Justice Chelameswar expresses anguish over affairs in SC, refuses to list PIL on allocation of cases

The Supreme Court's most senior judge, Justice J Chelameswar, today again expressed anguish over the affairs in the apex court and refused to order listing of a PIL filed by former union Law Minister Shanti Bhushan seeking formulation of guidelines on allocation of cases. In fast-moving developments, advocate Prashant Bhushan, after being denied urgent listing of his father's PIL, rushed to Chief Justice Dipak Misra's court and mentioned the matter for listing expeditiously. The bench headed by CJI said, "We will look into it." Bhushan initially mentioned the matter before Justice Chelameswar and said this was an emergency situation. He said he was referring the matter to Justice Chelameswar's bench as the PIL challenges the master of roster concept and the CJI cannot deal with it. Justice Chelameswar said he would not like to deal with the matter as the reasons were "too obvious". Peru nationals arrested from Mumbai airport with 4 kg cocaine

Two Peru nationals, including a woman, were arrested by the NCB from the Mumbai airport for allegedly smuggling into the country over four kg of cocaine, officials said today. Michael (35) and Mariya (25), were intercepted yesterday, when they landed in Mumbai from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, they said. The operation was based on an input provided by the American Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the officials said. They were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and 4.3 kg of "high grade" cocaine was seized from them, they said. This is the second instance of smuggling this year in which high quantity of cocaine, a party drug, was seized. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had seized about four kg of cocaine in Cochin earlier this year. In an another narcotics case, the agency had arrested three people and seized 56.8 kg of opium and 19.93 kg of poppy straw in Rajasthan's Ajmer district yesterday. Kathua rape case: Mufti says 'justice will be delivered'

Anganwadi worker rescued in Balasore district

An Anganwadi worker was rescued by the police after she was allegedly assaulted by villagers and locked in a room of the Anganwadi Centre in Balasore district. The police swung into action after the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of Bahanaga block informed them about the incident yesterday. "After getting the information, police personnel immediately rushed to the spot and rescued the woman," said K C Palei, Inspector In-Charge of Khantapada police station. The woman has lodged a complaint with the police that some people barged into the Atasapur Anganwadi Centre while she was on duty, manhandled her and locked her in a room. The woman alleged that she was injured in the incident and her mobile phone, neckless and Rs 5,000 were were snatched away by the culprits, police said. The IIC said investigation was in progress and necessary action would be taken.

FIR filed against BJP MLA in Unnao gangrape case, case to be handed to CBI

Police in Uttar Pradesh today registered an FIR against ruling BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection with the alleged gangrape of a minor girl in Unnao, hours after the government said it would hand over investigation into the case to the CBI. Till the premier investigating agency takes over, the local police will continue with the probe, Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said. The letter for handing over the probe to the CBI for maintaining total transparency in the case will be sent today, he told reporters. The decision on whether to arrest the accused MLA will be taken by the CBI on the merits of the case after investigations, he said. Unnao rape victim had filed false case earlier: BJP MLA

Medical officer, pharmacist arrested for graft

A doctor and a pharmacist were arrested by anti-graft vigilance sleuths for allegedly taking bribe from a woman for discharge of her husband after a surgery at a hospital in Odisha's Ganjam district. Dr Sishir Kumar Pradhan, Medical Officer and P Raghaba Rao Patra, Pharmacist of the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Bomokei, were arrested yesterday after a trap was laid by vigilance officers, a vigilance release said. The accused had demanded Rs 2,000 from the woman for discharge of her husband, whose operation had been conducted on April 4 at the CHC. Following a trap, Dr Pradhan was caught by the vigilance officers at his office chamber at the CHC, the release said. After receiving the bribe, Dr Pradhan had kept it in his shirt pocket and given Rs 500 to the pharmacist from the amount, the release said. Dalit woman's body found with throat slit

A 22 year-old Dalit woman was killed in Nainaha Bartali village under Sangrampur police station area here, the police said today. The body of the woman, a BA first year student, was found this morning about 100 metres from her house with her throat slit, the police added. Additional Superintendent of Police BC Dubey said the body has been sent for post mortem examination and a police team has been formed to work out the case.

92-yr-old farmer killed in Thane

A 92-old-farmer was allegedly killed by unidentified persons at his farm in the district, the police said today. The deceased, identified as Mahadeo Jadhav, was sleeping along with other family members in his house at a farm in Mohane village when some persons allegedly barged in and forcible took him away on Wednesday late night, police PRO Sukhada Narkar said. Yesterday morning, the farmer's body, bearing several wounds on head and face, was found at some distance from his house, she said. The body was sent for postmortem and a case was registered against unidentified persons under IPC section 302 (murder) at the Khadakpada police station of Kalyan division, Narkar said. A search was underway to nab the killers, she said. The police suspect that the killing could be an attempt by some miscreants to grab the farmer's land.

Man involved in 50 chain-snatchings held in Thane

The police has arrested a 40-year-old man allegedly involved in about 50 cases of chain-snatching in Thane and the neighbouring Palghar and Mumbai districts. The man, identified as Pradeep Banerjee, was arrested by the Kashimira police on April 6, district rural superintendent of police Mahesh Patil said today. The police seized from him some stolen gold jewellery and a scooter without the number plate, he said. The police also arrested the accused's wife and another man for the sale and purchase of the stolen jewellery, he said. Patil said during interrogation, the accused admitted to the police about his involvement in nearly 50 cases of chain-snatching in the three districts from January this year. CBI busts antique smuggling racket, retrieves 81 artifacts

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday busted an antique smuggling racket and recovered 81 artifacts dating back to several hundred years, from a residence in east Delhi.A case has been registered against businessman named Subodh Dalal and the same has been detained for questioning, according to an official statement.During their search, the CBI found that out of 81 artifacts, 34 were found to be unregistered and 47 of them are suspected to have fake documentation.An investigation is underway to find out whether the artifacts were stolen from religious places or excavation sites.
