One of the three Malankara Syrian Orthodox priests, accused of sexually abusing a woman, today surrendered before the police here. Father Job Mathew, the second accused in the case, surrendered before the Crime Branch office here and is being questioned, police sources said. Lanka to hang 19 drug convicts

Sri Lanka will carry out the death sentence for 19 convicts over serious drug offences, the government said today, a day after the country decided to reinstate capital punishment for drug-related crimes. Cabinet approval had been obtained to implement the death penalty on repeat offenders related to large scale drug offenses," said Cabinet spokesman and minister Rajitha Senaratne. He said President Maithripala Sirisena will sign the documents to implement the death penalty. This was following yesterday's unanimous Cabinet decision to reinstate capital punishment for drug-related crimes. The Cabinet decision came despite Sri Lanka voting in favour of a UN moratorium on the death penalty. Although capital punishment is in the statute of Sri Lanka, the country had stopped hangings since 1976 and death row prisoners spend life terms in jail. Executions have not been carried out as successive presidents since 1978 have refused to issue death warrants.

Damaging Sandpiper eggs: Minor rescued from falling prey to community superstition

A five-year-girl was rescued from becoming the victim of superstition by the authorities in the neighbouring Bundi district, an official said. The child had accidentally destroyed the eggs of the sand piper bird in her school premises on July 2. According to the local beliefs, the bird is believed to be the messenger of rain and harming it or its eggs entails punishment. The child's accidental damaging of the eggs led to the gathering of village elders who concluded that declaring her an outcast and disallowing her from entering her home for three days would be punishment commensurate to the sin. The class one student was, however, allowed to stay in the front yard of her house. The girl's father could not tolerate the diktat and protested, an official said. The ruckus created by him led to a result contrary to his expectations as the community 'panches' extended the girl's punishment duration to eleven days. The matter came to the notice of local authorities and Hindoli Tehsildar ...
