Man arrested for 'sexually assaulting' minor daughters

A 42-year-old fashion designer was arrested in suburban Vakola for allegedly sexually assaulting his two daughters, police said today. The alleged crime came to light when the elder of the two sisters, who is 17 years old, told her mother about the ordeal last week, said a police official. The younger sister is 13 years old, he said. When the woman confronted her husband about it, he abused her, after which she took both the girls to the Vakola police station and lodged a complaint, said senior inspector Kailashchand Avhad. Police registered a case of sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) against the man. The elder girl, who is a class XI student, told police that her father had sexually assaulted her many times in the last two years, the officer said. 8-yr-old girl burnt alive after rape in Pak's Punjab

An eight-year-old girl was burnt alive after being raped in Pakistan's Punjab province, a brutal incident which triggered protests in the province. A large number of people of Chichawatni, Sahiwal district, some 200-km from Lahore, held a demonstration and blocked the main G.T Road for several hours to lodge their protest against the brutal incident. On the assurance of police that claimed to have arrested a suspect the protesters dispersed. According to police, the grade-II student of the government girls high school Chichawatni went missing on Sunday after she left home to buy some sweets from a grocery shop. When she did not return after a while, her family members and neighbours held a search. They found her in a deserted street in an unconscious state with burns all over her body. Initially she was shifted to Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital Chichawatni from where she was brought to Lahore's Jinnah Hospital. Man sentenced to death for killing 6-yr-old boy

A court here today sentenced a 35-year-old man to be hanged to death for killing a six-year-old boy in Amariya township last year. Additional Sessions/Special Sessions judge Sanjiv Kumar Shukla awarded the death sentence to Nazim Mian for brutally killing Mohd Musahib on February 21, 2017, government counsel Qazi Rifakat Hussain Farhan said. The convict had brutally chopped off the victim's body into pieces and was caught eating the flesh of boy, the government counsel said. Because of the brutality of the killing, the local lawyers had refused to provide legal aid to the convict and he was later provided the counsel by the government in the form of 'nyay mitra.' After hearing both the sides, the POCSO court pronounced the judgement today.

Kerala Lok Ayukta orders seizure of 4.35 cents of govt land

The Kerala Lok Ayukta today ordered the Thiruvananthapuram district Collector to further seize 4.356 cents of prime government land from a real estate developer at nearby Pattoor, where a high rise apartment and shopping complex was constructed. A divisionbench of the Lok Ayukta comprising Justices Pious C Kuriakose and K P Balachandran gave the interim order on a petition by one Joy Kaitharath after perusing the evidence and conducting a detailed hearing. Earlier, the Lok Ayukta had ordered seizure of 12.279 cents of land from the developer. It also ordered seizures of about 1.06 cents of land from persons who had taken possession of government land. The petitioner had approached the Lok Ayukta in 2014 alleging that the developers, Artech Realtors, had usurped government land at Pattoor for constructing high-rise building comprising flats and a shopping complex. Hookah bars: NGT slams fine on Delhi govt

The National Green Tribunal today pulled up the Delhi government for not furnishing a list of restaurants and bars in the city which permit hookah smoking on their premises and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on it. A bench headed by acting NGT Chairperson Justice Jawad Rahim also directed the AAP government to submit the data within 10 days from today. The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by Manjinder Singh Sirsa, a BJP MLA from Rajouri Garden, seeking immediate ban on hookah bars in the national capital. During the hearing, advocate S S Ahluwalia, appearing for the petitioner, told the bench that neither has the government carried out searches nor has it produced the list of restaurants serving hookah as per the December 12, 2017 order of the tribunal. The bench asked the government counsel as to why it had failed to submit the data. Farmer's tries to commit suicide near CM's camp office

A 24-year-old farmer today allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming pesticide near Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrsekhar Rao's camp office in Begumpet area, police said. Saidulu, a native of Suryapet district, is undergoing treatment in hospital, police Inspector S Ravindar said. Saidulu does not own any land, he said. "He did some tenancy farming and claims to have incurred losses. He consumed some pesticide at CM's camp office. He was rushed to the hospital immediately," the police official said. Police, however, have not booked any case, he added.

