The Supreme Court will hear tomorrow the anticipatory bail plea of Father Soni Abraham Varghese in connection with the sex scandal case involving four clergymen attached to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Kerala. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud agreed to hear the plea of the priest after he sought urgent hearing as he fears arrest in the case. The crime branch had on July 2 registered a case against Father Varghese and three other priests on the basis of statements given by a woman belonging to the same Church accusing them of sexually assaulting her on many occasions. The high court had earlier dismissed his plea and ordered him to surrender forthwith. The woman has alleged that all the four priests had misused her confessions to sexually exploit her. The probe agency has already arrested two of the accused.
A 30-year-old activist of a political party has been arrested for allegedly issuing threats to an NCP MLA on a social networking site, the police said today. The accused, Mirza Rehan Azmi, allegedly posted an objectionable message yesterday on his Facebook page against Jitendra Awhad, the MLA from the Kalwa-Mumbra constituency in Thane district, and threatened to harm him, police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. An office-bearer of the NCP women's wing filed a complaint with the Mumbra police against two persons in this connection, she said. Based on the complaint, the police last night arrested Azmi, who is an activist of a political party, and launched a search for the other person named in the complaint, she said. The accused has been booked under IPC sections pertaining to defamation and criminal intimidation and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, Narkar said.

In a recent development in the alleged gang rape of NGO workers in Jharkhand's Khunti district, the police have arrested another man, who had a bounty of Rs 50,000 on his head.The accused, named Baji Samad, was arrested from a village in West Singhbhum district on Saturday, Superintendent of Police, Kranti Kumar said.After getting information that Baji Samad was seen near Banasai village, a joint team of CRPF personnel and policemen was formed. They later conducted a raid and arrested the accused, who later confessed to his involvement in the incident during interrogation."We have arrested one more accused in the case. He had a bounty of Rs 50,000 on his head. The police here stopped a child marriage two days before the wedding after receiving a complaint in this regard, the police said here today. The wedding was fixed for tomorrow. On receiving the complaint, police officials reached the venue yesterday and found that the girl was 16 years of age, SHO of Jansath Police Station said. The police asked the family not go ahead with the wedding, following which the girl's parents decided to postpone the wedding till she becomes an adult, the officer said.
Eight members of a family, including two children, were admitted to a hospital for suspected food poisoning at a village in Shamli district, the police said today. After drinking cold drinks from a local shop, they complained of headache, vomiting and stomach disorder following which they were shifted to district hospital, the SHO of Kairana Police Station said. A Massachusetts police officer and bystander died from wounds sustained when a suspect allegedly took the officer's gun and fired following a vehicle crash and a foot chase. Weymouth officer Michael Chesna was shot multiple times by his own firearm around 7:30 a.m. yesterday, and died from the injuries at South Shore Hospital, officials said. An unidentified elderly woman also died after being hit by stray bullets in a nearby home, authorities said. Weymouth is located approximately 16 miles (26 kilometers) south of Boston on what is known as the South Shore. A female flight attendant allegedly committed suicide after jumping from the terrace of her residence in south Delhi's Hauz Khas, police said today. Anisiya Batra was in her 40s and worked with a German airline. She allegedly jumped from the terrace of her house on Friday, they said. Her husband rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Her family alleged that she was harassed for dowry. The woman had been married for over two years and used to live with her husband in Hauz Khas. Before jumping off the terrace, Anisiya had sent a message to her husband that she would kill herself, police said. Her husband, a software engineer in Gurgaon, told police that they had regular fights as there were "compatibility issues". The had an argument on Friday as well, following which Anisiya jumped from the terrace, police said. Police have registered a case and are questioning the husband and his family members.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Haryana Police has arrested a wanted criminal carrying a reward of Rs 1.5 lakh on him, police said today. Pradeep Lohar alias Kala, a resident of Badala in Hisar was involved in as many as 24 cases of murder, dacoity and loot. Absconding since 2017, he was arrested from Uttar Pradesh, they said. Acting on a tip off that Lohar was roaming in Noida's sector 23 with the intention to commit a crime, an STF team reached the spot and nabbed the criminal who was also wanted in Delhi, they added. According to police, Lohar had killed his accomplice Pradeep Jamwadi and his mother after a case was registered against him at police stationCivil Lines in Hisar. He also used Facebook as a tool to spread fear among people, police said, adding that they would seek his remand from the court. Surat police today said the woman who had lodged a rape case against former BJP MLA Jayanti Bhanushali, which led to his ouster from the party, was untraceable. The 21-year-old victim, a resident of Surat, had written to the police on July 10 seeking registration of a rape case against the BJP MLA who represented the Abdasa constituency between 2007 and 2012. Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said the woman had failed to appear before the police despite being issued summons. "We had tried to contact the complainant and sent her summons on the address given in the letter received in order to record her statement," Sharma said. A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in west Delhi's Tilak Vihar police post since she was afraid of her family members who were against her friendship with a 21-year-old man, a police official said today. The family was allegedly unhappy about her relationship with a person in the neighbourhood, he said. Yesterday, the girl's brother returned home and on not finding her there, he went to the man's house and accused his family of hiding the teenager, the official said. A quarrel began between the families and both the parties informed police. After the sleuths arrived, six to seven people were taken to a hospital while the two families were taken to the police post, the official said. A look out circular (LOC) has been issued against a former SSP (Vigilance) for allegedly implicating a 'patwari' (revenue official) in a false graft case. Inspector General (Ferozepur range) Gurinder Singh Dhillon, who was tasked to probe the case, said the LOC was issued against Shiv Kumar Sharma by a special investigation team (SIT). Sharma, along with other Vigilance Bureau officials, was earlier booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and an SIT formed to probe the charges. In 2009, Shiv Kumar Sharma, then SSP (Vigilance Bureau) Patiala, had asked land revenue official Mohan Singh to furnish records related to his land in Fatehargh Sahib's Rurki village.
