Austrian man convicted for plans to attack German sites

An Austrian court convicted a 19-year-old man of involvement in plans for two Islamic extremist attacks in Germany, one of which was supposed to be carried out by a 12-year-old boy. The defendant was convicted yesterday at the Vienna state court of two counts of attempted incitement to murder as a terrorist crime, as well as membership in a terrorist organisation and other offences, the Austrian Press Agency reported. He was given a nine-year sentence. The Austrian of Albanian descent was accused of trying to incite an already radicalised 12-year-old to attack a Christmas market in Ludwigshafen in 2016, and plotting an attack on the United States' Ramstein Air Base along with a 16-year-old girl. During his trial, he denied giving any orders and said that, while he had considered targeting Ramstein, he had dropped the idea. Amarinder defends govt stand in road rage case against Sidhu

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today defended his government's stand in the Supreme Court in a 30-year-old road rage case against cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, saying it was the only legal option available to it. The state government in the apex court yesterday favoured the Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict convicting and awarding a three-year jail term to Sidhu in the 1988 case. Gurnam Singh, a Patiala resident, had died after he was given fist blow by Sidhu. "Though the government could not have taken any other stand in the apex court, other than what it had been taken in the trial and high court earlier, Sidhu deserved the court's consideration," Singh said, adding "Had we done so, we would have been accused of lying either now or earlier." Singh, however, hoped the judge would take into account Sidhu's "contribution to the society and the country" in his final verdict. 3 men impersonating as BSES officials arrested

The Delhi Police has arrested three people for allegedly impersonating as BSES officials and extorting money from people by conducting fake raids. The accused were identified as Brij Mohan, Mohit Kumar and Rajeev, the police said, adding a mobile phone and fake BSES identity cards used to commit the crime were recovered from them. According to a case lodged at Dwarka South police station, four people came to the complainant's house impersonating themselves as BSES officers. The accused had fake identity cards. They checked electricity meter and demanded Rs 50,000 alleging the meter was tempered, the police said. On suspicion, the complainant visited the BSES office and checked for their identity. On interrogation the fraud came to light and one of the accused Brij Mohan was arrested. "During sustained interrogation, he revealed about his associates who have also been arrested. 2 FMRI doctors held for negligence in Gurgaon

Gurgaon Police today arrested two senior doctors of Fortis Memorial and Research Institute (FMRI)here on charges of negligence during treatment of a woman who had suffered a fatal cardiac arrest, an official said. Cardiology consultant S S Murthy and medical superintendent V Nagarjuna were arrested by the Special Investigation Team of the police and produced before a civil court, which granted them bail but asked them to remain present during the next hearing in the case, the official said. According to the charge-sheet filed in the case, Murthy had not given medicines to Seema Ghai, who was admitted to the hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest on May 12, 2017. As per the documents provided by Ghai's kin to the SIT, the patient was admitted to the hospital well in time. Candlelight marches, protests carried out in Jammu

Scores of people today staged candlelight marches and demonstrations here to protest the alleged rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl who belonged to the Bakerwal community. The students of Jammu University carried ply-cards and raised slogans demanding justice to the minor. Demonstrations were staged after Friday prayers in the Sheehdi Chowk area. The protests were joined by the Gujjar community who took to the streets to demand death penalty for the accused. Gujjar and Bakerwal leader Choudhary Nazakat Khatana was also present at the protest site. The protestors also raised slogans against the Bar Association of Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Belgium investigates report of nude women photos on internet

Brussels prosecutors said today they are investigating a news report that images of hundreds of nude young women were uploaded to the internet without their consent. Belgium's Dutch-language VTM Nieuws reported thousands of photos and videos, including some showing them having sex, appeared on Discord, a chat room for video gamers. The images, some of which carried the full names of the victims, were classed according to region in Belgium. "VTM provided the Brussels prosecutor's office with all the information gathered during their report on the basis of which an investigation was opened," the office said. "The suspects publicly distributed photos or videos of naked young women without their consent," it added. Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan faces new rape accusation

