Man, 35, attempts to sexually assault 3-year-old girl: Police

A 35-year-old man allegedly attempted to sexually assault a three-year-old girl today in southeast Delhis Sarita Vihar area, the police said. The girl was playing in front of her house when the accused took her to the first floor of the building and started removing her clothes, they added. Hearing the girl's cry for help, her paternal aunt rushed there and saw the accused with the girl, the police said. She informed the neighbours who caught hold of the accused and handed him over to the police. The accused works as a security guard in Jasola. The girl's father is a street-vendor and sells vegetables, police said.

Gold bars worth Rs 2.50 Cr seized from air passenger

Customs officials at the airport here today seized 7.9 kilograms of gold bars, estimated to be worth Rs 2.50 crore, and arrested one person, an official release said. The officials of the Air Intelligence wing intercepted a 24-year-old passenger, Umar Syed, upon his arrival from Dubai after noticing his suspicious movement through the aero-bridge corridor today, an official release said. During searches, 68 units of gold bars with 24 karat purity, weighing 7.9 kgs, were found concealed in his backpack. The gold bars were worth Rs 2.50 crore and were seized under the provisions of Customs Act, the release said. The passenger was arrested and further investigation is underway, it added.

J-K govt to probe audio clip on Kathua rape-and-murder case

The Jammu and Kashmir government today forwarded to probe agencies an audio clip in which two people are heard discussing how money was collected purportedly in the name of the eight-year-old Kathua rape-and-murder victim but never reached her family. In the audio clip, which has gone viral on social media, the two can be heard discussing that a huge sum of money was collected in the name of the victim but that her family did not get it. The discussion in the audio clip also suggests that a fight has already begun among the people who helped collect funds in the name of the girl. "I have heard the audio clip. When this clip came to me, I forwarded it to agencies for probing it," Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh told reporters here. He also said the "heinous and barbaric" nature of the killing of the girl that rattled entire country must be deeply probed in all its aspects. "Those who have done it must be punished severely." Cop accidentally shoots self inside PCR van, survives

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI), posted in the PCR van in northwest Delhi's Bhalswa Dairy, was injured after he accidentally shot himself with a service weapon, police said. The incident took place in the morning when Dharambir and ASI Ramkishan were on duty inside the van. Ramkishan went to washroom after handing over his service weapon to Dharambir. He heard a gunshot and rushed to find his colleague lying in a pool of blood, the police said. Dharambir was taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital and from there he was referred to another hospital since his condition was critical. His condition is said to be stable now. Initially, it was suspected that it is a case of attempt to commit suicide but later it emerged that he had accidentally shot himself, the police said.

Woman raped by five in Jharkhand

A woman has lodged a complaint that she was raped by a man she had met on social media and his four friends in Jharkhand's Bokaro district, police said today. The five had raped her on the night of April 13, she said in her police complaint lodged yesterday. Ramgarh SDPO Radha Prem Kishore said the woman, a resident of Gola block of Ramgarh district, alleged that she had met a man on social media and they used to talk on phone. He had asked her to meet at Gola on April 13 and she agreed. After they met, he had taken her to a village under Mahuatand police station of Bokaro district where he and his four friends raped her, the woman claimed. The accused also threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed it to anyone, she said. The woman has been sent to government hospital in Ramgarh for medical test, the SDPO said adding that a hunt has been launched to arrest the five.

Actress Kim Sharma records her statement in Range Rover case

Bollywood actor Kim Sharma today recorded her statement in connection with a Range Rover car case, at suburban Khar police station. The actress is accused of illegally driving the high-end vehicle and not returning it to its owner, a businessman from Rajasthan. "Sharma came to police station at around 12:30 pm and recorded her statement for over 15 minutes," said Khar police station senior inspector Ramchandra Jadhav. He, however, refused to divulge details, saying the matter is under investigation. According to police, the businessman, Dilip Kumar, had parked the luxury car at Sharma and her now estranged husband Ali Punjani's residence in suburban Khar in good faith since he doesn't have a house in Mumbai. Dead cow meat supply racket unearthed, 2 held

West Bengal Police today unearthed a racket that supplies meat of dead cow to hotels and restaurants in Kolkata, a police officer said. The incident surfaced after the recent controversy of sale of dead chicken soaked in formalin rocked the state. Two persons of a four-member gang were arrested from here in South 24 Parganas district for allegedly supplying meat of dead cow to restaurants and hotels in Kolkata, the officer of the state police said. The two were captured by local people when the duo was trying to take out a dead cow from the area in a taxi this morning, he said adding that they were later arrested. Two others involved in the racket are absconding. Meanwhile, a senior official of the Budge Budge Municipality said though nobody has lodged any complaint in this regard, the municipality would initiate an investigation.

