Death penalty for rapists of children below 12 years

The Centre on Saturday approved the ordinance to award death sentence to the rapists of children below the age of 12.Following a meeting of the Union Cabinet here, the government cleared the amendment in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.In the wake of the gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi had earlier expressed her ministry's intention to amend the POCSO to make provision for death penalty in such cases.Soon after, the Centre submitted its report while responding to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava in the Supreme Court, seeking maximum sentence of death penalty to those offenders involved in the rape and brutal murder of children between the age group of 0 to 12.

Weinstein still trying to get his emails to battle sexual assault claims

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has asked a bankruptcy judge to order the Weinstein Co to turn over his emails and personal files, which he claims will help discredit sexual assault allegations against him. Weinstein is under criminal investigation in Los Angeles, New York, and London. He is also facing numerous lawsuits from former employees and actors who accuse him of harassment and sexual assault. Weinstein has been disputing this issue with the company since October, when he filed suit in Delaware. The company has continued to refuse access to the material, reported Variety. According to Weinstein, the company, which fired him on October 8, is intentionally preventing him from defending himself. He also argues that this is counter to the interests of the company and its creditors, as it exposes the Weinstein Co estate to increased civil liability. Shridhar Patil takes over as new Kathua SP

Kathua Superintendent of Police (SP) Suleman Choudhary has been replaced with Shridhar Patil.The development comes days after the investigation began into the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl from the district.The case dates back to January when the father of the victim filed an FIR after the child went missing on January 10.After an initial arrest, protests followed questioning the handling of the case by the local police. Abu Salem extortion case verdict deferred

A Delhi Court on Saturday deferred pronouncement of order in the 2002 extortion case involving 1993 Mumbai blasts case convict Abu Salem till April 28.Earlier in April, the court deferred order in the said case due to unavailability of the concerned judge.Salem had earlier claimed that the prosecution did not have enough evidence against him in the case after a fresh production warrant was issued against him in February.Through his lawyer, the gangster had also claimed that his trial in the case violated an order by which he was extradited to India from Portugal in 2005.Salem is facing trial for allegedly demanding Rs. 5 crore as protection money from Delhi businessman Ashok Gupta in 2002.

Asaram verdict: Security stepped up around victim's house

With a special SC/ST court in Jodhpur all set to pronounce its verdit in a 2012 rape case against self-styled godman Asaram, the district administration here has stepped up security around the house of the victim. "The security of the victim's family is continuously being monitored...Five policemen have been deployed at the house and a strict vigil is being maintained on all the visitors," SP (City) Dinesh Tripathi told PTI today. 14-yr-old raped in Uttar Pradesh, 3 arrested

A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped in a village here by two youths, who have been arrested, police said today. The girl was allegedly lured by a woman of her village to a secluded spot and handed over to the youths, who raped her yesterday, Superintendent of Police (SP) Pratap Kumar Gupta said. On the complaint lodged the the victim's family, an FIR was registered, he said. The accused were identified as Babloo Prajapati and Bhaiyan, and the woman as Savita Prajapati, the officer said. They have been arrested and the girl has been sent for medical examination, the SP added.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Hema Malini on Saturday said the number of crimes reported against women and minors might be rising due to the recent publicity it has gathered.Speaking to ANI, the actor-turned-politician said that such crimes might have been common earlier too."Such cases are being given more publicity these days. Rajasthan HC tightens security ahead of Asaram rape case verdict

The Rajasthan High Court has beefed up security arrangements to ward off any untoward incident during the pronouncement of judgment in Asaram Bapu rape case, said Jodhpur Police on Saturday.The judgement in the case will be pronounced inside Jodhpur Central Jail on April 25.The police further said that Section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) will be imposed in Jodhpur till April 30."Rajasthan High Court made arrangements for judgement in Asaram rape case to be pronounced inside Jodhpur Central Jail on April 25. One held in Surat rape case

