Authorities investigating US man for misconduct in plane
Denver-based Frontier Airlines confirmed that it is investigating the conduct of a male passenger who allegedly touched two women in an unwelcome manner and urinated inside the plane cabin during a flight last week.
Five highway robbers held
Five members of an inter-state gang of highway robbers were arrested in Ganjam district today, the police said. The five were arrested from the Badaghati forest along NH-16 on Sunday and two bombs, sharp weapons, some explosive materials, iron rods, five mobile phone sets and Rs 10,000 and a car were recovered from them, they said. Police is searching for other members of the gang and investigating their involvement in crimes in Odisha and outside, he said.
A huge cache of arms and ammunition recovered in Manipur
A large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered by Assam Rifles (AR) today while those were being transported in a vehicle from Ukhrul to Imphal in Manipur, an AR release said. The seized items included two GSG-5 German rifles with four magazines, one Uzkon semi-automatic shot gun with three magazines, two 9 mm Beretta pistols with four magazines, one 9 mm Sigsauer pistol with two magazines, detonators and more than 6000 rounds of ammunition of various kinds. This recovery is a major success on the part of Assam Rifles to thwart nefarious designs of the underground groups, it said.
Body of kidnapped man found
The body of a man, who was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified men from his house in West Garo Hills district on May 19, has been recovered from a spot about a kilometer from his residence, police said today. The incident occurred at Sakaboldakgre village under Dadenggre police limits in Meghalaya. Some locals alleged that the victim was suspected of practising witchcraft, which may have led to personal enmity. "We are looking at all angles and will know what happened after we receive the post mortem report. Prima facie, it seems to be a case of murder," superintendent of police Dr MGR Kumar said. An FIR lodged at the police station by two villagers on May 20 said that at around 10 pm on May 19, two people with their faces covered, had barged into the bedroom of the victim, identified as Nangseng Ch Marak (60), and dragged him out of his bed. Olympian sues USA Swimming alleging sex abuse cover-up
Former Olympian Ariana Kukors Smith filed a lawsuit against USA Swimming, accusing the governing body of knowing she was being sexually abused by her coach and covering it up. Kukors Smith alleged in the lawsuit, filed in Orange County Superior Court near Los Angeles, that Sean Hutchison, her coach at a swim club near Seattle, began grooming her for a sexual relationship at age 13, touching and kissing her when she was 16 and having sex with her when she was 17. "USA Swimming officials secretly agreed Hutchison should be specifically protected from the background check process due to the fact that pervasive rumors of his inappropriate sexually motivated behavior toward minors such as the plaintiff would inevitably surface through contacts with prior employers," Kukors Smith said in the filing. US Supreme Court to hear dispute over power plant in Gujarat
The US Supreme Court has agreed to take up an appeal by Indian villagers against a power plant in Gujarat, funded by US-based International Finance Corporation (IFC), which has allegedly resulted in environmental damages. "Petition granted", the Supreme Court said yesterday. The case would come up for hearing in the next session, beginning October. A US Navy veteran, who is serving life in prison for killing Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla and injuring two others at a suburban Kansas City bar last year, today pleaded guilty to hate crime and firearm charges. Adam Purinton admitted that he fatally shot Kuchibhotla in February 2017 after confronting him and another man Alok Madasani from India at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe. UK court drops charges against Barclays over Qatar funding
A British court has dropped criminal charges against Barclays over its emergency fundraising from Qatar during the financial crisis a decade ago, the lender said today. The Serious Fraud Office had sought to prosecute Barclays for allegedly conspiring to commit fraud by false representations in services agreements with Qatar Holding in 2008. There was also one alleged offence of unlawful financial assistance over a USD 3.0-billion (2.5-billion-euro) loan provided by Barclays to the State of Qatar in the same year. Delhi industrialist shot dead in Ghaziabad
Two motorcycle-borne assailants shot dead a Delhi-based industrialist in Rajendra Nagar area of Sahibabad this evening, a police official said. Anil Kheda, 60, was shot just before he was to enter his car, Deputy Superintendent of Police (CO Border) Rakesh Mishra said. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Mishra said Kheda was visiting Rajendra Nagar industrial area for a meeting in connection with his chemical business. An investigation is underway, the official said.
Police deny allegation of parading man naked in west Delhi
After a video emerged of a man, not wearing any clothes, being taken into custody by the Delhi Police at Inderpuri in the western parts of the city, locals have alleged that he was paraded naked in the area. However, the police have denied the allegation. According to the police, the man was wearing only a towel when they had gone to arrest him. "The police team had gone to his house. There was a non-bailable warrant against him. He was wanted in three armed robbery cases," Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Kumar said. One person was today arrested for allegedly making sexual gestures to a woman shopkeeper in Basdroni area here, police said. The accused, a youth in his early 20s, entered the shop in Basdroni's Central Park area yesterday afternoon, when the woman shopkeeper was alone, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said. "Initially, he started asking about prices of different items and suddenly started making sexual gestures seeing the woman alone. The woman filmed the entire act on her mobile phone," the officer said. Police today nabbed the accused from his residence in Sonarpur after going through the video footage provided by the woman. The Ahmedabad crime branch today opposed an anticipatory bail plea of social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand at a sessions court in the Rs 1.4 crore alleged fund embezzlement case. City sessions court judge P J Tamakuwala concluded the hearing on the bail plea and reserved the order for May 23. Opposing the bail plea, the crime branch claimed that the couple had misused the money for their "personal and political cause". The crime branch is investigating the case on the basis of an FIR lodged in Ahmedabad on March 30 this year. In its submission, the crime branch said the accused misused the fund granted to their NGO Sabrang Trust by Union HRD Ministry between 2010 and 2013 for educational purpose, "to pay witnesses in serious cases in Gujarat (2002 riot cases) to make false deposition".
