: Cannabis weighing 1,113 kg worth Rs 1.67 crore was seized today in Visakapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh and two people arrested in this connection, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials said. Acting on a tip-off that prohibited narcotic drugs were being illegally transported, sleuths launched an operation and intercepted a carriage vehicle in Visakhapatnam district yesterday and found 48 bags concealed under seven tonnes of wooden logs, DRI (Hyderabad Zonal Unit) Additional Director General M K Singh said in a release here. "On opening the 48 bags, a total of 528 brown packets totally weighing 1,113 kg of cannabis (also known as ganja) were found," he said. The contraband is suspected to have been procured from Vishakapatnam agency area and was to be sent to Zaheerabad town in Telangana. The value of the narcotic drug, seized under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, in the grey market would be around Rs 1.67 crore,
A boy was beaten up by a girl in Rajasthan's Bharatpur city for reportedly defaming her, a video of which has gone viral on social media. The video shows the girl, who seems to be an athlete, confronting the accused and later beating him black and blue with a stick. Main yaha mehnat karne aati hu aur tu mere naam kharab karega (loosely translates to 'I come here to work hard and you are defaming me'), the girl can be seen shouting at the boy in the video. He is spreading rumours among his friends that this girl is his girlfriend and talks to him 4-5 times a day, she said to the onlookers and later slapped the boy. SP Bharatpur, Anil Tank, however, said no complaint has been lodged in connection with the matter. The girl has not lodged any complaint in the matter which happened four to five days back, he said. Jailed former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law today filed separate appeals in the Islamabad High Court against the verdict in a corruption case and sought their release on bail, according to media reports. Sharif, 68, and his daughter Maryam, 44, were arrested in Lahore on Friday on their arrival from London after an accountability court found them guilty over his family's ownership of four luxury flats in London. Seven separate appeals were filed by the three convicts' lawyers - three on behalf of Sharif, and two each on behalf of Maryam and Safdar - pertaining to the corruption cases against them, Dawn News reported. The appeal highlighted the legal flaws in the Avenfield verdict and pleaded to nullify the Islamabad Accountability Court's verdict. Two of the five people accused of burning a woman alive after raping her in Rajpura area of Sambhal district have been arrested, the police said today. The woman was allegedly burnt alive inside a temple premises after she was raped by the five people in her house on Saturday. The CBI has taken the custody of journalist Upendra Rai in connection with a fresh case of alleged extortion and corruption, an official said. The case, registered on May 5, in which he has been arrested recently, pertains to alleged extortion of Rs 15 crore from a builder in Mumbai. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said one of the directors of Mumbai-based White Lion Real Estate Developers Pvt Ltd, Balvinder Singh Malhotra, had filed a complaint with it against Rai. The journalist was earlier arrested by the agency for allegedly getting an airport access pass using links with an aviation company in violation of rules. Later, the Enforcement Directorate had also registered cases against him and arrested him. Rai would be produced before a special CBI court today as his police remand comes to an end, an official said.
