Madras HC reserves order on Dhinakaran plea in FERA case

The Madras High Court today reserved orders on a criminal revision plea moved by Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam leader TTV Dinakaran against a lower court order refusing to issue copies of certain documents sought by him in a FERA violation case. Justice M V Muralidaran had on March 7 passed an interim order on the criminal revision plea moved by Dhinakaran challenging the order of the additional chief metropolitan magistrate (Economic Offences-II), Chennai. When the matter came up today, the judge, after hearing the arguments of Additional Solicitor General G Rajagopalan on behalf of the Enforcement Directorate and Dhinakaran's counsel B Kumar, reserved his orders and said the interim stay will continue till orders are pronounced in the case. The ASG, apart from referring to certain sections of the CrPc, submitted that the petitioner is filling vexatious petitions at every stage of proceedings only to drag the case. Criminals open fire on Crime Branch officers, escape

Members of a criminal gang, involved in extortion, today opened fire on Delhi Crime Branch personnel after they were intercepted near Ekant Marg, police said. However, the five criminals of the gang, which is active in south Delhi, managed to escape after the shoot out, they said. Police said that information was received that the gang's members were proceeding towards Kosi Kalan, Mathura, for procuring a large cache of arms. Following the tip-off a trap was laid at the Ekant Marg near Karni Singh Shooting Range and a team of Crime Branch was deployed for nabbing them, they said. The Crime Branch personnel signalled a vehcile to stop but the driver rammed the car into the barricade and tried to run over a police man. The car's occupants, five in number, opened fire. The police team fired in retaliation. However, the accused continued to drive the vehicle with a flat tyre. Police said that the car crashed into another vehicle. Case against fake website offering jobs in IAF

The Delhi Police has registered a case against unidentified persons for allegedly running a fake website to offer jobs to youths in the Indian Air Force. An IAF officer came across the fake website while browsing the Internet. The officer approached the Economic Offences Wing and a case was registered on March 19. In his complaint, the officer said, "It appears that the website has been created by some miscreants with an intention to dupe the public, especially gullible candidates aspiring to join the IAF." Police said that they have registered a case and a probe is underway.

BBA graduate arrested for attacking man

A 30-year-old BBA graduate, a suspected member of the Tillu Tajpur gang, was arrested for allegedly attempting to kill a man who befriended his ex-girlfriend, police said today. Sachin, a BBA graduate, was arrested on March 21 from near the Jheel Wala Park, Outer Ring Road, Sector-3, Rohini, they said. Police said that a sophisticated 7.65 mm pistol with three rounds was seized from him. During interrogation, he revealed that on December 10, he along with his associate Sonu had shot and injured one Manish Yadav, a resident of Gurgaon, who had befriended his ex-girlfriend, they said. After shooting Yadav he had gone underground and had been evading arrest till now. The Tillu Tajpur's gang and the Gogi Gang have killed members of each others gangs owing to rivalry and teams of Crime Branch are working to gain clues to members of the gangs.

Foreign women inmates in Tihar Jail being denied bail: PIL in HC

The Delhi High Court today took up the issue of denial of bail and proper phone call facility to foreign women inmates arrested in drug cases and lodged in the Tihar Jail after they wrote a letter to the court about their plight. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar sought response of the Delhi government and the prison authorities on two letters sent by the foreign women who have claimed that their Indian counterparts, arrested in similar crimes, are granted bail. The court made advocate Ajay Verma, who has also raised the issue, an amicus curiae to assist it. The foreign women inmates in their letter to the high court have alleged that they were not being granted bail by the trial courts on the sole ground that they being foreigners would abscond or go abroad if the relief is granted to them. The Tihar Jail authority, in its reply to jailed gangster Neeraj Bawana's application, submitted before the Patiala House Court that all basic human needs and facilities like food, water, medicines are provided to him and other prisoners.The Director General (DG) of Prisons, however, did not entertain Bawana's demand for a television set in his prison cell, in view of his past bad conduct in the jail."Neeraj Bawana is a hardcore criminal who cannot be shifted from the high-security ward and cannot be given a TV set due to his misconduct in prison," Tihar Jail authorities stated in its reply to the court.Earlier, Bawana, through his Counsel MS Khan, wrote to the Patiala House Court alleging poor condition of the inmates lodged in the high-risk ward of the country's largest prison.The court, on Wednesday, issued a notice to the jail authorities seeking a reply on the allegation, till March 22.Bawana has reportedly gone on a hunger strike inside prison demanding better conditions and a ..

Man stabbed to death in northwest Delhi

A 22-year-old man was stabbed to death today by unidentified men in northwest Delhi's Netaji Subhash Place, police said today. The victim, Mohit, had come to Subhash Place along with his friends Robin and Lalit where they had an altercation with another group of men, who stabbed him, they added. His friends were also threatened to stay away. When they raised an alarm, the accused ran away. The police said his friends stopped a car and took him to hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Police are scanning CCTV footage to identify the accused.