The prominent Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan, who is in French detention over several rape allegations, is facing a new accusation of rape, this time in Switzerland, a Swiss daily reported today. A Swiss woman is pressing criminal charges against Ramadan, 55, alleging he raped her and held her against her will for several hours in a Geneva hotel room a decade ago, the Tribune de Geneve (TdG) daily reported. When contacted by AFP, the woman's lawyer Romain Jordan confirmed that criminal charges had been filed in Geneva on Friday, but said he did not want to make any further comments at this stage. "We are confident in our case," he said. The alleged victim, who was not identified, is not the first to accuse Ramadan. The prominent TV pundit and Oxford University professor, whose grandfather founded Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood movement, was detained by a French court in February over charges that he raped two Muslim women in France. HC to pass orders on April 17 on ED's plea against Nalini Chidambaram

The Madras High Court will pass orders on April 17 on an Enforcement Directorate petition seeking to vacate the stay on summons issued to Nalini Chidambaram, wife of former Union minister P Chidambaram, in connection with its money laundering probe in the Saradha chit fund scam case. Justice S M Subramaniam today posted the petition to April 17 for passing orders after hearing the arguments of both the sides. Earlier, in his oral observations, the judge said the summons was issued in 2016 and Nalini had gained two years by virtue of the interim stay granted by the court. Why cannot she appear before the ED and sort out the issue and help the investigation," he said. The ED had on November 7, 2016 issued summons to Nalini to appear before its Kolkata office as a witness in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. German police shoot dead man in bakery rampage

Police in the central German city of Fulda said they shot dead a young Afghan refugee who went on a violent rampage in a bakery early today. The 19-year-old allegedly attacked the driver of a delivery truck at the bakery at 4:20 am (0220 GMT), before smashing the shop's windows, local police and prosecutors said. As police arrived on the scene, the young man flung stones at the officers. Police subsequently opened fire, killing the man. His motives, as well as the circumstances of the attack were as yet unclear, added authorities. A spokesman for the prosecution service told AFP that there were currently no indication that the attack was due to political reasons.

Police constable arrested for killing second wife

A police constable posted at Sahibabad Police Station here was arrested for killing his second wife allegedly over some monetary dispute, police said today. Deputy Superintendent of Police Rakesh Mishra said that the accused was brought here on police custody for questioning. During interrogation, he confessed that his second wife was forcing him to divorce his first wife. She was also asking him to return the money he had taken from her for some purpose. The accused took the woman to Mainpuri district on the pretext of some work and shot her thrice and threw her body in a canal, the police said. The body of of the woman was recovered after two days from the canal.

Kathua rape case: Crime Branch did a good job, says DGP

Jammu and Kashmir Police chief S P Vaid today said the Crime Branch probing the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua district "has done a commendable job". The DGP's remarks came a day after he said the police had no objection to a CBI probe into the case. "The Crime Branch has done a commendable job in investigating the unfortunate rape and murder of the girl. They are very competent," Singh told reporters here. Woman activist held, 11 IEDs recovered in Jharkhand

Eleven IEDs were recovered and a woman activist of a militant group was arrested, following an encounter, in two separate incidents in Jharkhand today, police said. Acting on a tip-off, police launched a massive search operation in Daldaliya jungle under Lokayanyanpur police station of Giridih district and recovered the IEDs, SP Surendra Kumar Jha said. Jha said police suspects that the IEDs were meant for use during the municipal elections scheduled to be held on April 16. In another incident in Simdega district, the woman activist of a militant group was held following an encounter in Bidhuli jungle under Bano police station of the district, police said. Police have recovered two pistols, 80 live cartridges, six mobile phones from the area, a police official said.

Asaram case: Raj police moves HC, appeals for verdict on Apr 17 to avoid law & order situation

The Rajasthan Police has moved the high court, seeking a direction to the trial court hearing the rape case against self-styled godman Asaram to pronounce the judgment on April 17.
