Pak SC summons PM Abbasi in pilots' fake degrees case

Pakistan Supreme Court today ordered Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and heads of all Pakistani airlines to appear for the next hearing of a case pertaining to fake degrees of pilots. Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar asked Abbasi to appear as former CEO of an airline along with other heads of all Pakistani airlines. "Isn't it a matter of clash of interests?" asked the chief justice when told that the prime minister is also the head of Airblue airlines. "Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will have to appear in the capacity of a chief executive officer and not a premier." The chief justice, who was heading a three-member bench, said that he was issuing notices to heads of all Pakistani airlines as the matter has been pending for the last four months and reports in this regard have not been submitted as yet. Victim compensation scheme be implemented pan-India: NALSA to SC

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) today told the Supreme Court that a scheme proposed by it on compensation to victims of sexual assaults should be implemented throughout the country. The NALSA told a bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta that the legal services authority should be given power on its own to grant compensation to such victims and there should be madatory reporting of cases of sexual assaults and acid attacks. The apex court, while suggesting minor corrections in the scheme proposed by the NALSA, said the authority should also consider the aspect of recovery of funds if the cases lodged were found to be false. "If there is a false case, there has to be recovery. We hope there is no false case. You think about recovery of fund, otherwise you will be stuck in civil suits," the bench said. Man gets death sentence for killing minor step-children

A 27-year-old man was sentenced to death by a court here today for killing his two minor step-children in September 2017 as his wife was not willing to have a child with him. District and Session Judge B S Sandhu convicted Ashok Kumar alias Pintu, a resident of Baweta village in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh, for the murder of Manav (10) and Shivam (6) and awarded him capital punishment, saying the crime fell in the category of "rarest of rare" case. Kumar had married a local resident Rajni who had two sons from her previous marriage. He wanted have a child with Rajni but she refused. Annoyed over it, he kidnapped her sons and drowned the children in a river on September 25, 2017, according to the prosecution. The court also sentenced Kumar to ten years rigorous sentence and a fine of Rs 10,000 for kidnapping the children and five years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 for disposing of their dead bodies, said complainant Rajni's counsel Mohit Supra.

The Madras High Court today dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of actor-politician S Ve Shekher in a case of sharing a social media post derogatory to women journalists, and sharply rebuked him saying that when a celebrity like him forwards such messages, it sends a wrong message to the society. Judge names child after estranged inter-faith couple take battle to HC

In an unusual case, the Kerala High Court has christened a child of an estranged couple belonging to different religions after they fought over the matter. The court intervened after both father and mother, locked in a matrimonial dispute, were aggrieved by the "inaction" on the part of the municipality to issue a birth certificate in respect of their second child showing the name as per their respective wishes. While the mother said the child was baptised as 'Johan Mani Sachin', the father claimed that the name that they agreed to was 'Abhinav Sachin.'' SC refuses to pass any order on promotion of ED official

The Supreme Court today refused to pass an order regarding the promotion of an Enforcement Directorate officer probing the Aircel-Maxis deal case, who has claimed that frivolous complaints filed against him was deterring the department to promote him. The official, Rajeshwar Singh, has alleged that due to such false allegations being levelled against him, including one by a "so-called journalist" who was recently arrested by CBI, the department has not given him the promotion due to him. JK police expands probe in Kathua rape and murder case to Meerut

The Jammu and Kashmir police crime branch has expanded its probe in the Kathua rape and murder case to identify those who allegedly signed the attendance register at a Meerut college on behalf of an accused while he had gone to his village where the crime was committed, officials said here today. They said a crime branch team was camping in Meerut and taking inputs from the local police there. President Kovind gives assent to Delhi Working Journalist Act

President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent to the 'Delhi Working Journalist Amendment Act 2015' which seeks to ensure "effective implementation" of the Majithia Wage Board awards and provides penal provisions, including imprisonment of up to one year, in case of non-adherence to the Act. In December 2015, the Delhi Assembly had passed the Bill seeking to amend the Working Journalists Act for effecting changes in the existing law. Labour Minister Gopal Rai today said that Delhi has become "the first state" to bring amendments in the law to ensure "effective implementation" of the Majithia Wage Board in the country. As per the law which is applicable to Delhi-based media organisations, contractual employees will be treated as working journalists. Young woman commits suicide in Hry; youth booked

A 25-year-old woman committed suicide in Haryana's Charkhi Dadri area by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence, police said today. Police have registered a case against a youth on the complaint of the victim's parents after she took the extreme step yesterday. "We have registered a case of abetment to suicide against a youth. Kejriwal's kin sent to one-day judicial custody

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's relative Vinay Bansal, arrested by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in connection with the PWD scam, was today sent to one-day judicial custody by a Delhi court. Duty Metropolitian Magistrate Suri Mishra denied the ACB's application for three-day police remand saying Bansal is not medically fit. A draft is ready with the Ministry of Social Justice and it could be placed before the Union Cabinet in coming days if the government's review plea before the Supreme Court fails to yield a favourable ruling. SC reserves judgement on pleas challenging Aadhaar

The Supreme Court today reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of Aadhaar and its enabling 2016 law. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed all the parties concerned to file their written submissions to put forth their case.