Foreign currencies worth Rs 22.48 lakh seized in Kerala

Foreign currencies with a face value of Rs 22.48 lakh was today seized from a Dubai-bound passenger at the international airport here. The currencies included US dollars, UAE dirhams and Saudi riyals, a customs release said. The Dubai-bound passenger tried to smuggle the currencies by concealing them in his shoes and hand luggage, it said adding the man was arrested and later released on bail. In another incident, 244 cartons of cigarettes worth Rs 2.44 lakh were seized from nine people, the release said.

Criminal, wanted since 2010, arrested by Delhi Police

A criminal, who had been evading arrest since 2010 in a dacoity-cum-murder case and two robbery cases in the city, has been nabbed by the police. Accused Babu Khan (38), a native of Bihar, was arrested by a Crime Branch team from Ashok Nagar yesterday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Joy Tirkey said. A country-made pistol and three live cartridges were seized from the possession of the accused, the officer said, adding that the police had announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for any information leading to his arrest. Khan was allegedly involved in a dacoity in Kirti Nagar in August, 2004. During the dacoity, Khan and four of his associates had shot dead a businessman, who resisted their attempt, the DCP said. In February 2010, Khan's gang had allegedly robbed a man in a DTC bus, near Mandir Marg. HC seeks reply of Karti's CA on ED's plea to cancel his bail

The Delhi High Court today sought the response of Karti Chidambaram's chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman on the plea of Enforcement Directorate seeking cancellation of bail granted to him by a special court last month in connection with INX Media money laundering case. Justice A K Pathak admitted the petition filed by ED special counsel Nitesh Rana challenging a special court's March 13 order granting bail to Bhaskararaman, who was accused of assisting Karti, son of former union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, to manage his "ill-gotten wealth" in India and abroad. Seeking cancellation of his bail, Rana argued that it was a serious crime and the special court had ignored the gravity of the offence committed by the chartered accountant. UP govt decides to withdraw rape case against Swami Chinmayananda

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to withdraw rape and kidnapping case against former union minister Swami Chinamayananda, official sources said here today. A letter in this regard has been sent to the district administration on March 6 on behalf of the government, the sources said. Subsequently, the Shahjahanpur administration had on March 9 written to the prosecution officer of the case for its withdrawal. On the other hand, the rape victim has sent letters to the President and the district judge raising objections over the move, urging them for immediate issuance of warrant against the accused. JCCI to keep away from Jammu bandh tomorrow

The Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries (JCCI) today decided to keep away from the general strike tomorrow called by the Jammu Bar Association (JBA) over various issues, including deportation of Rohingyas from Jammu and handing over of the Kathua rape-and-murder case to the CBI. "There is no justification for the strike called by the Jammu High Court Bar Association for tomorrow as both the issues are sub-judice. Hence, the JCCI does not support this call for the bandh," JCCI president Rakesh Gupta said here. The Jammu Bar had called for a general strike in Jammu region on April 11, claiming support from civil society, political parties and other bodies, including the JCCI. Court grants bail to 30 arrested for Md Bazar clashes

A local court here today granted bail to 30 persons, arrested in connection with the clashes that took place at Md Bazar, regarding filing of nominations for the upcoming panchayat polls in the state. The clashes took place on Saturday after which the police had arrested the accused, police said. The police lodged a complaint against 56 known and 10,000 unknown persons. While 28 persons were arrested on Saturday, two others were arrested on Monday. "The accused were booked under the Arms Act and the IPC," their lawyer, Somnath Mukherjee, said. All the accused were granted bail by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Rina Talukdar since the police failed to produce any arms or ammunition before the court, he said. The police also could not prove that the accused were involved in the incident that occurred at Md Bazar on Saturday and therefore they were granted bail, Mukherjee added.

The killing of two Shiv Sena leaders in Ahmednagar over the weekend seems to be a fallout of political rivalry, Maharashtra Director General of Police Satish Mathur today said. U'khand child rights commission asks govt to constitute children's courts

The Uttarakhand Commission for Protection of Child Rights (UCPCR) today asked the state government to constitute children's courts for quick disposal of cases related to offences against them, saying absence of such courts in the state is delaying justice. In a letter to state chief secretary Utpal Kumar Singh, UCPCRchairman Yogendra Khanduri said section 25 of the Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act - 2005 provides for constitution of children's courts to stop encroachment of their basic rights and quick disposal of cases related to offences against them. "However, the commission has learnt that such courts have not been constituted in Uttarakhand yet which is coming in the way of quick delivery of justice to children," Khanduri said.