One person was arrested on Saturday, in connection with the rape and murder of a minor girl in Surat.The person was arrested from Ahmedabad.The body of the minor girl, believed to be in the age group of 9 to 11 years was found from a cricket ground in Bhestan area of Surat on April 6, with 86 injury marks.After a five-hour-long post-mortem, it was revealed that the girl was raped and tortured for at least eight days, and was later strangled to death.On April 17, the victim was identified to be a resident of Andhra Pradesh who had gone missing in October last year.The police had registered a case of rape and booked the unidentified accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Amendment in POCSO Act will not give 'salvage to victims': DMK

Woman kills eight month old son in Delhi

A 29-year-old woman killed her eight-month-old son and then attempted to commit suicide at Aman Vihar on Friday.The mother has been admitted to the hospital and is being treated.According to reports, the woman was influenced by a godman whom she used to visit.The family members of the woman claimed that she had earlier attempted to kill her other son as well.Her husband found her body in a pool of blood beside the body of their son. She killed her son by slitting his throat and then repeatedly stabbed herself with a kitchen knife.Police said that a case has been registered against the woman and further probe is underway."The mother has been admitted to hospital for treatment. Sub-inspector suspended for demanding Pizza for FIR

A lady Sub-Inspector was allegedly suspended for demanding pizza from a restaurant owner, who came to register a complaint in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow.The incident is of Hazratganj Police Station, where the owner, Rohit Berry went to the police station to file a case against an unknown man, who did not pay for the food in the restaurant.The lady Sub-Inspector wrote the FIR, but asked the owner to bring Pizza when he comes again to take the copy of the FIR."She asked us to bring food and take our FIR copy. 7-year-old sexually assaulted in Raipur school

In yet another case of crime against minors, a seven-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted at Raipur's Campion School.The father of the minor girl told ANI, "It was her first day to the school on Wednesday. She went to the school and we wanted to meet her at the school, but we weren't allowed to do so. While changing her clothes after she returned from school, my wife noticed blood on her private parts and she was not wearing undergarments."When asked if she had reported the matter to the teacher, the minor replied that the teacher was absent on the second day of her school.Meanwhile, the police said that they were investigating the matter and were examining CCTV footages of the school. TN: Petrol bomb hurled at pro-Hindu outfit leader's residence

Unidentified miscreants hurled two petrol bombs at the residence of Hindu Munnani leader Dhanapal in Mettupalayam here on Friday.According to the police, the bomb partially damaged a car and a two-wheeler parked on the porch.Dhanpal, who is working as a manager in a petrol bunk, noticed the charred vehicles when he returned home from duty earlier in the morning.The police recovered a metal can containing petrol and wicks.A case has been registered over the incident and a special police team has been formed to nab the culprits.On a related note, a petrol bomb was allegedly hurled on the car of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district president C.R. An Indian-American teenager, wanted on a felony firearms possession warrant, was shot dead by a California police after he opened fire on them, officials said. Class 10 student abducted by friends for money, battered to death: Police

A class 10 student was allegedly kidnapped by two teenage boys, who, in panic, ended up killing him after the boy fell off their motorcycle and received severe head injuries, police said today. Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said that Vaishali-resident Pramod Sharma lodged a missing persons report on April 17 in which he said that his 16-year-old son had gone out of their house the previous day but did not return. 25-yr-old man arrested for stealing bags of courier delivery boys

A 25-year-old man was arrested for stealing a bag containing cell phones, shopping cards from the vehicle of a courier delivery boy in southeast Delhi's New Friends Colony, a police official said today. On March 21, the courier delivery boy with an Okhla-based company, told police that someone had stolen his bag when he had gone to deliver a parcel at Tribhuvan Complex, Mathura Road. The bag contained mobile phones, cheque books and shopping cards. On April 16, one Amit Mehrolia, was nabbed and questioned in connection with the case, the official said. 8-yr-old kidnapped from Mathura on way back from school

An eight-year-old boy was allegedly kidnapped by two motorcycle-borne people while he was returning from his school here today, police said. Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhakar Chaudhary said the class 3 student was lifted from near the Krishna Colony under the limits of the Kosi Kalan police station this afternoon. He is a student of a nearby school and his father is a small-time businessman, the police said. Four teams have been deployed to recover the child, the SSP said. The officer said the alleged kidnappers tried to take away another schoolboy, a year senior to the abducted child, but failed in their attempt.
