In a major crackdown on criminals in western Uttar Pradesh, three wanted law-breakers were killed while six others arrested in seven encounters in four districts, in which six policemen were also injured, officials claimed today. A man was today arrested for allegedly abducting and murdering an 11-year-old boy, whose body was recovered in bushes near Bhalswa Dairy, with police suspecting that the minor was sexually assaulted before being killed. The Class IV student yesterday had gone out with another boy from the neighbourhood. He used to stay with his family near Haiderpur Canal in northwest Delhi's Shalimar Bagh, police said. A man met them on the way and asked him to get some things to him. The boy got him those things and then the man asked the victim to accompany him, the police said. The boy went along with the man and his friend who was playing at a distance saw him going. He alerted the boy's family and other neighbours who started looking for the boy. The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh police has arrested ten persons, who it claimed were linked with Lashker-e-Taiba and allegedly involved in terror-funding activities. A parliamentary committee may recommend that the government file a review petition against the Supreme Court order diluting the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, according to panel members. Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Justice, cutting across party lines, said they will raise the issue at the panel's meeting next week. The committee will call officials of the social justice ministry to deliberate on the judgement, a member said on condition of anonymity. The social justice ministry is the nodal ministry for the implementation of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Members of the panel are of the opinion that the government should file a review plea against the judgement, another member said. Two persons were today killed and three others injured when their auto-rickshaw rammed into a civic-run BEST bus in suburban Malad, police said. "The mishap occurred when the victims, all in an inebriated state, were returning after visiting the Danapani beach," an official of the Malwani police station said. The deceased have been identified as auto-driver Zubair Qadri (48) and Satish Sode (35). "Qadri did not see the bus and rammed his vehicle into it. The injured are being treated at a hospital and their condition was stated to be stable," the officer said. A case has been registered and statement of the eye-witnesses were being recorded, he said.
The Delhi High Court has sought the Centre's reply on a plea seeking proper guidelines for the procedure of investigation to be followed by the police when it is asked to file an action taken report by a metropolitan magistrate. The Supreme Court has sought the reply of the Centre, MCI and Haryana government on a man's plea, seeking Rs 10 crore as compensation from a Gurgaon-based hospital for alleged medical negligence that led to the death of his seven-year-old daughter, who had dengue. A bench of justices R K Agrawal and A M Sapre issued a notice to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Medical Council of India (MCI), Haryana government, Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) in Gurgaon, the hospital's doctor and others on the plea filed by the father of the child, Adya, who died during treatment in November last year. In a major haul, a team of the Special Task Force (STF) today seized 40 kg heroin, concealed in apple boxes, during a check barrier near Vardhaman Chowk on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh road here. According to inspector (STF) Harbans Singh, who was leading the party, as soon as they stopped a car for checking at the barrier, they found wooden boxes containing apples inside it. "When the boxes were opened, we were taken aback to find 40 packets of heroin of 1 kg each, which were concealed under the apples," he said. The STF team impounded the car and arrested one person, identified as Gurpal Singh, a resident of Amritsar, Harbans Singh said. During preliminary investigations, the suspect told the police that he had got the consignment from Pakistan. Gurpal Singh was also stated to be of criminal background, the STF inspector said, adding that a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the law and further investigations were under progress.
Seven persons were today arrested for allegedly stealing various goods including copper plates, worth Rs 13.87 lakh, from two factories here, police said today. The arrested accused, who hail from Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh, looted valuables from the premises of the two factories on March 21, said Jalna Police's local crime branch head Rajendra Singh Gour. They looted goods like copper rods, scrape, iron. They also stole a two-wheeler, Gour said, adding a case was registered at the Chandanjhira police station. The officer said efforts are on to apprehend two others, who were also involved in the crime.
A 25-year-old man, whose was marriage fixed for today, was found dead hours before the ceremony, police said. Superintendent of Police Dev Ranjan said Aas Muhammad was missing since yesterday and his body was found hanging from a tree near Hiranwada village under Babri police station in the district today. He said the body has some injury marks and it has been sent for post-mortem. Police have registered a case against unidentified persons and an investigation is on, he said. Four persons have been arrested in Nepal for allegedly slaughtering a cow, the national animal of the Hindu majority nation. A 70-year-old man named Hum Bahadur Rana was arrested on Friday from Jyotinagar area in Kapilbastu district with 30 kilogrammes beef, police said. On interrogation, police found that Rana had hidden a large quantity of beef, which he confessed during the investigation. Three of Rana's accomplices were arrested yesterday, a day after his arrest, police said. In Nepal, slaughtering of a cow being the national animal has been prohibited by law. Bhopal police, on Sunday, arrested four youths in connection with the abduction and gang-rape of a girl in the city.The victim was abducted from Maharana Pratap Nagar in Bhopal by two of the accused and was later taken to a house where the others arrived and raped her."All four involved have been arrested. A court here has issued warrants against Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey's son Arijit Shashwat and eight others for allegedly inciting communal violence in Bhagalpur district last week. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Anjani Kumar Srivastava issued the warrants yesterday on an application filed by the Nathnagar police, seeking the arrest of the nine persons, who were named in one of the two FIRs lodged in this connection. An ITBP jawan has been arrested after three people were injured allegedly when he opened fire on them over some land dispute at Bharsi village under Kandhla police station in Shamli district, police said. Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari said the incident occurred yesterday and the ITBP jawan, Rahul, was found to be intoxicated during medical examination after his arrest. Two more people have been booked in connection with the incident, he said. According to an FIR lodged with the police, Richpal and Rohtas were having arguments over the land dispute which escalated when Rahul (Rohtas's son) and his two brothers allegedly opened fire, the CO said.
