The Delhi High Court today sought the response of the Centre, AAP government and police on a plea alleging inaction on their part in preventing bonded labour, especially of children, and in implementation of schemes meant for rehabilitation of victims of this practice. Terming as serious the grievances raised in the PIL, a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Ministry of Labour, Delhi Government, Commissioner of Police, National Human Rights Commission, Delhi State Legal Services Authority and various other authorities, asking them to reply by April 24. The court directed the police to file a report on cases of last five years in which it has lodged FIRs with regard to bonded labour, especially of child victims, and the status of each case. A 20-year-old man was stabbed today during a clash with some persons at Thakurain Ka Purwa village under Mohanganj police station limits in Amethi district, police said. Ranjit (20), a resident of Thakurain Ka Purwa, was stabbed after a clash with three accused of the same village as the victim's, Mohanganj SHO DK Singh said, adding that he was admitted to the community health center in Tiloi for treatment. The victim is out of danger, he said. Police lodged an FIR against the three accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) . The Supreme Court today granted bail to the proprietor of a firm which supplied oxygen to a government hospital in Gorakhpur where scores of children had died last year, noting that he had spent seven months in jail for an offence which entailed maximum punishment of three years imprisonment and a charge sheet had already been filed in the case. Manish Bhandari had moved the top court against the Allahabad High Court order rejecting his bail plea. Goa Police today busted a prostitution racket and rescued five women, including three Uzbekistan nationals, from a lodge and arrested two men. The racket was operated from a guest house located near famous Calangute beach, said police inspector Jivba Dalvi. The arrested men, identified as Dhananjay Kumar Mohanty and Chandan Mahapatra, hailed from Odisha. Out of the five women, two hailed from Mumbai and Hyderabad. "The women were later produced before Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Mapusaand shifted to Protective Home- Merces," said the police officer. A case was registered under the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act, he said.
The Bombay High Court today permitted a minor victim of rape to terminate her 24-week pregnancy. A division bench of Justices N H Patil and Anuja Prabhudessai also sought to know from the Maharashtra government if there any circular or guidelines were issued to the police on how to handle such cases and directed it to revert after two weeks. The bench was hearing a petition filed by father of the 13-year-old victim. Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancies Act, termination of pregnancy which has crossed the 20-week gestation period is allowed with permission of high court. The HC had last week interviewed the victim and directed the state-run JJ Hospital's medical board to examine her and submit a report today. In its report, the board opined that the termination of pregnancy was advisable as its continuation would endanger the life of the girl and also have a negative psychological impact on her. Three people were arrested today from Nanded district for robbing, and in the process killing, a woman here on March 14, police said. "The three had snatched a bag containing Rs 2.70 lakh from Sheela Gaikwad when she, along with her daughter, was returning from a branch of the State Bank of India on March 14." "They have been identified as Raju Prakasham Petla (58), Shivaji Raju Petla (22) and Yakub Pavlu Guddeti (38). A Delhi court today discharged Aam Aadmi Party MLA Naresh Balyan in a case related to the alleged seizure of about 6,000 liquor bottles from a warehouse near his home in January 2015 during the assembly election campaign. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal granted the relief to the politician, saying there was no enough evidence to put him on trial. According to the prosecution, in a joint operation, the Election Commission (EC) and the Delhi Police officials had seized 5,964 bottles (4,473 litres) of illicit liquor from a godown allegedly owned by Balyan, in Uttam Nagar's Om Vihar area on January 31, when model code of conduct was enforced for the Delhi assembly elections. The bottles had labels "for sale in Haryana" and the police had initially registered a case against unidentified people and started a probe, it said. The prosecution said that the liquor was brought to Delhi from Haryana's Bahadurgarh.

The Delhi High Court was today told that a trial court had wrongly dismissed a suit seeking deletion of some references to the 1992 demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya from former President Pranab Mukherjee's 2016 book on the grounds that they had hurt Hindu sentiments. Justice Najmi Waziri heard the arguments and sought certain clarifications from the plaintiffs' counsel who said he was concerned with Mukherjee as the author of the book and not as the President of the country. The book 'Turbulent Years 1980-1996' was released when Mukherjee was the President and the suit was also filed before the trial court court during his tenure. The court today listed the matter for further hearing on May 24. An elderly couple was strangulated to death at their residence in Sitamarhi town of Bihar, police said today. The deceased, identified as Bharat Prasad (65) and his wife Mandavi (62), were killed yesterday night at their Bhavdepur Professor colony house, Town Police Station SHO Anil Kumar Sharma said. The killing seems to be a fallout of land dispute, Sharma said. "We are waiting for forensic team from Patna to reach here. The father of an 18-year-old woman, who had alleged rape by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brothers, died in custody here today, prompting her to put the blame on the lawmaker, who rejected the charge as a conspiracy and said the complainant belonged to "low class". Police said roads were closed and cordons put in place outside the palace today while the suspicious vehicle was assessed. The restrictions were lifted later today morning.
