Bansal, who is a partner in a firm linked to alleged financial irregularities in building a drainage system for Public Works Department in northwest Delhi, was arrested early this morning. A 45-year-old man was today allegedly bludgeoned to death by unidentified persons in Nashik Road area of the city, police said. The man, identified as Balasaheb Donde, was found lying in a pool of blood at Vasco square in the locality, following which police were alerted. He was shifted to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, police said. The deceased was a resident of Rodobawadi locality in the area. Prima facie, Donde was attacked with a stone by the assailants, police said, adding that investigation is on.
The Bombay High Court has refused interim relief on a bail plea by three persons arrested in a murder case linked to the violence that erupted during the bicentenary celebrations of the Bhima-Koregaon battle in Pune district on January 1. The three accused, who are lodged in jail since January 10, had approached the high court earlier this week seeking bail. After hearing brief arguments in the case yesterday, vacation judge Bharati Dangre said there was no urgency in the matter and adjourned the bail pleas for further hearing next month. A class 12 student died and his brother sustained injuries after their scooter was hit by a car in Tanda on Jalandhar-Pathankot road here today, police said. Six occupants of the car were also injured in the accident, they. The incident occurred this morning when Manpreet Singh and his younger brother Gurkirat Singh, a student of Class 9, were going to school on a scooter, they said. A car hit them at Jalandhar-Pathankot road. Manpreet died on the spot while Gurkirat received injuries, they added. The six people travelling in the car were family members. Two people, including an assistant police inspector, were today killed when a vehicle hit their car near Gandhi Path bridge on Ajmer-Delhi national highway, police said today. The accident took place when an unidentified vehicle hit their car coming from Dudu town, Investigating officer and Constable Durga Prasad said. Bodies of deceased, identified as Rattan Lal (57) and Arvind Kumawat (32), were handed over to their family members after post-mortem, Prasad said. An Indian-origin businessman in the UK has been charged with his wife's murder, nearly three months after her body had been discovered in their home in Wolverhampton. Gurpreet Singh, 42, was charged yesterday by West Midlands Police detectives with the murder of 38-year-old Sarbjit Kaur. "This is a murder that has really shocked the local community and we have been working flat-out to move the investigation forward," said Detective Chief Inspector Chris Mallett from West Midlands Police's Homicide Team. "This is a significant development and we continue to support Kaur's many friends and family," he said. As many as 1,699 persons were sent to prison on charge of drunk driving in Hyderabad, with traffic cops filing over 9,600 charge sheets for the violations between January and April this year. The Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP), which regularly conducts a special drives against the menace of drunk driving has filed 9,648 charge sheets against drivers after they were caught driving drunk, a senior official said. "From January till April this year a total of 9,648 charge sheets were filed against persons driving in an inebriated state under Hyderabad Police Commissionerate. Out of it 1,699 persons were imprisoned for one to 30 days for drunk driving," Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar said. A total of 2.53 crore fine was imposed on the drunk drivers. An ex-serviceman allegedly stabbed his wife to death before committing suicide by hanging himself from a tree in Makhanpur village here, the police said today. Kuldeep Singh (55) attacked his wife, Balvinder Kaur, with a sharp-edged weapon yesterday following a heated argument with her over some issue, they said. Singh locked his son and daughter-in-law in a room before attacking his wife and fled soon after, the police said. Kaur was rushed to the GMC hospital by her son and neighbours, where she was declared brought dead, they said. Singh's body was later found hanging from a tree on the outskirts of the village, they said. The bodies were handed over to the family after postmortem and an investigation is underway, the police added.
The Supreme Court today stayed the Calcutta High Court order asking the West Bengal State Election Commission to accept nomination papers filed through e-mail for contesting the panchayat elections in the state. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra took note of the fact that almost 17,000 candidates have won the panchayat polls unopposed and directed the state poll panel not to declare them as winners. The bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, asked the state poll panel to ensure "free and fair" panchayat elections on May 14 in the state. The apex court said the high court's direction and the fact that 34 per cent of the candidates have won the election unopposed, "are worrying". On May 8, the high court had directed the SEC to accept the nominations of those candidates named by CPI(M) who had filed their papers electronically within the stipulated time before 3 pm on April 23.
Police destroyed opium crop being cultivated in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district and booked one person, a senior official said today. A police team accompanied by the magistrate was formed after receiving information about the crime, he said, adding the team rushed to the spot and destroyed the cultivation. Four teenagers went missing in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district and they were traced by police within six hours of their parents lodging a complaint. Three people from Preyan Bassain village told the police in Round Domail area late last night that their four children had gone missing from their homes on Tuesday evening, a senior police officer told PTI. Those missing were identified as two brothers Sunny Kumar (16) and Anil Kumar (14), Arun Kumar (16) and Rohit Kumar (12), he said. The police immediately formed teams and started a search for the children, he said, adding that they were found at the Ludhiana railway station in six hours. They were being brought back to Udhampur and further investigation into the case was underway, he said.
At least three people died in an explosion at a stone quarry in Jharkhand's Dumka district, police said today. The three victims were injured critically and rushed to Rampurhat hospital where they succumbed to their injuries, said Akhilesh Kumar Jha, DIG of Police, Santhal Parganas. Following the tragic incident, the district mining officer has been asked to probe whether the quarry, situated in Kulkulidangal village was legal or not, he said. Meanwhile, a team of police officers are on their way to the accident spot for further investigations.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the West Bengal Election Commission's plea that challenged the Calcutta High Court's order on allowing candidates to file online nominations in the upcoming panchayat elections."The court will hear the plea at 2:00 pm today," said Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra.The Calcutta HC, in an order issued on Wednesday, had directed the state Election Commission to accept online nominations filed as on April 23.The Communist Party of India (Marxist) reportedly filed around 800 through email.The panchayat polls were earlier due to take place between May 1 and May 7, which will now be held on May 14.
