Another don fears for his safety in UP jail

Days after the killing of gangster Munna Bajrangi in Baghpat jail, the family of another jailed don Mukhtar Ansari has expressed concern over his safety. The don-turned politician's brother Afzal Ansari said he has "virtually no expectation" from the government, suggesting there was no point in demanding more security for Mukhtar Ansari. Nitish govt to thin down tough anti-liquor law in Bihar

A first time offender under Bihar's anti-liquor law will be able to walk free after paying a fine instead of undergoing a five-year jail term, the state's top law officer said today, a day after the Nitish Kumar government approved amendments to dilute its provisions. Such an offender will have to pay a fine of Rs 50,000, state Advocate General Lalit Kishore said, giving details about the proposed measures. The government will table the amendments to the stringent Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016 in the state legislature during the Monsoon Session scheduled later this month. The nod to the proposed amendments was given at a meeting of the state Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar late last evening. For failure to pay the fine, the offender, convicted for consuming liquor, will have to undergo three months jail term but for a second offence the prison term will be five years under the proposed measures, Kishore said. Sohrabuddin-Prajapati case: FSL official deposes in court

A special CBI court here today recorded the testimony of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) officer who had examined the spot where Tulsiram Prajapati was killed in an alleged fake encounter in December 2006. Gulam Sheikh, the then in charge of FSL mobile van unit, Palanpur (Gujarat) today deposed as prosecution witness before special CBI judge S J Sharma. Sheikh stood by his earlier statement given to the CBI. He told court that the function of his unit was to visit the crime scene and guide the investigating officer in collection and preservation of evidence. According to the CBI, Sheikh said he had received a call on his mobile phone from Ambaji police station on the morning of December 28, 2006 and was asked to reach Ambaji for collection of evidence in a police firing case. Accordingly, he called the driver of the FSL mobile van, Bhirajibhai, to his residence. The duo then proceeded to Ambaji police station and reached there at around 10:30 AM. Delhi govt reinstates lawyers panels scrapped by LG

The Delhi government today reinstated its panels of lawyers in the Supreme Court and High Court that were scrapped by Lt Governor Anil Baijal, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said here, days after the apex court clipped the power of the lieutenant governor. "LG had cancelled Del govt's panels of advocates in HC and SC due to which Del govt's cases in these courts were suffering. Today, Del govt restored both panels (sic)," Kejriwal tweeted. The panel for the high court included prominent lawyers like Indira Jaising, Rebecca Mammen John, Colin Gonsalves, among others. A government official said that the fees of lawyers' were stuck after the panels were scrapped and the payments will be released now. Trial court made 'erroneous' observations in Vanzara's discharge in Sohrabuddin case: HC

The Bombay High Court today remarked that prima facie the trial court, in its order granting discharge to Gujarat ATS chief D G Vanzara last year in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh encounter case, had made some "erroneous" observations. The remarks were made by Justice A M Badar, who is hearing a bunch of revision applications challenging the discharge granted by the trial court to several senior IPS officers of Gujarat and Rajasthan police, including Vanzara. The police officials have been charged by the Gujarat CID and CBI for the "fake" encounters of Shaikh, his wife Kausar Bi and their aide Tulsiram Prajapati. Justice Badar made the remark after the lawyer for Shaikh's brother Rubabuddin argued that the special court's order granting discharge to Vanzara was erroneous. Junior clerk arrested for taking bribe

A junior clerk was today arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs 74,000 here, an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said. Posted at Rajasthan Khadi Gramodhyog Board, Chandradas Vaishnav had demanded the money to pass a loan of Rs 25 lakh for setting up a stone crushing factory, police said. Complainant Shivram Dangi had approached the ACB saying that he had applied for a loan to set up the factory but the accused demanded money to pass the loan, SHO ACB Hanuwant Singh said. The complaint was verified and the accused was arrested red-handed accepting Rs 20,000 in cash and a cheque of Rs 54,000, Singh added. Search operations were conducted at the accused's home and office while his deposits in bank accounts and lockers were also being probed, he added.

