The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (NSCB) International Airport here has seized USD 1,55,000 valued at Rs 1,05,40,000 concealed in cardboard boxes, from two passengers, the Commissioner of Customs (Airport) said today. The seizure was made at around 11 pm yesterday and the two passengers were arrested soon after it, a release by the airport said. The two men were scheduled to depart for Bangkok by a Bhutan Airlines flight, it said. Six cardboard boxes had been carried in by the men as checked-in baggage. Their response that they were carrying biscuits intrigued the AIU sleuths. On examination, the US dollars were found packed in the boxes, AIU sources said. It is being suspected that the two men were couriers and the money was being taken as part of a hawala racket, they said. A special POCSO court here today convicted a 35-year-old man for raping a minor girl in 2014 in the metropolis' Sion area and the prosecution sought the death penalty as he was a repeat offender with 11 similar cases registered against his name. Ayyas Ansari was convicted by Additional Sessions Judge M A Baraliya for the offences under Section 376 (rape) 377 (unnatural offences) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code as well as relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. Saudi Arabia today executed seven people convicted of criminal offenses, including five men for the robbery and murder of a Pakistani warehouse guard in the western city of Jiddah. The Interior Ministry said the five men, two Saudis and three Chad nationals, stabbed and beat the guard and stole his mobile phone as part of a robbery of the warehouse. It was not clear when they committed the crime and how they were executed, but Saudi Arabia usually carries out death sentences with beheadings by sword or firing squad. In the northern city of Tabuk, a Lebanese man was executed after being convicted of drug smuggling and a Saudi man was put to death after being convicted of the murder of another Saudi, the ministry said. The kingdom has executed 66 people so far in 2018. In 2017, 122 people were executed and 144 people were executed in 2016.
Banks and financial institutions (FIs), which have lent money to Jaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL), today urged the Supreme Court that the assets of holding firm JAL should not used for refunding money to home buyers of its subsidiary firm Jaypee Infratech Ltd (JIL). JAL, which has already deposited Rs 750 crore with the apex court registry, had told the bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra that it was willing to deposit Rs 600 crore more to refund money to the home buyers if it was allowed to dispose of its identified assets, including a cement plant at Rewa in Madhya Pradesh. Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for the consortium of banks and FIs led by ICICI Bank, said while JAL has moved the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Allahabad with its restructuring plan. The Income Tax department has directed its field offices to withdraw by August 20 the appeals pending before tribunals and courts that exceed the fixed monetary threshold. In a circular issued today, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said that the pending appeals or special leave petitions (SLPs) should be withdrawn "on priority" to enable the department to focus on high value litigations. In order to reduce litigation, the government had, last week, hiked the threshold limit for filing appeals in tribunals to Rs 20 lakh, while the same for high courts and the Supreme Court has been raised to Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore, respectively. The earlier threshold for filing such appeals by the tax department in Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT)/Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) was Rs 10 lakh, while the same in high courts and Supreme Court was Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh respectively. A city-based builder has been arrested for failing to hand over possession of a flat to a buyer, a senior police official said today. Niranjan Vaid was arrested on Sunday and produced yesterday in a local court which granted him bail, he said. He was booked under IPC sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property) as well as relevant sections of the Maharashtra Ownership Flat Act on a complaint filed by the flat buyer, the official said. As per the complainant, a resident of suburban Bhandup, he had bought a flat from the developer, but the realtor failed to transfer the ownership of the same to him even after seven years, he added.

A police complaint was today filed against the elite Delhi Golf Club by the Delhi Government for allegedly felling over 100 trees illegally on its premises. According to an official statement, the complaint has been filed with Hazrat Nizamuddin Police Station on the basis of an inspection report of Forest Department officials who visited the spot thrice last week after an existing member alleged that the club fell over 100 trees without permission from authorities. The inspection report confirmed that pits were being dug and logs of several sizes were being dumped there. Four persons were sentenced to death, three of them in absentia, by a tribunal in Bangladesh today for committing crimes against humanity during the country's 1971 Liberation War against Pakistan.
