Both hands of a woman were fractured by her husband and in-laws in a village here allegedly for giving birth to three daughters and not bearing a male child in eight years of married life, police said. "The woman has suffered serious injuries and we are waiting for the medical report. Action will be taken against the suspects," Superintendent of Police (Rural) Subhash Chandra Shakya said today. The incident took place in Babra village and came to light recently after the parents of Rekha Devi (30) dropped by for a visit and found her in an injured condition. Two out of five miscreants were arrested on Monday for opening fire at villagers using a stolen vehicle of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office bearer in Rajasthan's Baran district on Monday."Five miscreants allegedly open fire on villagers. The Centre today sought to allay fears that water was not being released to Tamil Nadu for irrigation from Cauvery basin reservoirs due to non-formation of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB). Union Water Resources Secretary UP Singh clarified that as per the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) award, water can be released from the dam between February and May only to maintain 'environmental-flow' in the river and not for any other purpose. His remarks came amid reports of protests by Tamil Nadu farmers seeking establishment of the CMB and their complaints of non-availability of water for irrigation. Some people are making it as if right now there is an urgency to release water and as if the water is not being released because of non-formation of CMB or something. The Enforcement Directorate today questioned former finance minister P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram in connection with the Aircel Maxis money laundering case, officials said today. This is the first time the agency is questioning him in connection with the case, they said. The case relates to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2006 by then finance minister P Chidambaram. The agency is investigating "the circumstances of the FIPB approval granted by the then finance minister", an official said.
A 42-year-old Indian man was found dead in a lagoon in Sharjah, prompting police to launch an investigation, a media report said today. The body was noticed on Sunday by a passerby, who informed police. A team comprising of police officers, forensic experts and crime scene specialists reached the site and fished out the body and shifted it to the forensic laboratory for autopsy, the Khaleej Times reported. The police said they could not figure out the reason of death as there were no signs of violence on his body. The forensic report will reveal the cause of his death. Four people were arrested for killing a 15-month-old baby over a property dispute here, police said today. The infant's aunt Farhana along with her three accomplice on April 5 had bludgeoned his head. The accused had then packed the body in a cement bag and threw it in a field in Kunjeta village here, the police said. The incident came into light when the body started emitting foul smell, A S P (rural) Vishwa Jeet Srivastava said today. All the four accused have been arrested, the ASP said.
The NHRC has sent a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government and the state police chief seeking a detailed report on the death of the father of an alleged gangrape victim in judicial custody in Unnao, and has asked the authorities to ensure "the aggrieved family is not subjected to further harassment". The Delhi Police has filed charge sheet against an Indian Air Force officer, arrested in February for alleged espionage. The charge sheet was filed before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Shehrawat here against Group Captain Arun Marwah, who was booked under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) for allegedly leaking classified documents to a woman through WhatsApp. The court has put up the final report for taking cognisance on April 24. As per the complaint filed against Marwah by the Air Force, he was caught by the counter-intelligence wing after he was found carrying a high-end phone at the headquarters which are banned there. Punishment under the Official Secrets Act entails a jail term of up to seven years.
A special CBI court today rejected the anticipatory bail plea filed by the owners of Vadodara-based Diamond Power Infrastructure Ltd (DPIL), which is accused of cheating banks to the tune of Rs 2,654 crore. The plea filed by the promoter of the company Suresh Bhatnagar and his sons and directors Amit Bhatnagar and Sumit Bhatnagar was rejected by special CBI court judge N G Dave. The accused had sought anticipatory bail after the CBI registered a criminal case against DPIL, alleging that through its management, the company had fraudulently availed credit facilities from a consortium of 11 banks since 2008, leaving behind an outstanding debt of Rs 2,654.40 crore as on June 29, 2016. DPIL manufactures electric cables and equipment. The hearing in the case concluded last Saturday. Police today arrested Atul Singh, the brother of a BJP MLA, in connection with the gangrape of an 18-year-old woman in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh and the custodial death of the victim's father, and a special investigation team (SIT) was formed to probe the matters. "The SIT will go into the entire gamut of issues involved in the incident," ADG (Law and Order) Anand Kumar told a press conference here, after the MLA's brother was arrested in Unnao. The woman has alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brothers, and blamed the lawmaker for her father's death. A Principal of a Kendriya Vidyalaya here was arrested today by the CBI in a case of alleged bribery for admission of an Scheduled Caste candidate under the Right to Education (RTE) quota, the agency said. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of CBI caught E Anandan "red-handed" while accepting an illegal gratification of Rs one lakh from the complainant, the agency said in a release. The ACB, on a complaint, registered a case against Anandan, Principal of Kendriya Vidhyalaya, Ashok Nagar, for "having demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs one lakh from the complainant for considering admission of his son in the 1st standard under RTE quota for SC candidate," it said. "Anandan was arrested consequent to being caught red handed while accepting the illegal gratification," it added.

A sessions court today directed the CBI to file supplementary charge sheet, in the murder case of a seven-year-old boy at a private school in Haryana by May 14 after the probe agency sought more time. Additional Sessions Judge Jasbir Singh Kundu granted time to the CBI after taking note of a fresh plea of the agency stating that investigation in the case was underway and it needed more time to file the supplementary report.
