Ahlcon School suicide: SC refuses to hear plea seeking CBI probe
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere with the petition seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the suicide of a 15-year-old student of Delhi's Ahlcon Public School.The petition was filed by the student's father, on March 27.The top court, however, granted the petitioner liberty to approach the concerned high court with the prayer.The teenage girl, who reportedly failed in her Class 9 examinations, committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Noida, on March 20. Her father alleged that the she had earlier accused her teacher of sexually harassing her.The victim's family also said that the girl was under "too much pressure" and that her teachers intentionally failed the 15-year-old in her exams.Earlier, a case was registered under Sections 306 (Abetment of suicide) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) and an investigation was also launched into the incident.
SC to hear Cauvery issue on May 3, asks centre to file draft scheme
Supreme Court on Monday said that it will hear the Cauvery water distribution issue on May 3 and asked the centre to file a draft scheme on the same day.The top court has also asked the authorities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to maintain peace, till it finalises the scheme for implementation of its judgment.On 16 February, the Supreme Court asked the Centre to form the Cauvery Management Board to implement a formula for sharing of water between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.In the ruling, the apex court reduced Tamil Nadu's share in the Cauvery water to 177.25 thousand million cubic feet.
SC asks Centre, Delhi govt not to make sealing a 'political' issue
The Supreme Court today asked the Centre, Delhi government and other authorities concerned not to make unauthorised construction and sealing of illegal structures in the national capital "political" issues. A bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said this after Additional Solicitor General A N S Nadkarni, appearing for the Centre, informed the court that they had held meetings with all the agencies concerned and they had proposed to constitute a special task force for monitoring all the issues arising out of unauthorised constructions. "There are a few points and you please take these into account. This is not a political issue," the bench said. Unnao rape case: Magisterial inquiry ordered into death of victim's father

Centre questions maintainability of petitions in PNB scam case
The Centre on Monday questioned the maintainability of the petitions in connection with multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam case.Attorney General KK Venugopal submitted the Centre's stand and also opposed the petitioner's prayers for a court monitored probe in the scam, contending that five investigating agencies are already probing the case.The three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, fixed the matter for further hearing on April 23.The court was hearing a petition filed by a lawyer seeking SIT probe into the scam.In an earlier hearing, AG Venugopal told the apex court that people file PIL seeking court inquiry of the probe even before it is begun, and stated that simultaneous probe and its inquiry is not justified.The PNB in February detected the multi-crore scam, wherein celebrity jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle and business partner Mehul Choksi had allegedly cheated the bank to the ...

Four injured in Manipur blast
Four persons were injured in a bomb blast near a power station at Thoubal Khunou in Thoubal district of Manipur, the police said today. The IED blast, occurred at about 8.30 pm last night, near the gate of a mega power sub-station was suspected to have triggered by unknown people and could be related to monetary demands, they said. The injured were rushed to Thoubal district hospital where their conditions are said to be stable, the police said. A combing operations was launched this morning to arrest the culprits.
Man booked for extortion in Palghar
The district rural police has booked a man, claiming to be the editor of a local publication, for allegedly trying to extort Rs 20 lakh from a builder in Vasai area. The Tulinj police registered offences against the man under Indian Penal Code sections for extortion, the police said in a release. The builder alleged that the man had threatened to complain against him to the local civic body, which had taken up a drive to demolish illegal constructions, if he did not give him Rs 20 lakh, the police said. A probe was on into the case, the release added.
No arrest of Teesta Setalvad in fund embezzlement case till May 31: SC
The Supreme Court today extended the interim protection from arrest and transit anticipatory bail granted to activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband by the Bombay High Court from May 2 to May 31 in the fund embezzlement case lodged by the Gujarat police. The top court, however, asked Teesta and her husband Javed Anand to seek anticipatory bail from the competent forum in Gujarat. A bench headed by Justice Kurian Joseph said if remedy is sought by Teesta and her husband then the concerned court should decide the matter on merit. BJP MLA rape case: Father of victim dies
The father of an 18-year-old woman, who alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brothers, died while in judicial custody here today. Pappu Singh, around 50, was rushed to a hospital from the district jail last night and died during treatment today. District Magistrate Ravi Kumar NG said that the postmortem examination of the victim would be conducted by a panel of doctors to ascertain the cause of death. He said that a probe had been ordered into the matter. Pappu was arrested on April 5 under the Arms Act after he was allegedly beaten up by Anil Singh, the MLA's brother. The daughter of the deceased had yesterday tried to immolate herself near the chief minister's residence in Lucknow, alleging that she was gang-raped by the BJP MLA and his brothers. The immolation bid was, however, foiled by the police. Youth arrested in 4-yr-old girl's murder
A youth has been arrested for allegedly bludgeoning a four-year-old girl to death after she resisted his rape attempts three days ago in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, the police said today. During investigation, Ayub (22) was apparently found involved in the incident. He was arrested from Khatauli town last evening, said Omveer Singh, superintendent of police (City). The SP claimed that the accused had confessed to stoning the girl to death, after the victim started shouting when he allegedly tried to rape him. The body of the girl was found in a vacant plot in Khatauli on Friday evening. A brick with blood on it was found from the spot, a police officer had said.
SC asks Centre to file Cauvery management scheme by May 3
The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to formulate and file the draft Cauvery management scheme before it by May 3 and directed the authorities of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and other stakeholders to ensure peace in the meantime. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said it had considered the award of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) while deciding the water share of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry in its judgement. The bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said that its judgment has to be complied with all the stakeholders. The court said the authorities are required to ensure peace till it peruses the draft scheme and finalises it for proper distribution of Cauvery water. The apex court, in its verdict, had asked the Centre to formulate a scheme to ensure compliance of its 465-page judgement on the decades-old Cauvery dispute. It had modified the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) award of 2007 and made it clear that it will .
Another former South Korean leader charged with corruption
South Korean prosecutors say they've indicted former President Lee Myung-bak on bribery, embezzlement and other charges. Lees indictment Monday came three days after his successor Park Geun-hye was sentenced to 24 years in prison for a separate corruption scandal. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office said today it charged Lee with taking a total of 11 billion won (USD 10 million) in bribes from the country's spy agency, Samsung and others. Lee has also been charged with embezzling about 35 billion won (USD 33 million) of official funds from a private company he owned and evading corporate taxes totaling 3 billion won (USD 281,270). Lee was a Hyundai executive and a Seoul mayor before serving as president from 2008-2013. Lee has been at a Seoul detention center since his arrest last month.

BJP MLA held for vandalising SP's office after NCP leader's detention
The police in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district today arrested BJP MLA Shivaji Kardile for allegedly vandalising the office of the superintendent of police (SP), a senior official said. An NCP MLC, Arun Jagtap, who was also allegedly involved in the incident, was on the run and a search was on for him, Ahmednagar Superintendent of Police Ranjankumar Sharma told PTI. The incident took place on Saturday when NCP MLA from Ahmednagar city, Sangram Jagtap, was detained at the SP's office in connection with the killing of two local Shiv Sena leaders. CDR case: SC stays Bombay HC order to initiate action against cops
The Supreme Court today stayed the Bombay High Court judgment ordering departmental action against Maharashtra policemen involved in a probe against a lawyer who was accused of illegally possessing call detail records (CDRs) of actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui's wife. Dalit leader M Geethanandan and some of his supporters were arrested today for attempting to block traffic here as part of a dawn-to-dusk hartal called by various Dalit outfits to protest the "dilution" of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Kerala's Dalit Action Council convener Geethanandan and some activists were arrested and taken to various police stations in the city, police said.
