However, the family alleged that he was murdered.The case has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The apparent rift between the Chief Justice of India and Justice J Chelameswar today came to the fore again with the senior most judge expressing anguish over the affairs in the Supreme Court and refusing to list a PIL questioning the existing roster practice of allocation of cases by the CJI. Justice Chelameswar accused "someone" of running a "relentless tirade" against him as if he was trying to "grab something". The Allahabad High Court came down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh government today on the Unnao rape incident, asking it whether it proposes to arrest accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. A bench of Chief Justice D B Bhosale and Justice Suneet Kumar, taking cognisance of the gangrape case on a letter to the court by senior lawyer Gopal Swaroop Chaturvedi, heard the matter in detail and will pronounce its order tomorrow. The court also questioned the conduct of the police in the case, saying whom will a victim approach to register a complaint. Advocate General Raghvendra Singh, who was present in the court on its direction, informed the bench that on August 17, 2017, an application was sent to the Chief Minister's Office in which allegations of rape was made against the MLA. The Punjab government today told the Supreme Court that the Punjab and Haryana High Court was correct in convicting its incumbent minister Navjot Singh Sidhu in the road rage case. Counsel for Punjab government told a bench of Justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul that Patiala resident Gurnam Singh had died after he was given fist blow by Sidhu. The government said the trial court was wrong in its finding that Singh had died of cardiac arrest and not brain hemorrhage. "There is not a single evidence that suggest that the cause of death was cardiac arrest and not brain hemorrhage. The trial court verdict was rightly set aside by the High Court. Accused A1 (Navjot Singh Sidhu) had given fiesty blow to deceased Gurnam Singh leading to his death through brain hemorrhage," the state government counsel told the bench.
The Supreme Court today directed the listing of a case of a news portal's scribes, who are facing criminal defamation complaint filed by BJP President Amit Shah's son, before an appropriate bench for final disposal on April 18. ) An Indore-bound passenger was apprehended at the Delhi airport for allegedly carrying 10 live bullet rounds in his baggage, an official said today. A CISF officer, deputed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) to scan the baggage of commuters, detected a bullet-like object on the x-ray monitor yesterday, they said. "Ten live bullet rounds of .32mm calibre were recovered from the passenger identified as V K Sharma. The man was not allowed to take the flight and was handed over to the police as he could not produce any documents for carrying the ammunition," the official said, adding Sharma was later arrested.

Two men were arrested for allegedly smuggling bovines in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir today, the police said. Police intercepted the two accused while they were ferrying thirteen bovines in Reasi area, a police officer said. Liyaqat Ali Khatana and Mohammad Sharif Khatana of Kashmir were arrested and the bovines rescued, he said, adding a case has been registered in this regard.
