SIT formed to probe killing of 2 Shiv Sena men in Ahmednagar: Police

Ahmednagar police today said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the killing of two Shiv Sena leaders by motorcycle-borne assailants on Saturday, hours after a local bypoll result was announced. Sanjay Kotkar (35) and Vasant Thube (40) were shot dead on Saturday in Shahunagar area of Kedgaon, hours after the result of a bypoll in Ward 32 of the Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation was declared. The Superintendent of Police, Ahmednagar, Ranjankumar Sharma, today said, "We have formed an SIT to investigate the murders of Shiv Sena leaders Sanjay Kotkar and Vasant Thube. 12 arrested in 'moral policing' case in Assam

At least 12 people were arrested in a suspected moral policing case, in which a woman was assaulted for going out with a male friend in Goalpara district, a senior police officer said today. A 22-year-old woman, who is about to get married soon, was beaten up by local people after she was spotted with her friend at Aolguri area which comes under the jurisdiction of Krishnai police station, he said. Police have registered an FIR in the case and nabbed six people yesterday and six more today, Goalpara SP Amitava Sinha said. "This is a case of moral policing. What we have come to know is that the woman's marriage has been fixed. She was going somewhere with her male friend yesterday, when some youths attacked them. The youths mainly targeted the woman," Sinha told PTI. Illegal commercial activity in R K Puram: NGT directs SDMC to respond

The National Green Tribunal has taken note of a plea alleging illegal commercial activity in and around R K Puram area here and directed the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to inform it about action taken in this regard. A bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore asked the SDMC to file an additional affidavit of the officer concerned with regard to the issue. "The counsel appearing for SDMC is directed to file additional affidavit of the officer concerned with regard to the allegation made by the applicant that illegal commercial activity is going on in and around R K Puram area on the Nallah and no steps are being taken by the corporation. Illegal mining case: Karna MLA fails to appear before Goa SIT

Karnataka MLA Santeesh Sail, whose company is being probed by the SIT of the Goa Police in connection with an illegal mining case, today failed to appear before the investigating officer in Panaji. Sail, the Independent MLA representing Karwar constituency, sent a letter saying he could not appear before the IO (Investigation Officer) because his mother-in-law is unwell, said Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Karthik Kashyap. Sail was supposed to appear before the SIT at 11 AM today. "A fresh summons would be issued against the MLA," said the SP. NGO claims illegal closure of AIIMS graft cases:HC seeks Centre's reply

The Delhi High Court today sought the Centre's response on a plea alleging that the Union Health Ministry had illegally closed graft cases of thousands of crores and connected disciplinary proceedings against some former senior officials of the AIIMS without the approval of the competent authority -- the Prime Minister. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Centre and sought its reply by July 31 on the application by an NGO. The NGO, Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), has claimed that all corruption cases, some in relation to over Rs 6,000 crore worth of infrastructure development at the AIIMS, against the bureaucrats were being illegally closed without following the due procedure and without approval of the competent disciplinary authority -- the Prime Minister, as he is in charge of the Department of Personnel and Training. Two killed as car rams into pick-up van

Two persons were today killed and as many injured when the car they were travelling in rammed into a pick-up van in Rajasthan's Churu district, police said. The car collided head-on with the van near Bharpalsar village in Churu district, Rajaldesar police station SHO Satish Kumar said. He said that the deceased were identified as Kulshrestha (40) and Deepak Kumar (45) of Haryana. They died on their way to a hospital. The injured were undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Rajaldesar. Post mortem of the bodies was conducted and a case registered against the jeep driver, police said.

Fund embezzlement case: Temporary relief to Teesta Setalvad from SC

Activist Teesta Setalvad today got temporary relief in a case of fund embezzlement with the Supreme Court extending their interim protection from arrest and transit anticipatory bail from May 2 to May 31, granted to her and her husband by the Bombay High Court. The apex court, which granted them relief on the condition that they would have to move the competent court in Gujarat for anticipatory bail, was clear that the Bombay High Court had no jurisdiction to entertain their plea as the FIR was registered by the Gujarat police. "Since the FIR is in Gujarat, the competent court will be in Gujarat," a bench comprising Justices Kurian Joseph, M M Shantanagoudar and Navin Sinha said. The bench said Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand will not be arrested till May 31 but before that they would have to approach for the competent court in Gujarat which will decide the matter on merits. "We direct the respondents (Setalvad and Javed Anand) to seek appropriate remedy from the competent court .

Kamala Mills fire: HC seeks govt reply on a plea seeking CBI probe

The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra government and the city police to file affidavits in response to a petition of seven members of a family, who were injured in a fire at the Kamala Mills Compound, seeking compensation and CBI probe in the case. A division bench of Justices S M Kemkar and M S Karnik also asked the petitioners to amend their petition, justifying the reason behind demanding a CBI investigation into the case. Fourteen persons were killed and several others injured when a fire broke out at two pubs - 1Above and Mojo Bistro - situated at the Kamala Mills Compound in central Mumbai on December 29 last year. The petitioners - Pratik Thakur and his family members - were at the 1Above pub for dinner at the time of the incident and had suffered burn injuries. Abducted girl rescued in Rajouri, kidnapper held

A girl, allegedly abducted by a youth a week ago, was rescued and her kidnapper arrested in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The girl was rescued after a series of raids at various places in Nowshera area of the district, a police spokesman said. He said the family of the girl lodged a complaint last week alleging she was abducted by a resident of Nowshera. After registration of a kidnapping case, a special team was formed which raided various places and finally recovered the girl, police said. The accused was arrested and is being questioned, the spokesman said.

54-year-old man beaten to death for raping minor girl

A case was registered against people, who had beaten an old man, accused of raping a class 2 girl.The 54-year-old man was reportedly beaten to death by villagers in Donkeshwar, for allegedly raping the girl.According to reports, the accused was thrashed and tied to a tree where stones and sticks were hurled at him, till he collapsed in a pool of blood.A case has been registered on Sunday, under section 302 IPC against persons, who beat the man to death. BJP MLA rape case:Victim's dad dies; magisterial probe ordered

The father of an 18-year-old woman, who alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brothers, today died in custody here, prompting her to charge that he was killed inside jail at the behest of the lawmaker. Pappu Singh, around 50, was rushed to a hospital from the district jail last night and died during treatment today. District Magistrate Ravi Kumar NG said that the postmortem examination of the victim would be conducted by a panel of doctors to ascertain the exact cause of death. Canadian humanitarian worker arrested in Nepal over paedophilia charges

A 60-year-old Canadian national running an NGO in Nepal has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing children on the pretext of providing them humanitarian assistance, police said today. Peter John Dalglish, who had served as the country representative of the UN Habitat Afghanistan, was arrested in Kavre District, about 60 km North-East from Kathmandu, on Saturday by a team of Nepal Police Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) on paedophilia charges. Two children, aged 12 and 14, who were allegedly abused by Dalglish were also rescued from his room in Mandan Deupur Municipality. The CIB suspects that there could be other victims. Bhaglpur clashes:Union min's son Arijit Shashwat gets bail

A Bhagalpur court today granted conditional bail to Arijit Shashwat, son of Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, and seven others in connection with a case relating to recent communal clashes here. NGT notice to Bihar govt on plea against its order on use of fly ash

A plea challenging an office order issued by the Bihar government modifying the use of fly ash in construction-related activities near thermal plants prompted the National Green Tribunal today to seek responses from the Centre and the state government. A bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore issued notice to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Bihar government, Bihar State Pollution Control Board, National Thermal Power Corporation and others, seeking their replies.