Seer dies after setting himself afire in police station premises IN Ayodhya

A seer died after setting himself afire in a police station here protesting against alleged inaction over his stolen items, following which three policemen, including an SHO, were suspended, police said today. On Sunday, Ram Das Tyagi, a resident of Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal, had gone to Hanumangarhi temple and there someone snatched his bag, containing around Rs 4,000, they said. Tyagi alleged that police had not lodged an FIR in the case and attempted to immolate himself on Tuesday in the Ram Janambhoomi police station premises. He suffered 70 per cent burns and was referred to Lucknow Trauma Centre where he died this morning, police said. NDTV to deposit Rs 10 lakh on Delhi HC direction

New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV)today said it will deposit Rs 10 lakh as per the order of Delhi High Court for revealing the identity of eight-year-old Kathua rape victim. Media houses, issued notices for revealing the identity of the eight-year-old Kathua rape victim, yesterday apologised before the Delhi High Court and were directed to pay Rs 10 lakh each to the Jammu and Kashmir Victim Compensation Fund. "In this regard, we wish to inform you that during the Court proceedings on April 18, 2018, the company as well as the other respondent media houses submitted their willingness to deposit amounts with the Jammu & Kashmir State Legal Services Authority to be used towards compensation to victims and families of victims of sexual violence," NDTV said in a BSE filing. Rs 60.4 cr sanctioned for juvenile home: TN govt to HC

The Tamil Nadu government today informed the Madras High Court that it has accorded administrative sanction for various works and initiatives related to juvenile justice system to be taken up at a total cost of over Rs 60 crore. The Principal Secretary of Social Welfare and Noon Meal Programme department filed an additional affidavit giving details of compliance of the directions of the high court's Juvenile Justice Committee given earlier. The affidavit filed before a division bench of justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and R Dhandapani submitted that Rs 60.4 crore had been sanctioned toward construction of new building for observation home for boys and girls in Madurai. It also said the government has created 32 posts of District Child Protection Officers. Listing out other initiatives, the affidavit said a Juvenile Justice Fund had been created with a corpus of Rs 25 lakh for the welfare and rehabilitation of children as early as in November, 2016 itself. NCLAT refuses stay on Binani Cement proceedings at Kolkata NCLT

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) today refused to stay the NCLT proceedings on the resolution process of debt-ridden Binani Cement. The appellate tribunal, however, admitted the petition filed by Binani Industries who has sought all documents related to the resolution process undertaken by the Committee of Creditors of Binani Cements. Over proceedings at the National Company Law Tribunal, Kolkata, Mukhopadhaya said: "We would not stay proceedings of NCLT at this stage and if they pass any order it has come to us finally." The tribunal also said it would decide on the nature of 29 A of the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code (IBC). "We would decide under what circumstances section 29 A would be applicable. 33-year-old man commits suicide

A 33-year old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj area, police said today. The incident took place yesterday, they said, adding that no suicide note was found from the spot. After getting the information, the police reached the spot and rushed the victim, Kshitij Malhotra, to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Malhotra worked as a digital marketing head for Allianz Insurance. "The man's family had come to the hospital and alleged that the relations between him and his wife were not good. They suspected foul play in his death. Gujarat HC likely to pronounce Naroda-Patiya riot case verdict

The Gujarat High Court is likely to pronounce its verdict on appeals in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case tomorrow. A division bench of justices Harsha Devani and A S Supehiya had reserved the order last August after the hearing concluded. In August 2012, a special court for SIT cases had sentenced 32 people, including former BJP minister Maya Kodnani, to life imprisonment. Kodnani was sentenced to 28 years of imprisonment. Another high-profile accused, former Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi, was given life imprisonment till death. Seven accused were given enhanced life imprisonment of 21 years, which they will serve after undergoing 10 years' imprisonment under IPC section 326 (causing grievous hurt). SC rejects claim that judge Loya's ECG not done at Dande hospital

The Supreme Court today rejected the claim of activist- lawyer Prashant Bhushan that no electrocardiogram (ECG) of judge B H Loya was conducted at Nagpur's Dande hospital, where he was initially taken for treatment after he complained of chest pain. The apex court said that the mention of an ECG in the progress notes of the doctor at Meditrina hospital, where he was taken later, indicated that the procedure was carried out at Dande hospital. It rejected the submission of Bhushan, who sought an independent probe into the death of Loya that no ECG was done at Dande hospital where the judge was taken by four judges --Shrikant Kulkarni, S M Modak, V C Barde and Roopesh Rathi -- for medical assistance after he complained of chest pain.
