Pak: Sharif appears in court in corruption trial

Pakistan's ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif today dashed back home from London to appear in court for his trial in corruption cases. Three cases were launched against him last September following a verdict by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case on July 28 that disqualified him as prime minister. Sharif was accompanied by his daughter Maryam who also came from London, and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar, as he arrived in court here to attend the hearing. The corruption cases against the Sharif family pertain to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills, Flagship Investment Ltd, and Avenfield properties. Accountability court Judge Mohammad Bashir began the proceedings in the Al-Azizia Steel Mill case but had to adjourn it until tomorrow due to absence of a key witness. 2 arrested with pistol, live ammunition in Jammu

The Jammu and Kashmir Police said today it has arrested two men wanted on murder and abduction charges from Jammu city, and seized a country-made pistol and live ammunition from them. Babber Khan and Riyaz Ahmed were arrested from Paloura area last night, a police official said. A case has been registered at Janipur police station. The police in an initial investigation found the two men were wanted on charges of murder and abduction in unrelated cases, he said. Their possible involvement in other criminal cases is being probed, the police official said.

Man held with cannabis in Ramban

A man was today arrested with 700 grams of cannabis from a bus in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. During a routine checking, a police team intercepted the bus near Chanderkote village and seized the cannabis from Gulam Hassan, a resident of Banihal town, police said. He was arrested and a case was registered against him.

Missing 10-yr old girl found outside Haj House in Ghaziabad

A 10-year-old girl, who was missing since the last four days, was found outside a Haj house in Ghaziabad late Sunday night.The girl was reportedly kept in a Madarsa, where she was found in an unconscious state. Vice president only statutory authority to reject impeachment notice: F S Nariman

Eminent jurist Fali S Nariman today said the issues raised in the impeachment notice against CJI Dipak Misra were not of "sufficient gravity and rightly rejected" by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. Nariman said Naidu, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, was the only statutory authority to take the decision on the notice. The notice was moved by the Congress and seven other opposition parties against the Chief Justice of India (CJI) last week. "He (Naidu) was the only statutory authority to take that decision and in my view he has rightly taken the decision. The grounds raised in the impeachment notice are not of sufficient gravity. "When you have a man like the chief justice of the Supreme Court, it (impeachment notice) has to have something that is far more important than just saying he did not do this or that. Impeachment motion against CJI rejected as it lacked facts: VP Naidu

Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said on Monday that the impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra lacked substantial facts to hold the latter guilty of misbehaviour.Naidu said, "I have applied my mind to all five charges made out in Impeachment Motion and examined all annexed documents. CJI, other judges sat at 10.45 AM to undertake court proceedings

Supreme Court judges, including Chief Justice Dipak Misra, today initiated court proceedings at 10.45 AM instead of the scheduled 10.30 AM amid speculation that they held a brief meeting on the issue of the impeachment notice against the CJI. CJI Misra, who usually holds his court at 10.30 AM, entered the courtroom almost 15 minutes late and started hearing lawyers who wanted their petitions to be listed for urgent mentioning. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy was among the first few litigants to mention his petition for urgent hearing. The CJI's courtroom was packed with lawyers including those who had no matters to argue for. Bitcoin extortion case: Amreli SP detained by Gujarat CID

Amreli Superintendent of Police (SP) Jagdish Patel has been detained by the Gujarat CID-Crime for questioning for his alleged role in extorting bitcoins and cash from a builder, an official said today. Jagdish Patel was taken into custody from his residence in Amreli district last night and brought to Gandhinagar by CID-Crime, which is probing the case, he said. "Amreli SP Jagdish Patel has been detained by us for questioning. He has not been arrested yet," Gujarat CID-Crime DGP Ashish Bhatia said. A few days back, a police inspector from Amreli district, Anant Patel, was arrested in the case. He is accused of extorting bitcoins worth crores of rupees and cash from Surat-based builder Shailesh Bhatt. Lawyer held for assaulting minor on train in TN

A 57-year-old lawyer was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl on the Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Express, police said. The advocate allegedly assaulted her when she was asleep. The girl woke up and raised an alarm, following which her family nabbed him and informed the Travelling Ticket Examiner. The Chennai-based lawyer had boarded the train from Coimbatore on April 21 night, police said. He was handed over to railway police here, which registered a case against him under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act), 2012. The lawyer was later lodged in a prison in Coimbatore.

BJP leader among 125 people booked for obstructing anti-encroachment drive

Over 125 people, including a local BJP leader, were booked for allegedly obstructing an anti-encroachment drive here, police said today. The case was registered following a complaint by the Muzaffarnager Municipal board's executive officer, according to City Magistrate Vebhav Mishra. BJP leader Sunil Tayal was among those who were booked for disrupting the anti-encroachment drive, an official said. Woman arrested for killing newborn daughter

A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her newborn daughter, police said. The accused, Vaishali Pradhan, residing in Umbarde village near here, allegedly cut the throat of her daughter, born just a week ago, with sharpened fingernails on Saturday, police said. The woman, who already has two daughters aged five and three, was apparently worried that she would not be able to raise her third child given her poor financial condition, the police said. The homemaker was arrested yesterday by the Khadakpada police and booked on murder charge, they said. Her husband is a habitual drinker, they said. After killing the child, the woman took her to the Thane Civil Hospital for "treatment". Doctors felt something amiss and informed the police, they said. During questioning, Pradhan confessed to the crime, the police added.

UP: Woman attacked for resisting rape

A woman was attacked allegedly by three men after she resisted their attempt to rape her at a village here, police said today. The incident took place yesterday and a case was registered against the perpetrators, who are at large, they said. The woman was hit with an iron rod after she resisted their bid to rape her. She was alone in the house as her husband had gone out, police said. The matter is being investigated, they said. In another incident in Sujru village, three woman were injured after four people attacked them over an old enmity, police said. The woman were admitted to a local hospital, they said. Haryana: Minor sexually assaulted in Yamunanagar

A 13-year-old minor was allegedly sexually assaulted by a group of four men near a temple in Haryana's Yamunanagar on Sunday.The incident occurred when the girl's parents were away. The minor was sleeping in her house with her siblings when the men barged into her house and kidnapped her.They then took the girl to an area near a temple and allegedly raped her.
