A rights lawyer says an Egyptian military court has sentenced a poet to three years in prison for insulting the country's security forces. The lawyer, Mokhtar Mounir, said today that Galal el-Beheiri was also convicted of "disseminating false news." The verdict can be appealed. El-Beheiri was arrested in March after he wrote a collection of poems entitled "The Best Women on Earth," a play on a saying attributed to the Prophet Muhammad that Egypt was the birthplace of "the best soldiers on earth." In recent years, authorities have detained journalists, novelists, playwrights and stage actors on charges that include contempt of religion, harming national security, inciting strife or breaching morality. Their arrest is part of an ongoing crackdown on dissent that has seen thousands jailed.
A 45-year-old sub-inspector was arrested last night for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl in Rewa district over the last several months, police said today. The accused Mahendra Mishra was the incharge of Mauganj police station, about 60 kms from here. Quoting the complaint, Additional Superintendent of Police Shivkumar Singh said Mishra was allegedly raping the girl since past several months by locking her parents in a room in her house in Rewa. "On July 27, Mishra allegedly called the girl to Mauganj under the pretext of marriage and arranged her stay in a local lodge, where he raped her again," the ASP said. The girl arrived in Mauganj police station last night and created ruckus, following which senior police officers were informed, the police said. Mishra was booked under section 376 (2) (raping a woman taking advantage of official position) of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the ASP said. Twelve children were shifted out of the ICU at a government hospital here after a bottle of a disinfectant broke, letting off a pungent gas which triggered uneasiness among the kids, officials said. An infant died admitted at the paediatric ICU at MDM hospital died around the time this happened, leading to allegations that the gas was the cause. Hospital Superintendent Mahendra Kumar Aseri, however, denied that the death was linked to the formalin leak. He said formalin leaked from the bottle after being dropped between 1.30 am-2 am and a pungent smelling gas was leaked when they tried to clean the spill with water. "The gas caused uneasiness among the children in the ward," Aseri said. He said that as soon as the incident occurred, the 12 children were shifted to an adjacent ICU ward. Opposed to her love marriage, family members of a tribal woman allegedly assaulted her and her husband and forced them to drink urine, the district police today said. The incident took place at Hardaspur village, 25 km from the Alirajpur district headquarters, on July 25. Ambua Police Station in-charge Vikas Kapis said the 19-year-old woman married a 21-year-old man from the same village against her parents' wishes in May this year. Later, the 'jaat panchayat' (community body) intervened and ordered that the man's family should pay Rs 70,000 to the woman's family as compensation and resolve the issue, Kapis said. The couple then left for Gujarat in search of job. When they returned last week, the couple stayed at the house of the husband's uncle. An eight-year-old rape survivor, whose case had shocked the state last month, recognised today both the accused in the court in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district. The girl identified the accused Irfan alias Bhaiyu (20) and Asif (24) before special judge Nisha Gupta, prosecution officer B S Thakur said. The rape survivor had earlier identified the duo from their photographs during the police investigation, he said. Thakur said the girl today first identified Irfan, and then told the court that the second accused (Arif) had reached the crime spot two minutes after him. A court here has ordered prosecution of six persons, including the authorities of a south Delhi-based private school where a six-year-old boy was found dead in a water reservoir in 2006, for the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Devansh Kakrora, a student of class I, was found dead in January, 2016 in the reservoir under the amphitheatre of Ryan International School in South Delhi. The initial post-mortem report had suggested he died of drowning. The court said that prima facie there were ingredients available for constitution of the offence under section 304 part II of IPC, (if act is done with knowledge that it is likely to cause death, but without any intention to cause death). The Delhi High Court on Tuesday constituted a five-member committee to examine the punishment and death sentencing awarded in the sexual harassment cases.The court was hearing a plea challenging the Criminal Law (Amendment), 2018 bill that proposes stringent punishment for raping a child under 12 years of age. An 11-year-old girl died and a seven-year-old boy is critical after they fell in a pond connected to the Yamuna river, which is flowing above the danger mark, police said. Asha and Raja, residents of Bela Gaon, were playing in front of their residence in central Delhi when the incident occurred. The children were rescued by locals and taken to LNJP Hospital where the girl was declared brought dead while the boy undergoing treatment, they said, adding his condition was stated to be critical.
