SC to hear Muthalik's plea against Congress manifesto tomorrow

The Supreme Court will tomorrow hear Rashtriya Hindu Sena chief Pramod Muthalik plea alleging that the Congress party in its election manifesto in Karnataka was seeking votes in the name of religion. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud today agreed to hear Muthalik's plea, which also sought directions to the Election Commission to delete the Congress party's alleged appeal in its manifesto. Advocate Vishnu Jain mentioned the matter for urgent listing and said there is a seven-judge bench judgment which prohibits seeking of votes in the name of religion. The plea has also sought disqualification of those Congress candidates who are allegedly seeking votes in name of religion in the Karnataka polls. The Assembly election in Karnataka will be held on May 12, 2018 in 223 of the 224 constituencies. The results are scheduled to be announced on May 15.

3 held with Rs 1.9 cr drugs from Indo-Nepal border

Three suspected narcotics smugglers were arrested from the Indo-Nepal border by a joint team of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Uttar Pradesh Police, an official said today. Contraband worth Rs 1.90 crore was found in their possession, Sabharaj, Superitendent of Police said. The accused were arrested from Rupaideeha on the Indo-Nepal border yesterday, he said. They have been identified as Anil Kumar, Sagar and Keshre, the officer said. The police are probing their links.

4 booked for sexually harassing woman in UP

Four persons have been booked for allegedly sexually harassing and beating up a woman at Shahpur police station area here, the police said today. A case was registered against Amit Kumar, Johny, Guddu and Gullu for barging into the house of the victim yesterday and sexually harassing her. They also beat up the victim, Circle Officer Hariram Yadav said. The accused fled the spot when the victim raised an alarm, he said. The woman has been sent for medical examination, the officer added.

Dalit youth shot dead by lover's father

A Dalit youth was shot dead allegedly by the father of a girl he was in love with at Bachan Singh colony here, the police said today. Vikas (18) was called by accused Anil Kumar Gupta to the latter's house yesterday, SP(city) Ombir Singh said. The accused then shot the boy dead as he was opposed to his daughter's relationship with the victim, the officer said. Gupta was later arrested. A pistol used in the crime was found from his possession, the police said. The body has been sent for postmortem, they added.

Judge recuses from hearing defamation case against whistle-blower Sanjiv Chaturvedi

A judge has recused himself from hearing a defamation suit filed against whistle-blower IFS officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi, citing personal reasons. The case was filed by senior IAS officer and Himachal Pradesh chief secretary Vineet Chawdhry for disclosing his 'vigilance profile' containing allegations of impropriety by him. This court does not want to adjudicate the present matter for some personal reasons, which are being sent to the learned Chief Judicial Magistrate, Shimla..., Sidharth Sarpal, Additional Chief judicial Magistrate, said in his order dated April 27, a copy of which was made available recently. The next date of hearing in the matter has been fixed as June 15. Chawdhry, a 1982 batch IAS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre, had in 2016 filed a complaint with a local court seeking defamation proceedings against Chaturvedi. Cops seize gold bars worth over Rs 3 crore in Mizoram

The Mizoram Police has seized gold bars worth over Rs 3 crore from Champhai district and arrested one person in this connection, an official said today. P C Lalduhthlanga, the public relations officer of the Mizoram Police, said gold bars weighing 9.96 kg, worth over Rs 3.18 crore, were seized from Hruaikawn hamlet of the district, near India-Myanmar border, on Monday evening. Zohmahruaia (51), a resident of Champhai district, was arrested for alleged possession of the gold bars, reportedly smuggled from Myanmar, the PRO added.

S Korea ex-president Park leaves jail for medical care

Disgraced former South Korean president Park Geun-hye briefly left prison to receive medical care at a hospital in Seoul today, a spokesman for the medical facility said. Park was convicted of corruption and jailed for 24 years last month, completing a dramatic fall from grace for the country's first female leader who became a figure of public fury and ridicule. The 66-year-old has been allowed out of prison several times for treatment for ailments including a toe injury and backache and for dental care since her arrest in March last year. Park arrived at the civilian hospital Seoul St. Mary's accompanied by prison authorities, the spokesman said. He declined to give further details but Yonhap news agency said she will be treated for her chronic back pain. Park, who has boycotted all court hearings since October claiming unfair treatment, has waived her right to appeal against the lower court ruling. However prosecutors have argued the sentence was too lenient for Park and an appeals .

