Bombay HC suggests special police unit to probe serious crimes

Emphasising the need for prompt and timely completion of investigations, the Bombay High Court today suggested setting up of a special unit in the police to probe serious crimes like murder and offences related to women. Timely investigation into serious offences like murder, rape and other cases pertaining to women or minors is the need of the hour, a division bench of Justices N H Patil and G S Kulkarni said. The court was hearing a case of rape and kidnapping of a 13-year-old girl. The girl's father had filed a petition seeking permission to terminate her 26-week pregnancy. The court had, earlier this month, permitted the girl to terminate her pregnancy but had sought to know from the police the status of the investigation in the case. Government counsel Abhinandan Vagyani today told the court that the FIR was registered in the case last July when the girl was kidnapped. Man arrested with 71-kg opium in Rajasthan

A man was arrested today with 71-kg opium, worth nearly Rs 1.5 crore in the domestic market, in Rajasthan's Chhitorgarh district, police said. A resident of Neemuch district in Madhya Pradesh, Sunil Nagda alias Chauthmal was arrested when he was travelling a car from Neemuch to Jodhpur, Nimbaheda police station SHO Darshan Singh said. He said that the seized opium is worth Rs 1.5 crore in the domestic market. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and further investigation into the matter was on, he added.

3 arrested for kidnapping 8-yr-old boy

Three persons were arrested from here for allegedly kidnapping an eight-year-old boy on Friday, police said today. Krishna Kant, Inder and Vineet have confessed to have kidnapping the child, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said. During interrogation, the accused said they had planned to demand a ransom of Rs 20 lakh as they wanted to open a factory, the officer said. "The boy, Laxman, was rescued within 22 hours of his kidnapping from an area on the ouskirts of the Mehrana village here," the SP said. The accused could not make the ransom demand as the mobile phone of the boy's father was switched off, he said. They were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Gangester Act, the officer said.

Tension grips parts of Baghpat after recovery of bovine animal's organ

Tension gripped the Badaut police station area near here following reports of recovery of bovine animals' body parts this morning. A police team was rushed to the eastern Yamunanagar area after reports that some pieces of flesh were lying there, ASP Baghpat Ashish Srivastav said. He said samples of the flesh have been sent for examination to the veterinary department. The police are yet to receive any complaint in this regard but the samples have been sent to ascertain the charge that they were of a cow, he said adding the culprits would be identified and nabbed soon. The locals, meanwhile, staged a protest against the incident and raised slogans against the police. 3 country-made pistols, 11 cartridges seized from car; 1 held

Police have seized three country- made pistols and 11 'live' cartridges from a car and arrested its owner, an official said today. Acting on a tip-off, a police team searched the car parked in the Dutta Nagar area last night and found three country-made pistols, 11 'live' cartridges and a sharp-edged weapon hidden in it, Madhukar Kad, in-charge of the Ambad police station said. All the items were seized, he said. The car owner, Manoj Machhindra Shardul (25), has been arrested, the police officer said. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Arms Act, Kad added.

Woman dies in hospital, kin say cockroach found in ventilator

Relatives of a 43-year-old woman, who died during treatment at a city-based private hospital, have alleged that she might have died due to breathlessness caused by the presence of a live cockroach in the ventilator attached to her, a charge the hospital has denied. The woman, Anjali Bairagi, a resident of Panchavati area in the city, was admitted to Dr Vasantrao Pawar Medical College in Adgaon area in the city on April 17 after she consumed poison. She died during treatment on April 22, the hospital authorities said. Her relatives alleged that negligence on the part of the hospital led to her death as they found a live cockroach inside the ventilator. They have sought a stern action against the hospital, which is run by Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj (MVPS). Security force arrests 9 Naxals in Chhattisgarh

The security forces arrested nine Naxals in Konta of Sukma district, Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.In a successful search operation by the security forces, one platoon commander who had a bounty of Rs. 2 lakh on his head has also been arrested.Earlier, in one of the biggest encounters in Maharashtra, 37 Naxals were killed in three days. Tehsildars, driver arrested on graft charges

The Rajasthan anti-corruption bureau today arrested a tehsildar and his driver for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 in Pali district, an official said. Tehsildar, Sojat, Satyanarayan Verma, is accused of demanding the bribe from Rajmal Mewara through his driver, Superintendent of Police (SP), anti-corruption bureau, Kailash Chand Vishnoi, said. He had taken the bribe for a land mutation related work, he said. "The accused had taken Rs 5,000 before the complaint (by Mewara) was verified. A trap was laid today and the accused were caught red-handed taking the bribe amount of Rs 10,000 in the tehsil office," the officer said. Both the accused were arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Nalini Chidambaram's plea against ED's summons dismissed

