Court orders to shift Bawana to ordinary high risk ward of Tihar

A Delhi court on Friday directed Tihar Jail Authority to shift imprisoned gangster Neeraj Bawana from solitary confinement to ordinary high risk ward of Tihar jail.Bawana had claimed that he was being kept in inhuman conditions in the prison and his fundamental rights were being violated.On March 17, Bawana wrote a letter to Patiala House Court in which he talked about the poor condition of the inmates lodged in high-risk ward of the country's largest prison.He threatened to go on a hunger strike if better facilities of food and medicines were not provided to Tihar jail inmates.On November 28 last year, Tihar Jail authorities were asked to file reply on Bawana's plea.In his plea, Bawana had told the court that he was kept in a high-risk ward of Jail Number 1 along with other 45 inmates. He also said that the cells were stinking and had thousands of insects and plaster dust kept on falling from the wall.The gangster has been charge sheeted in various cases including offences under the .

Guwahati IT commissioner's Dehradun residence sealed

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Saturday sealed residence of Guwahati's Income Tax Commissioner (Audit) Swetabh Suman.He along with an I-T Officer Pratap Das, a chartered accountant Ramesh Goenka, and a middleman Pranjol Sarma were arrested by the CBI in Assam for their alleged involvement in a case of tax evasion and criminal conspiracy.The CBI said that Suman had demanded Rs. 50 lakh from a businessman to show undue favour to him by passing favourable order in an appeal against the businessman.

School bus kills 12-year-old boy

A 12-year-old boy was killed and his friend injured after being hit by a school bus when they were playing on the roadside, the police said today. The incident happened yesterday when the drier was parking the bus of a school near Vivekananda Camp. The two children were rushed to a hospital where Rahul was declared dead while his friend, 11-year-old Jagdish, is currently undergoing treatment. The children were residents of Vivekananda Camp. The driver was arrested, they added.

Bihar: Woman knocks doors for justice in husband's killing

A woman in Bihar's Gaya is struggling to get her husband's killers arrested in a land dispute case. With a video of her husband's killing, the lady is knocking doors for justice.The incident happened on February 19 this year, when criminals brutally thrashed victim Ajay Kumar, till he succumbed to his injuries. Man from Punjab held in JK for carrying 14 kg of poppy straw

A man from Punjab was arrested in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir today, following the recovery of 14 kgs of poppy straw from his possession. Acting on a specific information, a check-point was set up at Qazigund in Kulgam district, a police spokesman said, adding that during checking, the accused, who was carrying a nylon bag, was intercepted. A search led to the recovery of 14 kgs of poppy straw from the possession of the accused, identified as Salam Din, a resident of Maler Kotla in Punjab, the police spokesman said. The accused was arrested and booked under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he added.

JNU professor booked for molesting student: Police

A professor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University has been booked after a student of the varsity's Social Sciences Department alleged that she was molested by him, the police said today. Last month, another JNU professor was arrested on charges of sexually harassing nine women students. He was later granted bail by a city court. The police said that they received a complaint from the Social Sciences Department student yesterday, following which a case was registered. The FIR was lodged on charges of assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty, criminal intimidation, and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, they said. The student told the police that the professor had been harassing her for a long time but when the situation got out of hand, she approached the police.

Order CBI or judicial probe into 'custodial' death of man:

Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala today demanded a judicial or a CBI probe into the alleged custodial death of a 26-year-old man in Varappuzha near Kochi on April 9. The ruling CPI(M)-led LDF government should hand over the case to CBI or order a judicial probe, Chennithala told reporters here. Attempts were also being made by CPI(M) to influence the witnesses, the Leader of Opposition in the assembly alleged. The victim S R Sreejith had died in a private hospital. His family alleged that he was kicked several times in the stomach and thrashed by the policemen who took him into custody in connection with a case relating to the death of a 55-year-old CPI(M) sympathiser. Seven police personnel have been suspended in connection with the death of Sreejith so far and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been formed to probe the case.

Plea in HC to fix graduation as minimum qualification to fight civic polls

A petition was filed in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking fixing graduation as the minimum educational qualification for people contesting local body elections in Tamil Nadu. When the plea came up before the court, justices C T Selvam and A M Basheer Ahmed yesterday ordered issuance of notice to the state government and posted the matter for further hearing next week. The petitioners, all students of law, submitted that educational qualification had to be fixed for those contesting the civic elections. In states such as Haryana, Rajasthan and Bihar, a minimum qualification had been fixed for the local body representatives, they submitted. The state administration had been modernised with the introduction of computers, the petitioners said, adding several schemes, undertaken by the councillors, could not be implemented effectively because they were not educationally qualified. At least, a degree should be fixed as a minimum qualification, they said.

Malayalam actor condemns Kathua rape incident

Malayalam actor Parvathy today condemned the alleged gangrape and murder of an eight-year old girl from Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir, saying she was 'ashamed' of the incident. She posted a picture of herself on Facebook, in which she is seen holding a placard that read: "I am Hindustan. I am ashamed. #JusticeforAasifa. 8 years old. Gangraped. Murdered in 'Devi'stan temple. #KATHUA." The eight-year old girl from the nomadic Bakerwal Muslim community disappeared near her house on January 10 in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district. A week later, her body was found in the same area. UN Chief condemns Kathua rape

United Nations (UN) chief Antonio Guterres has condemned the gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district and has expressed hope of perpetrators being punished."I think we've seen the media reports of this horrific case, of the abuse and the murder of a young girl. Delhi Metro: Man held with bullet round

A 40-year-old man was today apprehended at a Delhi Metro station for allegedly carrying a live bullet in his baggage, officials said. They said Anil Kumar, hailing from Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh, was found carrying the rounds by CISF personnel at the Shahdara station when his bag was being scanned. Kumar could not furnish any license or document for carrying the bullet round, suspected to be of a country-wide pistol, the officials said. He was handed over to the Delhi Police by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) team for further investigation, they said.

Man stabs girlfriend, injures mother, and kills self in UP

A 25-year-old man hanged himself after stabbing his girlfriend and severely injuring his mother in Barra, police said today. The deceased has been identified as Ankit Pal, a resident of Varun Vihar, Barra. "The 22-year-old girl who sustained multiple stab wounds was admitted to Kanshiram hospital," said Superintendent of Police (south), Ashok Verma. According to police, Ankit was in an affair with the girl for the past several years, but over the last few months, the girl started ignoring him after which he planned to end his life after eliminating her. "Ankit stabbed the girl multiple times while she was on way to home (from a school where she was a teacher)," said Verma. "Ankit fled from the spot and walked to his house where he attacked his mother, Savitri Pal, repeatedly with a stick causing grievous injuries on her head.