Sachin Sawant murder: Seven arrested, sent to custody till May 14

The Mumbai Police on Tuesday arrested seven people in connection with the murder of Shiv Sena leader Sachin Sawant.The Police informed that they have also recovered some weapons from the possession of the accused.All the arrested accused have been sent to police custody till May 14 by the Bombay High Court.Sawant was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Kandivali's Gokul Nagar area here in April.The local leader from Kurar in Maharashtra was shot in the chest and was declared brought dead, according to doctors at Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali.He was a former deputy branch head of the Shiv Sena from Kurar.

US indicts ex-CIA officer suspected of spying for China

The Justice Department says it has indicted a former CIA case officer suspected of spying for China. Jerry Chun Shing Lee, a 53-year-old US citizen who lives in Hong Kong, was charged yesterday with conspiracy to commit espionage and retention of information about US defence. His lawyer says his client is not a Chinese spy. He says Lee is a loyal American who served in the US military and worked at the CIA. Federal prosecutors allege that three years after Lee left the CIA in 2007, two Chinese intelligence officers approached him and offered to pay him for information. The indictment says Lee made numerous unexplained cash deposits, and lied to the U.S. government when asked about travel to China and his actions overseas.

Russian oligarch questioned over Trump lawyer payments: report

A recently sanctioned Russian oligarch has been questioned by FBI agents over hundreds of thousands of dollars his company's US affiliate paid to President Donald Trump's longtime personal attorney, CNN reported. CNN yesterday said Renova Group chairman Viktor Vekselberg was questioned along with his cousin Andrew Intrater, who heads the firm's US affiliate Columbus Nova, by agents investigating Russian interference in the 2016 American presidential election. The payments were made after the election but while Michael Cohen was still Trump's personal attorney. BJP leader shot dead in Allahabad

A BJP leader named Pawan Kesari was shot dead by unidentified people in Phulpur of Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad.Kesari was attacked by the miscreants on Tuesday. CBI books MCI clerks over graft charges

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Tuesday, registered a case against three individuals, including two clerks of the Medical Council of India (MCI) on charges of corruption.The charges levelled against the individuals claim that the clerks, along with the other person, used to take bribes from various private medical colleges in order to give favours with regard to work pending with the MCI.This comes in the wake of the CBI also registering a case against four individuals, while also arresting three of them over alleged irregularities in the conduction of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).The four accused, identified as Mohit Kumar, Arti Tomar, Ashwini Tomar and Manoj Kumar Sikka, had allegedly helped some candidates to qualify the NEET exams.The four have been booked on charges of criminal conspiracy and cheating.The CBI also conducted searches at six locations across the country and arrested three from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Punjab.

Max Hospital case: Delhi Medical Council gives clean chits to doctors

The Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has given a clean chit to the doctors of the Max Hospital, wherein a newborn was allegedly declared dead last year.In December last year, the hospital in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh area had handed over a pair of newborn twins, thinking both to be dead, to the family in plastic bags.When the twins were brought to the burial ground, the parents, just before performing the last rites, realised that one of them was showing movements inside the bag.They immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared one of them to be alive.A medical negligence case was registered under section 308 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the hospital.The Delhi Police had also filed a status report in the case, wherein, the Investigating Officer mentioned that the hospital attendants could not give a satisfactory reply and were evasive when asked under which circumstances the bodies were handed over to the family.The report also stated that the hospital registers only ...

Delhi BJP alleges labour fund scam, ACB registers case

Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari today alleged that AAP workers were being registered as construction labourers to misuse labour welfare fund and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia and minister Gopal Rai are responsible for it. Gold bars worth Rs 12.6 cr seized; two Chinese nationals held

Two Chinese nationals were today detained at the airport here for their alleged involvement in smuggling of gold bars weighing 40 kg worth Rs 12.6 crore, Customs department officials said. The Air Intelligence Unit officials of the department recovered an unclaimed baggage that was kept in one of the toilets at the Anna International terminal, an official release said. On scanning of the stroller bag, it was found that 40 units of gold bars weighing one kg each, with Chinese markings and worth Rs 12.6 crore were concealed in it, it said. Preliminary investigations revealed that the baggage was carried by two Chinese male passengers who arrived from Hong Kong earlier that day. Following the tight vigilance at the airport, the release said the passengers had left the baggage in a toilet and were later detained at a hotel in the city. The details about the identities of the two accused were not revealed. The gold bars were seized under the Customs Act, 1962 and further investigation was .