INX Media case: Delhi HC to pass order on Karti's bail plea tomorrow

The Delhi High Court will on Friday (March 23) pass the order on the bail plea of Karti Chidambaram in connection with the INX Media case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).In a March 16 hearing, the court had reserved order on the matter.On March 15, the Supreme Court gave interim protection to Karti from arrest in connection with the case. He now cannot be arrested until March 26 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).Karti is being investigated by the CBI and ED for his alleged role in the INX Media case.The ED had arrested Karti in Delhi on February 16, and he is judicial custody till March 24.In May 2017, the ED registered a money laundering case against Karti for allegedly facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for INX Media Ltd and Peter and Indrani Mukerjea when his father was the finance minister in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Trump lawyer in Russia probe leaves in legal shake-up

President Donald Trump's lead lawyer in the special counsel's Russia investigation has resigned amid a shake-up of the president's legal team. Attorney John Dowd confirmed his decision in an email today to The Associated Press, saying, "I love the President and wish him well." PO arrested in murder case

A proclaimed offender was today arrested in a 24 year old murder case in which eight members of two families were killed over a land dispute. SSP Ferozepur Pritam Singh said a case was registered in connection with the killing of eight members of two families including Sukhwant Singh, his wife Piar Kaur, daughters Gurjit Kaur and Gogi and Bhupinder Singh, his wife Joginder Kaur and sons Harjinder Singh and Bhupinder Singh in which Malook alongwith two others was awarded death sentence which was later converted into life sentence by Supreme Court in 2001. The SSP said that Malook was released on parole in 2009 however he did not returned back and resumed his criminal activities. Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh president Prakash Ambedkar today said the BJP-led Maharashtra government lacks the political will to arrest pro-Hindutva leader Sambhaji Bhide, accused of instigating violence at Bhima-Koregaon near Pune on January 1. Body of 28-yr-old found in northeast Delhi

The body of a 28-year-old man with a bullet wound was found today in northeast Delhi's Khajuri Khas, police said. The police said that they are investigating all angles, including that of personal enmity. The valuables of the deceased were found intact, which indicate that it might not be a case of robbery cum killing. The deceased, identified as Arun Kumar, lived in a rented accommodation in Karawal Nagar. He belonged to Baha village in Agra. He worked as a labourer here. The police were informed today by some autorickshaw drivers about a man lying in a pool of blood at Khajuri Chowk. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. He had a bullet injury in his leg and died to excessive blood loss, the police said.

Law student held for black-mailing girls in AP

A law student was today arrested near here for allegedly extorting money from several girls by using morphed nude photos, police said. Samireddi Srinivasarao of Uppada Kottapalli near here, a student of Rajiv Gandhi Law College, used to develop contacts with girl students of professional colleges through the social media and lured them with the offer of marriage, Kakinada DSP Ravi Varma told reporters. He later morphed their photos and black-mailed them by threatening to upload the pictures on internet if they failed to pay the money and jewels demanded by him. A few of his victims confessed that they had been cheated of cash and gold ornaments, the official added.

Nigerian dupes man of Rs 4 lakh, held

A 42-year-old Nigerian was arrested last night for allegedly duping a man of over Rs 4 lakh by promising him a hefty commission on selling herbal seeds, police said today. The accused, identified as Daniel Chukwuanu, made the victim believe that he would be paid a premium for buying the seed from a particular vendor in the city, an official said. The said vendor turned out to be a member of the gang, he said. "The victim bought the seed for Rs 4,12,000 and sent it to the address mentioned by the accused, but never got any money in return," the official said. Based on the complaint, police launched a probe and nabbed the accused from Mira Bhyander in neighbouring Thane district last night, the official said. Police suspect that Chukwuanu is part of a huge racket that has duped over 100 people using the same modus operandi. Police constable's brother killed by naxals in C'garh

A police constable's 35-year-old brother was allegedly killed by naxals in Narayanpur district in Chhattisgarh, police said today. The victim, identified as Ramsai Dhruv, was abducted and killed by naxals after holding a jan adalat (kangaroo court) near Jharawahi village in Abhujmad area on March 9, Narayanpur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Shukla told PTI. "However, the incident came to light yesterday when the victim's family lodged a complaint in this connection with Kurusnar police station," he added. As per the report, a group of armed naxals had abducted Dhruv from his village Jharawahi, located around 350 kms away from the capital, on March 9 this year, he said. Road rage case: Sidhu concludes arguments for his innocence

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday, concluded his arguments in connection with a 30-year-old road rage case.Sidhu, a minister in the Punjab government, had moved the Supreme court challenging Punjab and Haryana High Court's order that sentenced him and co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu to three years in jail.During the hearing at the Supreme Court, the ex-cricketer who was charged under culpable homicide not amounting to murder, in the case, submitted that he is innocent.Sidhu, who had beaten up the victim, Gurnam Singh, said that the blow was not fatal and that the latter died of heart attack.Sidhu added that it was also being proved by the medical report that Gurnam died due to sudden heart failure.The argument from the second convict, Sandhu, in the case also began for a while and would continue on Tuesday, March 27.On Wednesday, the Supreme Court began hearing the final arguments in the case.
