in a case of acid attack on a woman that her injuries were simple in nature and hence would not attract penal provisions of IPC section 326. Justice RMT Teekaa Raman partly allowed the appeal against a lower court order, modifying the sentence awarded under Indian Penal Code section 326 A (punishment for acid throwing) of 10 years to that of seven years under section 326 B (punishment for attempted acid throwing). The court rejected the contention of the counsel for the accused that penal provisions under IPC sections 326 A and B would not be attracted in the absence of any permanent disfigurement. A high court in Pakistan today adjourned till August 2 the hearing of appeals filed by jailed former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law against their conviction in a corruption case. Sharif, 68, his daughter Maryam, 44 and his son-in-law Capt (retd) Mohammed Safdar were convicted by a National Accountability Court on July 6 in the Avenfield corruption case and are currently in the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi. The jailed three-time prime minister has been shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) from the jail on July 29 after his condition deteriorated due to the heart ailment. A man on the run after murdering a temple priest last year has been arrested, the police said today. The alleged killer was identified as Deepak, a resident of village Visnapur under Ekauna police station of Shravasti district in the state. Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said Deepak was arrested form Naya Ghaziabad railway station, minutes before he was to take a train to his native place. The police has been looking for him since April last year after the murder of a temple priest Sitaram Giri, said the SSP, adding that Deepak confessed to his his crime during interrogation.
