HC disposes of PIL on height norm violations near airport

The Bombay High Court today disposed of a public interest litigation seeking court's intervention on height norm violations by constructions around the Mumbai airport. A bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and P D Naik held that the Height Restrictions (For Safeguarding of Aircraft Operations) Rules, 2015 contain well-defined norms. As long as the authorities are implementing them, the court need not pass any intervening orders, the judges said. When the PIL was filed in 2014, these rules were yet to be framed, the court noted. "The Rules came into force in 2015, laying down procedure for the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Airport Authority of India to deal with buildings or objects violating height norms or affecting air safety. "However, the existence of these rules was not brought to this court's notice until recently," the bench said. Jodhpur jail cell for 'Tiger' Salman in blackbuck poaching case

A court today convicted superstar Salman Khan and sentenced him to five years in prison for killing two blackbucks, capping a 20-year case that began with a late night safari outside Jodhpur on the sidelines of a film shoot. The court in this tourist city acquitted his Bollywood colleagues Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Neelam and Sonali Bendre and a local, Dushyant Singh, giving them the "benefit of doubt" for the incident in October 1998. Blackbuck case: Animal right activists Salman conviction

Animal right groups today welcomed the sentencing of Bollywood star Salman Khan in a 1998 blackbuck killing case, asserting the verdict proved no one was above the law, while a section of activists said the actor should have been given the maximum punishment under the Wildlife Act. Khan, sentenced to five years in jail by a Jodhpur court today, was taken to the central jail in the Rajasthan city after the verdict. "The verdict shows, whether you are Salman Khan or an ordinary citizen, the facts will be heard by a court and the law will prevail," PETA India spokesperson Sachin Bangera said. Germany: Woman imprisoned for killing 2 newborn babies

A German court has convicted a woman of manslaughter for killing two of her newborn babies, whose bodies she kept in the freezer. News agency dpa reports that the state court in Halle sentenced the 46-year-old defendant today to nine-and-a-half years in prison. She had admitted secretly giving birth to a girl in 2004 and a boy in 2008 and killing them. The bodies were put in plastic bags in the freezer, where police found them earlier this year. Autopsies found that the babies had been suffocated. The woman's lawyers said she had faced pressure from her then-partner, who didn't want more children beyond the two they had. The former partner, who is accused of knowing about at least one of the frozen bodies, is also under investigation.

Police registers case against unknown rumour-mongers in J-K

Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered a case against unidentified rumour-mongers in the Handwara area of Kupwara district for spreading fake news about the death of a student during clashes with the security forces, a police spokesperson said. He said a false news was flashed on various social networking sites with an intent to cause fear among people regarding the death of a student in Handwara during law and order situation. "Police (in Handwara) has registered a case against rumour-mongers under Sections 505 of the Ranbir Penal Code and the 66 IT Act," the spokesperson said. Investigations into the matter has been taken up, he said. "Handwara police has clarified that no such incident has happened in the district," he added. The spokesperson said some incidents of stone-pelting by students were reported in parts of the Valley but police handled it with "due caution and care". "Some officers and jawans of security forces were injured in these incidents," he said.

Big haul of gold in Kochi airport

A total of 1.3 kg gold worth about Rs 41.19 lakh was seized at the international airport in seven separate incidents, a Customs official said here today. The gold was seized during April 1-5. The metal was being smuggled in shoes and luggages, the Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said. In one of the cases, 497 gm of gold worth Rs 15.34 lakh was found lying unclaimed on a bus carrying passengers from the aircraft to the terminal building, Kumar said.

Court reserves order on Kejriwal's plea in DDCA's defamation complaint

A Delhi court will pronounce on April 19 its order on an application of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking discharge in a criminal defamation complaint filed against him by Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) and its then Vice President Chetan Chauhan for allegedly defaming the cricketing body. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal heard the arguments from the complainants and the accused persons, including suspended BJP MP Kirti Azad, and reserved the order. In his application, the AAP leader's advocate Rishi Kumar claimed there was not an iota of evidence that Chauhan and any other DDCA official were "personally" defamed. "There is no aggrieved person in the complainants and the complaint needs to be be dismissed," the advocate for Kejriwal said. Doctor arrested for raping medical intern

The Delhi Police on Thursday arrested a doctor of Hindu Rao Hospital who allegedly raped a medical intern.Talking to ANI, Jatin Narwal, DCP North, said, "The medical intern complained about the doctor that he raped her on the pretext of inviting her over for dinner. We registered an FIR and following legal procedure we arrested the doctor."The incident allegedly took place on Monday when the doctor and the intern were on duty.

Jaime King's son struck by glass after man allegedly attacks car

Actor-model Jaime King's son was hit by glass after a man allegedly attacked the car the toddler was sitting in. The incident took place in Beverly Hills, California last afternoon. According to a release from the Beverly Hills Police Department, King's four-year-old son, James Knight, and her female friend were in a car that was parked along a curb when Paul Francis Floyd, 47, of Los Angeles allegedly jumped onto the vehicle. Salman Khan's lawyer said that they will appeal to the sessions court to seek relief for the actor, who was today sentenced to five years in jail in the 1998 black buck poaching case. Ambedkar's statue damaged in UP

In yet another incident, a statue of Bhimrao Ambedkar was found damaged in a village under Sirsaganj police station area here, police said today. The right hand of the statue of Ambedkar installed in Bagichi in Nagla Nandi village was found damaged this morning, SP (rural) Mahendra Singh said. The incident led to strong protests by the locals who demanded immediate replacement of the statue and arrest of the culprits, he said, adding that senior officials rushed to the spot and somehow pacified the protestors. A case has been registered and efforts are on to nab the culprits, the SP said. Earlier similar incidents were reported from Siddhartnagar and Allahabad after which Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued directives to the district magistrates and SPs to take steps for ensuring security of the statues installed in their respective districts and see that such cases are not repeated.

Hardcore criminal arrested under PSA in Jammu; sent to jail

A hardcore criminal, involved in several cases of crime, was slapped with the Public Safety Act (PSA) and sent to the Kot Bhalwal Jail in the city today. The criminal, Narinder Kumar alias Techi, from the R S Pura area was arrested by police and sent to the jail, police said. District magistrate Jammu, on the recommendation of police, slapped the PSA against the criminal, they said. Kumar was involved in five cases, including attempt to murder, smuggling of drugs and contraband substance and their sale among the youth of the area, they said. Keeping into consideration his criminal activities and involvement in drugs, police submitted dossier against him to the district magistrate and accordingly the PSA was slapped against him.

Amritsar girl separated from kin at Jammu station, restored to parents

A 12-year-old girl, who got separated from her family at the Jammu Railway Station, was traced by the railway police and restored to her parents, the railways police said today. The girl, identified as Pooja from Amritsar, got separated from her kin at Jammu in the morning yesterday and reached the Katra Railway station in the Malwa Express, they said. A team of railway police swung into action and found her parents by the evening yesterday, they said, adding she was restored to them after completing legal formalities.

DA case: ED moves Delhi HC against Chandrashekhar's bail

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday moved the Delhi High Court against the bail of Vakamulla Chandrashekhar, director of Tarini Group of Companies, in connection with disproportionate assets case involving former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh.The ED, in their petition, challenged the order of Patiala House court, contending that the orders passed by the judge are in violation of the law laid down by the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court in regards to economic offences, and that the accused Chandrashekhar was released on bail without appreciating the facts and allegations against him.Chandrashekhar was arrested on February 16 by the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for allegedly providing Rs 5.9 crore to Virbhadra Singh and his family member through his three personal bank accounts.In March, a special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also granted bail to Virbhadra Singh, his wife, and others.