The Madras High Court today dismissed a petition by former Union minister P Chidambaram wife Nalini Chidambaram, challenging ED's summons to her to appear as a witness in its money laundering probe in the Saradha chit fund scam case. Justice S M Subramaniam rejected Nalini's contention that women cannot be called for investigation out of their place of residence under CrPC Sec 160, saying such exemptions are not mandatory and are subject to facts and circumstances of a case. "This court is of the opinion that based on gender, exemption cannot be sought for in a routine manner," he said in a 145-page order on Nalini's petition and that of the Enforcement Directorate seeking to vacate a stay granted by the court earlier. Also holding that such an exemption was not provided under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the judge directed the ED to issue fresh summons fixing a date for the investigation and proceed with it in accordance with law. Tihar Jail's sentence review board meeting postponed

A meeting of Tihar Jail's sentence review board scheduled for today to decide on the release of some prisoners, including model Jessica Lall murder convict Manu Sharma, has been postponed. An official, who is a member of the sentence review board, said the meeting had to be postponed as Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain did not give his consent. A Delhi government spokesperson claimed that there was no such meeting scheduled for today as the minister had not given his consent in the first place. The sentence review board is a statory body which has a judge, Delhi home minister, law secretary and home secretary among members. The board was to consider Manu Sharma's release. Last month, Jessica Lall's sister Sabrina Lall wrote a letter to Tihar Jail authorities, saying that she had no objection to his release. Minor raped in Balrampur

An eight year-old girl was allegedly raped at knifepoint by a man in a village here, police said today. The girl was returning from her agriculture field when the accused Chunnu (28) dragged her into a field and allegedly raped her at knifepoint yesterday. Villagers working nearby rushed on hearing the cries of the child and nabbed the accused, police said ,adding the girl was admitted to a hospital. DIG, Devi Patan, Anil Kumar Rai who visited the victim in hospital and met her family members, said the accused has been arrested and the girl was being taken to Gonda for treatment.

Man found dead under suspicious circumstances in farm house

A man was found dead under suspicious circumstances today in his farm house in Rajasthan's Tonk district, police said. The body of 55-year-old Mohammad Khalid Rashid was found in a room of the house. He had a wound to his head, they said "Prima facie, it appears that he died of a gunshot. Post mortem is being conducted by a medical board in Tonk," SHO, Tonk Sadar, Amar Singh said, adding that the matter was being investigated. Police said he used to stay alone in the house.

Kathua case: Crime Branch to approach court against lawyer

The Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch will soon approach a local court in Kathua against a defence lawyer who is allegedly circulating twisted facts in the case of the gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old girl to vitiate the atmosphere, officials said here. The police has taken cognisance of a CD in which a witness is seen as saying that he had been coerced by the Crime Branch to give a statement against Vishal Sharma, one of those alleged to have raped the child, officials said. An Indonesian court sentenced a senior politician to 15 years in prison for his role in the theft of $170 million of public money by officials, a victory for anti-corruption police fighting the country's rampant graft. Setya Novanto, the former speaker of parliament and former chairman of the Golkar party, sat impassively as the guilty verdict and sentence were announced at the Jakarta Corruption Court. Prosecutors said Novanto was among about 80 officials who used the introduction of a $440 million electronic identity card system in 2011 and 2012 to steal more than a third of the funds. During the trial, Novanto denied any wrongdoing while also using his knowledge of the conspiracy to accuse other senior politicians in an unsuccessful attempt to gain leniency as an informant.

Comic legend Stan Lee has been accussed of sexual misconduct by massage therapist Maria Carballo. Carballo has sued Lee, 95, and his assistant, Mac Anderson, according to a report in Blast. She claimed she was called to perform a massage over the weekend in Lee's hotel room at a Hyatt Regency in Chicago. Carballo alleged that Lee began to fondle himself while lying face down and later, while she was massaging his quadriceps, she said Lee began to moan and groan. Kathua rape-murder: Cop, SPO arrested by SIT move J-K HC

A policeman and a SPO arrested in connection with the Kathua rape and murder case have moved the Jammu and Kashmir High Court seeking a fresh CBI probe into the matter and quashing of the investigation by the state crime branch. A college student and his woman relative on a motorcycle died in a hit-and-run incident last evening, police said. Abdul Kadar (25) and Sajitha (35) were returning to Komarapalayam after meeting their kin when a cargo van hit the two-wheeler head-on near a government hospital and sped away, they said. Tight security in Jodhpur ahead of verdict in Asaram case

Security has been stepped up and prohibitory orders issued in the city ahead of the trial court verdict in the rape case against self-styled godman Asaram tomorrow. As per the directions of the Rajasthan High Court, the trial court will deliver its verdict in the case in Jodhpur Central Jail premises.
