Former Malaysian leader Najib grilled by anti-graft agency

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was grilled for more than four hours today over a corruption scandal that could lead to criminal charges against him, while the country's new anti-graft chief said investigations into the case were suppressed by intimidation during Najib's rule. Najib was summoned by Malaysia's Anti-Corruption Commission nearly two weeks after the defeat of his long-ruling coalition in national elections amid public anger over alleged graft at the 1MDB state investment fund that Najib set up. The Haryana Police today arrested a wanted criminal carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, a police spokesperson said. SC grants relief from arrest to BJP leader S Ve Shekher

The Supreme Court today granted interim protection from arrest till June 1 to actor-turned-BJP leader S Ve Shekher, against whom a case was lodged for sharing a Facebook post allegedly containing derogatory references to women scribes and the media. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Navin Sinha also issued notice to Tamil Nadu seeking its reply on the plea filed by Shekher, who has challenged the May 10 order of Madras High Court dismissing his petition seeking anticipatory bail in the case. The bench, while posting the matter for further hearing on June 1, said no coercive action should be taken against Shekhar till then. SC to hear plea challenging NGT order on PVC pipes containing lead

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear a plea challenging a National Green Tribunal order staying its direction to publish a warning on Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes containing lead that it has hazardous effect on human health. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Navin Sinha said it would hear on May 25 the plea filed by lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking setting aside of the NGT's May 2 order. The green panel on May 25 last year had directed the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to lay down standards within four months for using lead in PVC pipes, in consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards after it was informed that water passing through such pipes commonly used in most buildings may contain toxic materials like lead. JK vigilance files charge sheet agnst handloom develop corp officials

The Jammu and Kashmir State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) today filed a charge sheet against four officials of the Handloom Development Corporation in Samba district for allegedly causing loss to the exchequer by selling scrap at lowest rates. The charge sheet was filed in an anti-corruption court after necessary sanction was obtained from the competent authority for launching prosecution against the accused public servants, a spokesman of the SVO said. HC seeks Centre, BCI reply on ABVP, law students plea agst CLAT-2018

The Delhi High Court today sought response of the Centre and the BCI on a plea by the ABVP and two law students challenging the "inconsistently and negligently" conducted Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) held recently. Justice Rekha Palli issued notice to the ministries of law and justice and human resources development, Bar Council of India, CLAT working committee and implementation committee and the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS). Senior advocate Chetan Sharma, appearing for the petitioners, sought quashing of the CLAT-2018, contending that there were mismanagement and incompetency of the national law universities in conducting the examination on a rotational basis. Debt-ridden businessman kills wife, two daughters in Guj

A debt-ridden businessman allegedly shot dead his wife and two daughters at his residence here in the early hours today, a police official said. The family members apparently had an argument over sending one of the daughters abroad for higher studies following which the incident took place, he said. Dharmesh Shah, 50, who runs a construction business, first killed his wife Amiben using his licensed pistol at their flat in 'Ratnam Tower' building in the posh Judges Bungalow area. US Supreme Court accepts appeal to hear dispute over power plant in Gujarat

The US Supreme Court has accepted an appeal against an International Finance Corporation-funded power plant in Gujarat by villagers who claim that it caused devastation of the local environment. DV case: Court denies maintenance to wife for lying about job

A Delhi court has taken away from a woman the maintenance amount of Rs 15,000 per month awarded to her by her estranged husband after finding that she had "mischievously concealed" her job as a government school teacher and claimed to be unemployed. Special Judge Virender Bhat rejected the appeal of the woman seeking enhancement of the maintenance amount and allowed the man's appeal to set aside the magisterial court's 2009 order by which she was given the monetary relief. "It needs to be noted here that the woman has very conveniently and mischievously concealed and withheld from the trial court the factum of her employment as government teacher..." the judge said. Dalit beating incident: NHRC sends notice to Guj govt

The NHRC has sent a notice to the Gujarat government over the incident in which a Dalit man was allegedly beaten to death in a factory compound near Rajkot district's Shapar town by five people, and sought a report on it within four weeks. Mukesh Vaniya, the 35-year-old Dalit ragpicker, was lynched and his wife Jayaben Vaniya was roughed up on May 20, officials said. He was allegedly beaten to death in the factory compound by five people, including the factory owner, who suspected that he and his wife were stealing scrap, they said. 11-year-old beaten up for complaining about school meal, hospitalised

An 11-year-old boy was hospitalised here after his principal allegedly beat him up with an iron rod when he complained about the quality of the mid-day meal, police said today. The victim, Rahul, is a student of Class V at Government Primary School in Dehradun district's Old Dalanwala area. Yesterday, Rahul complained to the school principal, Nasrin Bano, about the quality of food being served in the mid-day meal. CHC official arrested for taking bribe

A block accounts manager was arrested by vigilance sleuths in Odisha's Nayagarh district for allegedly accepting Rs 10,000 bribe from a health worker, a vigilance release said. Pradeep Kumar Acharya, block accounts manager of the community health centre at Madhyakhanda, was caught while accepting Rs 10,000 from Sanjib Kumar Panda, a health worker yesterday. Acharya had allegedly asked Panda to make false bills on payments to volunteers to collect blood samples and supply of mosquito nets in the Chadheyapalli sub-centre area. As Panda did not act as Acharya wanted, he did not accept the bills and the bribe was demanded for their clearance. Panda complained to the vigilance department who laid a trap and Acharya was caught red handed in his office room at Madhyakhanda. Acharya's residential house at Nayagarh was searched, it said.