NCLAT rejects Liberty House plea to stay resolution process of Bhushan Power

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) today turned down the plea of UK-based Liberty House to stay the resolution process of Bhushan Power and Steel. A two-member bench of the appellate tribunal, headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya, directed the committee of creditors (CoC) to go ahead with the resolution process. During the proceedings of the tribunal, counsel appearing for Liberty House said that they were not getting information regarding finalisation of the bids and requested the appellate tribunal to halt it. However, the tribunal did not agree and asked the CoC to proceed with the resolution plans submitted before it. "The CoC (committee of creditors) has the option to pass appropriate orders with respect to resolution applicants and place the same before the adjudicating authority (NCLT)," the tribunal said. SBEC Sugar settles delayed disclosure compliance case with Sebi

Markets regulator Sebi today settled a case related to alleged delay in disclosure compliance by SBEC Sugar Ltd after it paid Rs 9.5 lakh towards settlement charges. The regulator agreed to settle the proposed adjudication proceedings after it was approached by SBEC Sugar with a plea under the settlement regulations. Under the settlement norms, an entity is allowed to settle charges by paying a penalty without admission or denial of guilt. It was alleged that company had violated PIT (Prohibition of Insider Trading) norms by delaying the disclosure of change in shareholding of promoters in Moderate Leasing and Capital Services Ltd, A to Z Holding Pvt Ltd and other entities. During the proceedings, the company had approached Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to settle the case on payment of settlement charges. Main accused in Thai woman cheating case to be subjected to

The main accused in the alleged rape and cheating of a Thai woman will soon be subject to a DNA test, police said today. Manoj Jain will soon be summoned by a court for this purpose, even as blood samples of the woman and daughter have been taken, they said. The case refers to the 42-year-old Jain allegedly cheating the Thai woman, who had complained that he had fathered two children with her after promising to marry her. According to a complaint by the woman sent to the City Police Commissionerate through a consular communication, Jain had raped her after spiking her cold drink, a city police release said. Self-styled godman arrested for kidnapping minor girl: Police

A self-styled godman was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a minor girl in Rajasthan's Jalore district, the police said today. The girl was found and produced today before the Jodhpur High Court, which, after hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by the victim's family, handed her over to them. A habeas corpus plea is a petition which is filed to ensure a person under arrest is brought before a court which will determine whether the detention is legal. The accused 'godman' Mohanram alias Mohan Bhagat had allegedly kidnapped a 17-year-old girl in Sedwa village of Barmer on May 26, following which the family members had lodged a complaint. Pakistan to file counter-memorial on Jadhav's case in ICJ on Jul 17

Pakistan will file its second written reply to India on July 17 in the ICJ on the conviction of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav who was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism, the Foreign Office said today. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on January 23 gave a timeline to both Pakistan and India for filing another round of memorials in the case. Pakistan's counter-memorial will be in response to pleadings filed by India in the Hague-based ICJ on April 17, Foreign Office Spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal told reporters at his weekly press briefing. Nun abuse case: Jalandhar diocese Bishop claims innocence

Smuggled gold bars worth Rs 5.50 cr seized in TN, three held

Gold bars weighing around 18 kg, smuggled into the country from Sri Lanka, were seized in Pudukottai district and three persons arrested in this connection, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials said today. Acting on a tip off, DRI sleuths intercepted a car proceeding to Chennai yesterday and recovered the 17.83 kgs of gold bars from it and arrested two persons,a release from DRI said. During interrogation, the accused confessed that the gold was being smuggled from Sri Lanka and they were transporting it to a recipient in Chennai "for a monetary consideration." Defamation case: Jagdish Tytler withdraws plea in HC

Congress leader Jagdish Tytler today withdrew from the Delhi High Court his plea challenging framing of charges against him in a defamation case filed by a senior advocate representing the victims in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases as the trial has already begun in the lower court. Justice R K Gauba allowed the request of Tytler's counsel to withdraw the plea after he said he does not wish to press it as he would contest the matter in the trial court. The defamation case filed against the Congress leader by senior advocate H S Phoolka is pending before a trial court which had on March 2, 2015 framed charges against Tytler saying he had prime facie defamed the lawyer by allegedly making imputations to harm his reputation. Yogendra Yadav family: IT dept seizes Rs 27 L; cash transactions receipts of about Rs 15 Cr

The Income Tax Department (ITD) today said it has seized about Rs 27 lakh cash and a number of documents and payment receipts after it raided multiple premises of a hospital group in Haryana's Rewari, related to family of Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yadav. A senior ITD official said that the department also recovered transaction receipts of about Rs 15 crore, suspected to be unaccounted, after the raids on the offices of the hospital group. The raids have ended now. Department officials in Chandigarh also claimed to have found alleged documents related to the purchase of a land plot by the owners of the hospital group in the past, using a purported cash amount of Rs 93 lakh. This transaction is under investigation now, they said. About Rs 29 lakh cash was found as part of the raids that were launched yesterday morning.
